  • Interest in spin-torque oscillators (STOs) has been increasing due to their potential use in communication devices. In particular the magnetic tunnel junction-based STO (MTJ-STO) with high perpendicular anisotropy is gaining attention since it can generate high output power. In this paper, a circuit-level model for an in-plane magnetized MTJ-STO with partial perpendicular anisotropy is proposed. The model includes the perpendicular torque and the shift field for more accurate modeling. The bias voltage dependence of perpendicular torque is represented as quadratic. The model is written in Verilog-A, and simulated using HSPICE simulator with a current-mirror circuit and a multi-stage wideband amplifier. The simulation results show the proposed model can accurately replicate the experimental data such that the power increases and the frequency decreases as the value of the perpendicular anisotropy gets close to the value of the demagnetizing field.

  • Over the last 20 years there have been more than 3000 peer-reviewed papers relating to climate change and biodiversity published, and still the numbers are increasing. However, most studies focused on the impacts of climate change at population or community levels, and the results invariably reveal that there has been, or will be, a negative effect on the structure and pattern of biodiversity. Moreover, the climate change models and statistical analyses used to test the impacts are only newly developed, and the analyses or predictions can often be misled. In this review, I ask why an individual's life history is considered in the study how climate change affects biodiversity, and what ecological factors are impacted by climate change. Using evidence from a range of species, I demonstrate that diverse life history traits, such as early growth rate, migration/foraging behaviour and lifespan, can be shifted by climate change at individual level. Particularly I discuss that the optimal decision under unknown circumstance (climate change) would be the reduction of the ecological fitness at individual level, and hence, a shift in the balance of the ecosystem could be affected without having a critical impact on any one species. To conclude, I summarize the links between climate changes, ecological decision in life history, the revised consequence at individual level, and discuss how the finely-balanced relationship affects biodiversity and population structure.

  • The electronic property of graphene was investigated by hydrazine treatment. Hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) highly increases electron concentrations and up-shifts Fermi level of graphene based on significant shift of Dirac point to the negative gate voltage. We have observed contact resistance and channel length dependent mobility of graphene in the back-gated device after hydrazine monohydrate treatment and continuously monitored electrical characteristics under Nitrogen or air exposure. The contact resistance increases with hydrazine-treated and subsequent Nitrogen-exposed devices and reduces down in successive Air-exposed device to the similar level of pristine one. The channel conductance curve as a function of gate voltage in hole conduction regime keeps analogous value and shape even after Nitrogen/Air exposure specially whereas, in electron conduction regime change rate of conductance along with the level of conductance with gate voltage are decreased. Hydrazine could be utilized as the highly effective donor without degradation of mobility but the stability issue to be solved for future application.

  • A numerical analysis method for predicting aerodynamic noise at inter-coach space of high-speed trains, validated by wind-tunnel experiments for limited speed range, is proposed. The wind-tunnel testing measurements of the train aerodynamic sound pressure level for the new generation Korean high-speed train have suggested that the inter-coach space aerodynamic noise varies approximately to the 7.7th power of the train speed. The observed high sensitivity serves as a motivation for the present investigation on elucidating the characteristics of noise emission at inter-coach space. As train speed increases, the effect of turbulent flows and vortex shedding is amplified, with concomitant increase in the aerodynamic noise. The turbulent flow field analysis demonstrates that vortex formation indeed causes generation of aerodynamic sound. For validation, numerical simulation and wind tunnel measurements are performed under identical conditions. The results show close correlation between the numerically derived and measured values, and with some adjustment, the results are found to be in good agreement. Thus validated, the numerical analysis procedure is applied to predict the aerodynamic noise level at inter-coach space. As the train gains speed, numerical simulation predicts increase in the overall aerodynamic sound emission level accompanied by an upward shift in the main frequency components of the sound. A contour mapping of the aerodynamic sound for the region enclosing the inter-coach space is presented.

  • The flying capacitor voltage control of the flying capacitor multi-level inverter (FCMLI) is very important for safe operation. The voltage unbalancing of flying capacitors caused serious problems in safety and reliability of system. In the FCMLI, balancing problem of the flying capacitor has its applications limited. The voltage unbalance is occurred by the difference of each capacitors charging and discharging time applied to FCMLI. This paper investigates and analyzes multi-carrier PWM methods to solve capacitor voltage balancing problem. The Phase-Shift PWM (PSPWM) method that is commonly used, The Modified Carrier-Redistribution PWM (MCRPWM) method and The Saw-Tooth-Rotation PWM (STRPWM) method are discussed and compared with respect to switching state, balancing voltage of capacitors and output waveform. These three PWM methods are analyzed by using a flying capacitor three-level inverter and provided result through simulation. Finally, the harmonics about the output voltages of their methods are compared using the harmonic distortion factor (HDF).

  • Sodium, potassium, calcium, zinc and magnesium levels in the serum of 31 patients diagnosed as acute myocardial infarction were analyzed on admission (within 24 Hours) and after 48 hours. The results were compared with those of 26 age matched controls. No significant difference was observed in the mean sodium, potassium, calcium and zinc levels between the cases and controls. Compared to the controls, however, the variation in the level of magnesium is highly significant at the time of admission as well as after 48 hours. When the risk factors like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, smoking and alcohol were considered, it is found that there is no significant difference between the risk groups as well as between the patients. The alteration in magnesium level in acute myocardial infarction is independent of these risk factors. Within the first 24 hours, the significant decrease in serum magnesium (35-51% fall when compared with the control group), correlates with its entry into the cell following ischemia. From this hypomagnesemic state, it rises to 9-22 times after 48 hours. This hyper-magnesemia after 45 hours is probably due to the shift of magnesuim from the intracellular fluid compartment to the extracellular fluid compartment that follows cellular recovery. Therefore, including magnesium in the immediate management of acute myocardial infarction will be beneficial in the early recovery.

  • Cache based live migration method utilizes a cache, which is accessible to both side (remote and local), to reduce the virtual machine migration time, by transferring only irredundant data. However, address space layout randomization (ASLR) is proved to reduce the memory duplicate ratio between targeted migration memory and the migration cache. In this pager, we analyzed the behavior of ASLR to find out how it changes the physical memory contents of virtual machines. We found that among six virtual memory regions, only the modification to stack influences the page-level memory duplicate ratio. Experiments showed that: (1) the ASLR does not shift the heap region in sub-page level; (2) the stack reduces the duplicate page size among VMs which performed input replay around 40MB, when ASLR was enabled; (3) the size of memory pages, which can be reconstructed from the fresh booted up state, also reduces by about 60MB by ASLR. With those observations, when applying cache-based migration method, we can omit the stack region. While for other five regions, even a coarse page-level redundancy data detecting method can figure out most of the duplicate memory contents.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between the characteristics of nurses' work schedules, health outcomes, and work-life balance. Methods: This was a secondary data analysis that included 422 nurses in Korean hospitals. Descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to identify the associated factors. Results: Multiple linear regression analysis showed that work-life balance was lower when atypical work was performed (β=-.14, p=.010). Nurses who did not work overtime showed a higher level of work-life balance than those who worked overtime infrequently (β=-.11, p=.002) or frequently (β=-.28, p<.001). The work-life balance level increased when nurses had better subjective health status (β=.16, p<.001) or higher sleep quality (β=.29, p<.001). It was verified that the work-life balance level was higher for single-person households than for households with two (β=-.18, p=.003), three to four (β=-.16, p=.022), or five or more (β=-.21, p<.001) persons. Conclusion: This study suggests that government and hospital organizations should provide high-quality care and consideration to nurses who do atypical or overtime work as well as their subjective health status and sleep quality. Further research should focus on the development of a policy that improves the work-life balance of nurses, especially for those who work during atypical hours.

  • The shortage of nursing personnel was become one of the most serious problems in operating pediatric oncology nursing unit which was the first pediatric oncology nursing unit in Korea. The purpose of this study was to estimate the optimal number of nursing personnel by calculating nursing care hours. The subjects were 13 staff nurses and inpatients of pediatric oncology nursing unit at Seoul National University Hospital during the period of May 20, 1996, to June 2, 1996. The number of nurses' duty was 132, the number of patients treated was 1288 for these 2 weeks. The tools used for this study were pediatric patient classification indexes and direct & indirect care indexes. Each nurse measured the time that they spent for their activities by self record under the supervision of their nurse manager. The method used to calculate the number of nursing personnel was multiplication of the average number of nursing care hours per patient per day with the number of patients. Percentage, average, t-test, F-test were used for data analysis. The results of this study were as follows : 1) The distribution of patient class : Class I & II none, Class III 86.8%. Class IV 12.9% 2) Direct nursing care hours for a patient per shift according to patient classification: Class III : 27.64 minutes, Class IV : 54.64 minutes The average direct nursing service hours for a patient per shift(3 shift) was 31.54 minutes(94.62 m/day). The average indirect nursing service hours for each patient per duty(3 shift) is 21.3 minutes (63. 91 m/day). 3) The average nursing hours for a patient per duty was 52.80 minutes(2.64h/day). 4) The group of administering medications in direct care activities showed the highest percentage (38.9%). Checking vital signs among observation took the most time am.ong each direct care activity (6.88 minutes for a patient per duty). 5) Charting took the most time of each indirect care activity(52.53 minutes/ duty/nurse). 6) The average personal time per duty is 29.40 minutes, which 'was below 30 minutes of this hospital regulations. 7) The average nursing hours that a nurse provided for a duty was 8.60 hours, which meant that a nurse worked 1.10 hours overtime. 8) Standardizing to a 33 bed to a unit, 17 nurses were needed at the present nursing level.
