  • This study examined the relative importance and the most preferred level of factors which were identified through the readability researchs. For this. subjects were given a text constructed in usual letter width with square form letter or non-square form and then. ranked the preference between the text factors. In experiment 1 where a text was printed in square letters. letter size was rated as the most important factor followed by line spacing letter width, line length, letter spacing, line justification, and letter form. But when non-square letters were used in experiment 2. the second most important factor was the letter spacing although letter size still topped the list. These findings indicate the differences in letter designing principles for various types and the unfamiliarity to non-square letter forms for general public. Unlike inYi and Jin(1998) where letter width turned out to be the most sensitive factor, the highest priority should be given to letter size when publishing with usual letter width.

  • A semiotic approach to modern visual arts has emerged since French post-structuralism was introduced to Anglo -American academics by "deconstruction" or "postmodernism." It views a work of art as a sign, which is its methodical assumption ana at the same time makes its application more accessible In the milieu of modern visual arts'effort to be intimate to with general audience, modern art photography is now faced with the request to be a familar and universal domain instead of being left only in photo books as artistic and academic achievements More specifically, various photo images 1mm such visual media as newspapers TVs, and computer graphics to such megaexhibitions as "Gwangju Biennale," "Media City Seoul," and "Pusan International Art Festival," are main objects of s030y. A coherent and scientific analysis of visual semitotics is still on the way; however, it is an urgent task how to read and interpret a photo image with multiple meanings This study argues that visual semiotics can be a powerful tool to enhance the understanding of art photography. • The purpose of this study is to find out how the urban landscape of Korea, especially Seoul, changed during the last half century since 1945. The modernization of Korea, which had begun in 1960's after the chaotic period caused by Korean War, influenced the rapid growth of cities and the radical changes of its structures. But the Western-minded planning theories based on rationalism and positivism was directly applied in developing our traditional cities and consequently the modern urban landscape including urban pattern, architectural style, and commercial and residential landscape revealed disharmony, discrepancy and inconsistency in skylines, streetscape and so on. The findings are summarized as follows. 1. Because the urban structure and pattern changed in undesirable manner in terms of land use and traffic circulation, cities as a whole resulted in exclusive and heterogeneous landscape, and citizens lost their identity and felt alienated. 2. Because the architectural forms of important and monumental buildings which influenced the character of streetscape were not so successful in inventing contemporary Korean Style in true sense, we still have difficulty in creating the urban landscape of originality and legibility. 3. Because from the beginning of this era almost all highrise buildings were designed by modernism-oriented western architects, the commercial landscape of central cities did not evoke a sense of place, and after the introduction of postmodernism this tendency is ore striking even in everyday ordinary streetscape. 4. The newly formed residential landscape which was mainly composed of highly dense and highrise apartment, not only evolved very overwhelming and ugly visual impact but also exposed many social problems in living condition, neighboring and face-to-face contact. In conclusion, in ordr to define the 'Koreanness' of our urban landscape, we have to struggle to combine traditional architectural heritage and native townscape with Western shape, thought and theory, no matter how difficult it may be.

  • Many museums have recently employed digital technologies in exhibition installations to provide visitors with interactive experiences with the installations, not just audiences. However, most of them have focused on the adoption of new prototypes or technologies, not considering user experiences of those systems carefully. This study developed an evaluation tool for usability of the tangible user interfaces and conducted a usability study on museum installations emphasizing user interaction and experience. The evaluation tool is composed of 5 features of tangible user interfaces such as tangible, interaction, convenience, representation, spatial interaction and social interaction, and 24 items. The museum we investigated is the Gwacheon National Science Museum, where 8 installations, classified 4 categories, were selected for the usability study. We recruited 6 undergraduate students, who were divided into 2 teams, each team having 3 students. Three students in a team manipulated and experience each installation together and reported their evaluation score through the questionnaire and interviews. The results showed that the score of the usability for the category 3, which requires students to move their bodies for the interaction, is the highest one because it features with spatial interaction. Students expressed much interest in the category 4, which utilizes users' other senses, however, the score of the usability is the lowest because the interaction is temporary and repetitive. Most installations are well designed in terms of control constraints, legibility, lower thresholds, participation encouragement, and open to the public, but pooly designed in terms of multiple access points, configurability, accurate movement, ambient media, and full-body interaction.

  • I conducted this study, trying to improve the methods of Sung-Nam city local tax bills, which was based on my previous study where I suggested methods into developing redesign of tax bills. Local tax bills are labeled to be very intricate and puzzling experience to tax payers. To resolve this issue, several local governments have redesigned their tax bills for citizens; however, it was not effective. Therefore I apply the methods to protect their privacy on tax bills and provide checks on their pay bills. Also I design to distinguish between different taxes and change into a better layout for their legibility and better understanding on tax bills. From my previous study, I utilized suggestions into Sung-Nam local tax bills which changed flaws into improvements and easier understanding of the tax payers. I believe the improvements in Sung Nam local tax bills will pursue the public interest of the community through public service design innovations.

  • This paper attempts to focus the ways in which Seoul as an urban space can be read and interpreted from gender perspective, assuming Seoul as a cultural text which represents modernity and post-modernity. Drawing on discussions of urban sociology and human geography which have analyzed the relationship between material spaces and social subjects, this paper explores the gendered segregation and representations of space in Seoul which has been constructed through the process of modernization. The framework of spatial interpretation of Seoul, concentrating on imageablity and legibility, consists of three dimensions; gendered division of labour and sphere, dichotomy of representations along with femininity and masculinity, and the ways of interlocking between modernity and post-modernity. In this paper, 'fl$\check{a}$nerie', Benjamin's method of interpretation of urban culture and the way of seeing with 'speculum' of Irigaray are adopted as metaphoric methodologies. It is an attempt to develop a new methodology to analyze and interpret urban space from gender-cultural perspective.

  • Texts and icons are used to deliver the safety and health information on pesticide labels. This study surveyed the standards or guidelines regarding the presentation formats of texts and icons used in pesticides. Also, the text and icon formats being used in the 50 pesticide products in Korea were investigated in the aspects of size, font (texts only), color. From the guideline survey, it was found that while the guidelines for the text fonts and colors in pesticides were suggested, there was no detailed guidelines about the text size. For the icon presentation, it was regulated that the icon size for the pesticides should be larger than $7mm{\times}7mm$, and this size was equivalent to the size when the reading distance of 28 ㎝ was applied to other two guidelines. From the sample survey of the 50 pesticides, it was found that the small text size being used in the 50 pesticides was 1mm (3pt), and this size was considered to be very difficult to be read, particularly by old people. The minimum size of the texts for the toxicity of the pesticide, the very important safety information, was found to be 1.5 mm, which is considered to be very uncomfortable to be read. The size of icons were varied from 2 to 12 mm, and the total average size was 4.6 mm. The 149 icons from a total 187 icons (80%) were smaller than the icon presentation guideline ($7mm{\times}7mm$), and the reason for the small icon size might be the small area of the label of the pesticides. Thus, more detailed guidelines for the text size and more practical guidelines for the size of icons are required.

  • The objective of this study is to test the applicability of the Information processing model suggested by Kaplan to the preferences of Korean people as well as to investigate the preference patterns of Korean people and the influencing factors on Korean preferences for the landscape. Photo - questionnaire survey was conducted twice to collect the data concerning the landscape preferences. The samples of the first survey were selected from the citizens of Seoul and the students of Seoul National University. The first survey focused on the preference patterns of Korean people while the emphasis of the second survey was given to the test of information processing model and the influencing factors on the preferences of Korean people. The samples of second survey were also selected from the students of Seoul National University. The photos in the photo - questionnaire for the first survey included the scenes representing both three landscape styles(Korean, Japanese and Western styles)and three landscape qualities such as the layout of space, the use of landscape plants and the use of stones and rocks. For the second survey, four informational factors such as complexity, coherence, legibility and mystery were selected for inclusion in the photos of photo - questionnaire. Respondents for both survey were asked to respond their preferences on the five - point Likers scale. The results of the study suggested that four informational factors influence significantly the preferences of Korean students. The study indicated that both the citizens of Seoul and the students of Seoul National University prefer water and vegetation to rock among the contents of landscape. Among the landscape styles, Japanese landscape style was most preferred and Western landscape style was more preferred than Korean traditional landscape style. In addition to informational factors, it was found that the contents of landscape and landscape style were also major influencing factors on the landscape preferences. The socio - economic backgrounds of respondents such as age, foreign travel experience, income, residency before the age 14, familiarity and respondent's experties in landscape architecture seemed to Influence the landscape preferences.

  • In this study, users of the display system designed for the conference hall were evaluated as an example of a temporary space marking system for vaccination at a COVID-19 vaccination center in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.Unlike ordinary space, temporary space display systems organize space on a limited schedule, so it is necessary to properly place and communicate information about space and processes in the display design to users. Therefore, a paper description manual, a wall display panel, and a floor path tape were provided and deployed to users of the inoculation session. The results of user evaluations show that for specific users over 60 years of age, a file (information display system) that conveys the overall information about the space and process is effective for vaccination. This result is expected to serve as a reference to how and how the display system will be installed in a temporary space in the future.
