Purpose: To investigate the association between urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) and leukocyte differential count in children with urinary tract infections (UTIs). Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed in children undergoing uNGAL measurements between June 2018 and September 2019. Patients with suspected or diagnosed UTIs were included. The relationship between uNGAL and blood leukocyte differential count was investigated in children. Results: A total of 197 children were included in this study, 119 of whom (60%) had UTIs. The non-UTI patients (n=78) were diagnosed with pneumonia, acute gastroenteritis, viral upper respiratory infection, and others. After adjusting for age, gender, and fever duration, the leukocyte count, monocyte count, and uNGAL levels were higher in the UTI group than in the non-UTI group (P<0.05). uNGAL showed positive correlations with neutrophil counts, monocyte counts, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio in the UTI group (P<0.05). uNGAL levels were only associated with the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in the non-UTI group (P<0.05). In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, only uNGAL was associated with the presence of UTI (P<0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for uNGAL and monocyte counts to identify UTI were 0.89 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.824-0.939; P=0.025) and 0.7 (95% CI: 0.627-0.774; P=0.038), respectively. Conclusions: In children with UTIs, uNGAL levels may be associated with blood leukocyte differential counts. uNGAL measurements and monocyte counts can be helpful in children with suspected UTIs.
Lysosomal enzyme latency was demonstrated for hydrolases from porcine leukocyte by suspending sediment sfrom differential centrifugation in 0.125 to 0.250 M sucrose. Specific activities pH optima and activation energies were determined for hydrolases distributed in various sedimentation fractions and for enzymes solubilized by n-butyl alcohol extraction. Specific activities of the hydrolases revealed the heterogeneity of the Iysosomal fractions relative to enzyme content. pH optima identified the enzyme as acid hydrolases with optima for cathepsin D and aryl sulfatase also at pH 6.8. Activation energies of some hydrolases were low revealing that these enzymes could function efficiently during low temperature aging of meat.
This study was designed to observe the effect of tohiene pretreatment on leukocyte variation in whole blood and the oxygen free radical generating, scavenging enzyme activities in neutrophil of bacteria infected rats. Toluene was administered 7 times intraperitoneally at levels of 9.45 mM/kg body weight to the rats and then infected with S. aureus $2\times10^7$ cfu/ml. The toluene treated-rats showed the significantly decreased numbers of lymphocyte and monocytes, but the similiar numbers of neutrophils with the control. Furthermore the increased neutrophils in blood of bacteria infected rats were reduced by the toluene pretreatment. Concomitantly the increased activities of xanthine oxidase and superoxide dismutase in neutrophil of bacteria infected rats were also decreased by the toluene pretreatment. On the other hand, injection of benzaldehyde to rats also led to similiar results in the count of leukocytes, xanthine oxidase and superoxide dismutase activities of neutrophil with those of toluene treated rats. These data suggest that toluene and its intermediate metabolite, benzaldehyde influence on the phagocytosis and defence mechanism of neutrophil.
A 20-year-old man underwent a Tc-99m HMPAO labeled leukocyte scan for the evaluation of an infection at the stump of an AK amputation, which was conducted due to an open communicated fracture of the left lower leg. Blood-flow and blood-pool images demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm with a focus of intense activity medial to the stump, and centered within a large photopenic defect by surrounding hematoma. Delayed image obtained at 3 hours post-injection showed persistent intense and slight increased activity, Contrast angiography confirmed the presence of a pseudoaneurysm arising from a branch of the left superficial femoral artery.
The frequency of sex chromatin in neutrophil leukocyte of 14 female and 4 male normal, adult rabbits was examined and compared to those of single total X-ray irradiation. 1. The average frequency of of drumstck was 9 % in female and 0.1% in male, and that of sessile nodule was 3.35% in female and 0.9% in male , in normal condition rabbit . These results fairly determined sex ratio by sex chromatin in neutrophil leukocyte. 2. The drumstick frequency reduces to half after X-irradiaton but did not show any regular tendency or variation in morphologicla form, indicating the stability of chromatin to X-irradiation. 4. The chromatin satellite was found with a reasonable frequency in the some kinds of irradiated cells, polymorphonuclear neutrophil (above 7 lobes 0 and megakarycyte.
Recent years have seen an explosion of new knowledge defining the molecular events that are critical for development and activation of immune cells. Much of this new information has come from a careful molecular dissection of key signal transduction pathways that are initiated when immune cell receptors are engaged. In addition to the receptors themselves and critical effector molecules, these signaling pathways depend on adapters, proteins that have no intrinsic effector function but serve instead as scaffolds to nucleate multimolecular complexes. This review summarizes some of what has been learned about one such adapter protein, SH2 domain-containing leukocyte phosphoprotein of 76 kDa (SLP-76), and how it regulates and integrates signals after engagement of immunoreceptors and integrins on various immune cell lineages.
Endodontic microsurgery is a predictable treatment option when orthograde treatment or retreatment is unsuccessful or unfeasible. However, when there is a gross compromise of periapical bone, achievement of bone regeneration after the surgical procedure may be hampered. In such cases, the application of guided tissue regeneration principles, with adjunctive use of leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin to fill the bone defect as a bone substitute and as a membrane to cover the site, provides a cost-effective solution with the benefits of accelerated physiological healing and reduced post-surgical pain and discomfort. This case report presents 2 cases of endodontic microsurgery of the upper lateral incisors with loss of buccal cortical plate, where platelet-rich fibrin was successfully applied.
Background: Extracorporeal circulation using pump-oxygenator is an inevitable process to keep vital sign during cardiac arrest for open heart surgery. However, the diversion of blood through nonendothelialized channels appears to stimulate inflammatory response, and leukocyte activation may lead to cardiopulmonary edema. Our study evaluated the effect of leukocyte-induced cardiopulmonary edema using three different pump-oxygenator priming solutions; non-hemic crystalloid solution ; leukocyte-depleted homologous blood; non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood in priming solutions. Material and Method: Each different priming solution was used on five dogs, and the effect of leukocyte-induced cardiopulmonary edema during cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB) was evaluated. For each dog after 2 hours of exracorporeal circulation and another 4 hours of post-pump period, the dog was sacrificed and its heart and lung tissues were obtained for measuring Wet/Dry ratio. Arterial $O_2$partial pressure(PaO$_2$) and $CO_2$partial pressure(Pa$CO_2$) were checked. For the evaluation of ventilatory function, $CO_2$partial pressure difference between arterial blood (Pa$CO_2$) and exhaled air(Et$CO_2$) was measured. Result: 1. No significant difference was seen in arterial PaO$_2$and Pa$CO_2$among groups. 2. Ventilatory function evaluated by Pa$CO_2$and Et$CO_2$showed no significant difference between non-hemic and blood-mixed priming solution (P<0.05). 3. Cardiac and lung Wet/Dry ratios were remarkedly lower in the leukocyte-depleted group. There was no significant difference between the non-hemic and blood-mixed groups. Conclusion: Based upon this result, we concluded that the leukocyte depletion from homologous blood of CPB priming solution has a beneficial effect in reducing cardiopulmonary edema compared with non leukocyte-depleted or crystalloid priming solutions.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between peripheral blood leukocyte differential - Granulocyte rate, Lymphocyte rate and its calculated Granulocyte/Lymphocyte ratio - and the obstetric variables. Methods: From 270 cases of women who were in the postpartum care center attached to Won-Kwang Korean Medical Hospital, 36 cases met exclusion criteria. On the obstetric variables of 234 cases, peripheral blood leukocyte differential - Granulocyte rate, Lymphocyte rate and its calculated Granulocyte/Lymphocyte ratio - was analyzed. In the postpartum care center, the obstetric variables were asked of 234 cases of women, and who measured leukocyte differential. Results: Mean granulocyte rate and lymphocyte rate of peripheral blood leukocyte differential showed statistically significant difference from those in healthy people and was high. There was statistically significant difference in granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio according to mood of delivery, parity and period passed from childbirth. But whether postpartum women with anemia or not, maternal age and gender of neonate were not associated with granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio, and which was not significantly correlated with gestational age and neonatal birth weight. Conclusions: These findings suggest that activation of the sympathetic nervous system in postpartum women is higher than in healthy people. And granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio was influenced by mood of delivery, parity and period passed from childbirth. In future, more studies or surveys, with less bias, for the relation between peripheral blood leukocyte differential and the obstetric variables are required.

A salivary testing instrument has an advantage that the method is simple and can be performed in a short time. However, it is necessary to verify the factors that affect the reliability of the result, because the device is easy to use and even saliva collection is simple. The aim of this study was to compare the difference of the test results according to the measurement time in order to analyze the time factor of the external variable among the factors that may affect the measurement results of the salivary testing instrument. The relationship between the measured values of the salivary testing instrument to identify the internal variables was analyzed. Saliva was collected from 20 randomly selected patients regardless of age, sex, or diseases. The mean age was 46.6 years, 10 males and 10 females. The saliva collected was directly measured with the salivary testing instrument as group I. The saliva samples were placed in air in a paper cup for 10 minutes, and then measured as group III. Then group I was remeasured after 30 minutes and assigned as group II. Group III was remeasured after 30 minutes and called as group IV. As a result, all of the cariogenic bacteria, acidity, buffer capacity, blood, leukocyte, protein and ammonia, except buffer capacity, showed statistically significant changes in group II and IV. This means that the reliability of the test results is poor if the measurement time is not observed. Cariogenic bacteria were correlated with leukocyte and protein, buffer capacity was related to acidity, protein, and protein was related to buffer capacity and leukocyte. In conclusion, the result according to the measurement time as the external variable was different, which means that time must be strictly monitored when testing saliva. It is also necessary to take into account the relevance of the correlations between the internal variables and the clinical data.
