This paper presents phenomena of vibration and noise due to acoustic resonance in tube bank of a HRSG. Acoustic resonance is may arise when the vortex shedding frequency coincides with the acoustic natural frequency. At this tube bank, dominant frequencies of vibration in this system were 43.5, 67.5㎐. The 3$\^$rd/ acoustic natural frequency calculated was 68.5㎐. When the difference of vortex shedding frequency and acoustic natural frequency is within ${\pm}$20%, acoustic resonance could occur. In this system, in order to prevent acoustic resonance, acoustic baffle was installed in the tube bank before operating. But acoustic resonance occurred. So, we evaluate the effect of acoustic mode due to baffle extension length. After investigating, we did revise acoustic baffle to eliminate acoustic resonance effectively.

A circular plate is the main part of a circular saw blade, which is widely used in industrial cutting tools. In experiments using a circular saw containing slots, we observed that a number of natural frequencies are simultaneously emerged in specific frequency regions. The interesting phenomenon is called the frequency convergence. Effects of design parameters such as the number, the length and the width of slots, on the frequency-convergence phenomenon are analyzed by FEM simulations using ALGOR. The frequency-convergence phenomenon will be intensified when the number, length and width of slots increase.
This paper discusses the characteristics about the ignition of D.C. main discharge is a plasma jet generator, manufactured for trial as non-transferred type, when the electrical energy appropriate to the ignition is supplied to the gap between the electrodes by using advance discharge of attenuating high frequency voltage generated by a high frequency oscillator with mercury spark gap. These characteristics are under the influences of (a) the length of mercury gap in high frequency oscillator and the quantity of hydrogen flow supplied to it, (b) the condenser capacity of the high frequency oscillator circuit, (c) the length of plasma jet torch in D.C. main discharge circuit and the quantity of argon flow supplied to it, (d) the circuit constants of D.C. main discharge circuit. The results for these characteristics, obtained by this research, are considered to be helpful to the designs for the ignition of a plasma jet as well as the welding arc stabilizer by high frequency discharge and the high frequency arc welder.
In this paper, the fluctuating lift and drag forces on 5:1 rectangular cylinders with two different geometric scales in three turbulent flow-fields are investigated. The study is particularly focused on understanding the influence of the ratio of turbulence integral length scale to structure characteristic dimension (the length scale ratio). The results show that both fluctuating lift and drag forces are influenced by the length scale ratio. For the model with the larger length scale ratio, the corresponding fluctuating force coefficient is larger, while the spanwise correlation is weaker. However, the degree of influence of the length scale ratio on the two fluctuating forces are different. Compared to the fluctuating drag, the fluctuating lift is more sensitive to the variation of the length scale ratio. It is also found through spectral analysis that for the fluctuating lift, the change of length scale ratio mainly leads to the variation in the low frequency part of the loading, while the fluctuating drag generally follows the quasi-steady theory in the low frequency, and the slope of the drag spectrum at high frequencies changes with the length scale ratio. Then based on the experimental data, two empirical formulas considering the influence of length scale ratio are proposed for determining the lift and drag aerodynamic admittances of a 5:1 rectangular cylinder. Furthermore, a simple relationship is established to correlate the turbulence parameter with the fluctuating force coefficient, which could be used to predict the fluctuating force on a 5:1 rectangular cylinder under different parameter conditions.

Because a word is the basic unit of language processing, studies of the word recognition processing and the variables that contribute to word recognition processing are very important. Word frequency and word length are recognized as important factors on word recognition. This study examined the effects of those two variables on the Korean word recognition processing. In Experiment 1, two types of Hangul words, pure Hangul words and Hangul words with Hanja counterparts, were used to explore the frequency effects. A frequency effect was not observed for Hangul words with Hanja counterparts. In Experiment 2, the word length was manipulated to determine if the word length effect appears in Hangul words. Contrary to the expectation, one syllable words were processed more slowly than two syllable words. The possible explanations for these results and future research directions are discussed.
Due to the shift in paradigm from passive control to adaptive control, smart tuned mass dampers (STMDs) have received considerable attention for vibration control in tall buildings and bridges. STMDs are superior to tuned mass dampers (TMDs) in reducing the response of the primary structure. Unlike TMDs, STMDs are capable of accommodating the changes in primary structure properties, due to damage or deterioration, by tuning in real time based on a local feedback. In this paper, a novel adaptive-length pendulum (ALP) damper is developed and experimentally verified. Length of the pendulum is adjusted in real time using a shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuator. This can be achieved in two ways i) by changing the amount of current in the SMA wire actuator or ii) by changing the effective length of current carrying SMA wire. Using an instantaneous frequency tracking algorithm, the dominant frequency of the structure can be tracked from a local feedback signal, then the length of pendulum is adjusted to match the dominant frequency. Effectiveness of the proposed ALP-STMD mechanism, combined with the STFT frequency tracking control algorithm, is verified experimentally on a prototype two-storey shear frame. It has been observed through experimental studies that the ALP-STMD absorbs most of the input energy associated in the vicinity of tuned frequency of the pendulum damper. The reduction of storey displacements up to 80 % when subjected to forced excitation (harmonic and chirp-signal) and a faster decay rate during free vibration is observed in the experiments.

The spectrum of impulse response signal from an impulse hammer testing is widely used to obtain frequency response function (FRF) of the structure. However the FRFs obtained from impact hammer testing have not only leakage errors but also finite record length errors when the record length for the signal processing is not sufficiently long. The errors cannot be removed with the conventional signal analyzer which treats the signals as if they are always steady and periodic. Since the response signals generated by the impact hammer are transient and have damping, they are undoubtedly non-periodic. It is inevitable that the signals be acquired for limited recording time, which causes the finite record length error and the leakage error. In this paper, the errors in the frequency response function of multi degree of freedom system are formulated theoretically. And the method to remove these errors is also suggested. This method is based on the optimization technique. A numerical example of 3-dof model shows the validity of the proposed method.

The spectrum of impulse response signal from an impulse hammer testing is widely used to obtain frequency response function(FRF). It is inevitable that the signals be acquired for limited recording time, which causes the errors. This paper makes clear the relation between the errors of FRF and the length of recording time. A new method is suggested to reduce the errors of FRF in this paper. Several numerical examples for 1-dof model are carried out to show the property of the errors and the validity of the proposed method.
The largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) is one of the most common fisheries stocks in the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. The species is caught using a variety of fishing tools, such as a stow net or a long line, as well as jigging and trawling. Scientific investigations have been conducted throughout the world to enable evidence-based estimations for the management and protection of the main fisheries biomass. For example, inshore and offshore hydro acoustic surveys are performed annually using bottom- and mid-water trawls around the Korean Peninsula. However, to date, no acoustic survey has been conducted to estimate fish size distribution, which is necessary to construct a data bank of target strength (TS) relative to fish species, length (L), and frequency. This study describes the frequency and length dependence of TS among fishes in Korean waters for the purpose of constructing such a TS data bank. TS measurements of the largehead hairtail were carried out in a water tank (L 5 m$\times$width 6 m$\times$ height 5 m) at frequencies of 50, 75, 120, and 200 kHz, using a tethering method. The average TS patterns were measured as a function of tilt angle, ranging from $-45^{\circ}$ (head down) to $+45^{\circ}$ (head up) every $0.2^{\circ}$. The length conversion constant ($b_{20}$) was estimated under the assumption that TS is proportional to the square of the length. In addition, in situ TS measurements on live largehead hairtails were performed using a split beam echo sounder.
An accurate length measuring system has been develope by a modified Michelson interferometer. A frequency stabilized laser source and a 20 fold frequency interpolation and digitizing circuit were applied to the system. Resolutioin of .lambda./40, 16 nm, was achieved from the discrete length measuring system. In order to obtain a resoltuion of 1.mu.m a decimalizing module was designed for the 0.016.mu.m resolution system. The refractive index of the ambient air was calibrated on the decimalizing module through the Edlen's formula. Performance of the system was evaluated on the machining center in short and long length measruements.
