Mediating Effect of Grit between Academic achievement satisfaction of Middle School Students and Academic Engagement (중학생의 학업성취만족도와 학업열의 사이에서 그릿의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the mediating effect of grit in the relationship between academic achievement satisfaction and Academic Engagement of middle school students. To this end, a survey was conducted on 575 middle school students in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, on academic achievement satisfaction, Academic Engagement, and grit. This research was carried out by hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to understand the correlation analysis and mediating effect between major variables, and The significance of the mediating effect was verified by the Sobel test. As a result of the study, First, correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between academic achievement satisfaction, grit, and Academic Engagement. Second, regression analysis showed that both consistency of interest and perseverance of effort were partially mediated between academic achievement satisfaction and Academic Engagement. This means that academic achievement satisfaction not only directly affects middle school students' Academic Engagement, but also has an indirect effect through grit. Finally, In order to increase the academic enthusiasm of middle school students, learning counseling plans such as education and counseling plans to improve academic interest and develop various learning motivation improvement programs were discussed.

  • To improve students' classroom engagement is not only the demand of curriculum revolution, but also the reflection of learning democracy. Students' responses and thinking are the main manifestations of students' participation in classroom learning. To reduce the amount of questions and increase the opportunities and time for students to think, this study, by employing SPSS, makes attempts to analyze the data by using multivariate GLM analysis to explore the effects of students' responses and thinking on learning results. The results indicated the students learning effect will be promoted through reducing the quantity and increasing the quality of question and adding the thinking opportunities.

Motivations for Sharing Photos and Videos on YouTube and Flickr (YouTube와 Flickr에 사진과 비디오를 공유하는 이용자 동기 연구)

  • This study mainly investigates the motivations of YouTube and Flicker users for posting videos or images/photos on each service. The motivational framework with ten factors such as enjoyment, self-efficacy, learning, personal gain, altruism, empathy, social engagement, community interest, reputation and reciprocity were used to test the motivations. Those who are users of YouTube and Flickr were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk to participate in online surveys. Findings show that learning and social engagement are the two most highly rated motivations. Altruism was rated relatively low, although it was strongly correlated with all other motivations. Personal gain was rated as the lowest by both users but Flickr users rated personal gain higher than YouTube users. Findings from this study could be applicable to specify user motivations for using the services and to upgrade the designs of the services in the future.

  • This study investigated student engagement of STEM-specialized higher education institutions in comparison with students from humanities & social science and STEM majors, respectively. By doing so, the study aimed to find the effects of the characteristics of STEM disciplines and organizational culture of STEM-specialized small-sized institutions on student engagement. The students majoring STEM disciplines, regardless of the organizational types, showed lower reflective-integrative learning experiences compared to students on humanities & social science disciplines. In contrast, students of STEM-specialized institutions reported significantly higher levels of peer relationship and student-faculty interaction in comparison with humanities & social science students and STEM students of general higher education institutions. Finally, the study suggests policy implications for STEM education.

Factors Influencing Learning Satisfaction for Real-Time Online Classes in Adult Nursing (성인간호학의 실시간 온라인 수업에 대한 학습만족도 영향요인)

  • This study examined the influencing factors of learning satisfaction for real-time online adult nursing classes to provide basic data for the design and operation of online lectures in nursing subjects and help prepare a new educational paradigm. The subjects of the study were 105 3rd graders taking real-time online adult nursing classes, and data collection was conducted through structured online questionnaires from June 20 to July 30, 2020. The subjects were analyzed using a t-test, one-way ANOVA by Scheffe test, Person's correlation coefficients, and Hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the learning flow was 3.07, academic engagement was 3.46, and learning satisfaction was 3.88. Learning satisfaction showed a positive correlation with learning flow (r=.41, p<.001) and academic engagement (r=.56, p<.001). In addition, the factors influencing the learning satisfaction of the subjects of this study were academic engagement (��=.47), very high in the level of interest in adult nursing classes (��=.21), and high (��=.20) followed by 34% (F=14.53, p<.001). Therefore, the learning outcomes of nursing students and the effective achievement of their learning goals are expected by developing plans and teaching methods for active participation in classes.

A Study on the Utilization and Effect of Online Communication Channels to Promote Learner Questions in Engineering Education (공학교육에서 학습자 질문 촉진을 위한 온라인 소통 창구의 활용과 효과에 관한 연구)

  • In engineering education, stimulating students' questions and encouraging learning participation are crucial for achieving higher-order thinking abilities. This study aims to investigate the use and effect of an online communication channel in fostering engineering students' questioning abilities. Consequently, in this research, we gauged students' satisfaction with an engineering class that implemented a communication channel, and scrutinized the changes in their perceptions regarding the significance of questions, their engagement in learning, and their academic self-efficacy. In addition, we interviewed the students who participated in the class. The outcomes are as follows: Firstly, student satisfaction improved compared to the previous semester's class where the communication channel was not utilized. Secondly, learners' understanding of the importance of asking questions positively escalated, alongside their actual frequency of posing questions. Thirdly, there was an improvement in learners' active engagement in their studies and their academic self-confidence. The findings of this research suggest that communication channels should be employed to motivate learners to pose questions and involve students in effective learning.

  • It has been known that the tool characteristics embedded in physical tools and virtual tools act with different underlying mechanisms in a user's knowledge acquisition and conceptual understanding. This overview study examines the learning process through the use of physical and virtual tools from the perspective of conceptual frameworks, affordability that tools present, and the depth of cognitive engagement that occurs in the process of learning concepts through various learning activities. Based on the conceptual frameworks, the results of previous comparative studies were reinterpreted. It was found that what mattered for learning is the amount of new information that a tool provides and the different level of cognitive engagement that students use through various learning activities. Finally, the implications to be considered when teachers use physical and virtual tools to help students better understand various concepts are discussed.

Effects of SW-Efficacy on Computational Thinking and STEAM Literacy in Robot-utilized SW Convergence Education: Dual Mediation Effects of Interests and Learning Engagement (로봇 활용 SW융합교육에서 SW효능감이 컴퓨팅 사고력, 융합인재소양에 미치는 영향: 흥미와 학습참여의 이중매개효과)

  • This study investigated the effects of SW-efficacy on computational thinking STEAM literacy and the dual mediation effects of interest and student engagement in the relationship between SW-efficacy, computational thinking and STEAM literacy in robot-utilized SW convergence education. For achieving this purpose, robot-utilized SW convergence education targeting 146 middle schools students were carried out, post-survey regarding SW-efficacy, computational thinking, STEAM literacy, interest, and learning engagement were conducted. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS macro process for analysis of the dual mediation effect. Results were as follows: first, SW-efficacy had a significant effect on computational thinking and STEAM literacy. Second, interest did not mediate the relationship between SW efficacy, computational thinking and STEAM literacy, while student engagement mediated it. Third, SW efficacy had a significant effect on computational thinking and STEAM literacy dual-mediating effect of interest and student engagement. These results imply the roles of SW efficacy, interest and student engagement to improve computational thinking and STEAM literacy in robot-utilized SW education and provide implications with regard to robot-utilized SW education and instructional directions.

An Augmented Reality-Based Digital App as an Educational Tool for Foreign Language Learning and the Evaluation of Its Learning Effect: Towards an Examination of Learning Motivation, Learning Satisfaction, and Learning Engagement (증강현실(Augmented Reality) 기술 기반의 글자교구재 디지털 앱 개발 사례와 교육효과 평가: 학습동기, 학습만족도, 학습몰입도를 중심으로)

  • The present work aimed to present the development of 'Funt', the augmented reality-based digital app as an educational tool for foreign language learning. Our work further evaluated the learning efficacy of the tool by the assessment of the three dependent measures including learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning involvement. With a learning app of 'Funt', students can use AR app to access recognition-based or location-based experiences such that any objects, artifacts, or media appear to be in the app. Students are then able to interact with the digital content by manipulating it to learn more about it. Students's engagement should also increase when they create their own experience in AR to demonstrate their understanding of a particular concept or words. Learning effects were evaluated on survey data collected from a hundred respondents aging six to nine years. One-group design for pre-test and post-test was utilized to examine the differences of learning efficacy by comparing the non-'Funt' group and the Funt group scores. A pairwise t-Test was performed for pairwise comparisons between two learning groups. The results indicate that the 'Funt' group scored significantly higher than the non-'Funt' group in the measures of learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning involvement. Overall, our results suggest that 'Funt' attracted the students' attention, provided them with a fun context to learn English vocabulary, and develop positive motivation and satisfaction towards vocabulary learning through AR technology.

Modeling and Simulation on One-vs-One Air Combat with Deep Reinforcement Learning (깊은강화학습 기반 1-vs-1 공중전 모델링 및 시뮬레이션)

  • The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in the engagement has been a key research topic in the defense field during the last decade. To pursue this utilization, it is imperative to acquire a realistic simulation to train an AI engagement agent with a synthetic, but realistic field. This paper is a case study of training an AI agent to operate with a hardware realism in the air-warfare dog-fighting. Particularly, this paper models the pursuit of an opponent in the dog-fighting setting with a gun-only engagement. In this context, the AI agent requires to make a decision on the pursuit style and intensity. We developed a realistic hardware simulator and trained the agent with a reinforcement learning. Our training shows a success resulting in a lead pursuit with a decreased engagement time and a high reward.
