Application of power spectral density function for damage diagnosis of bridge piers

  • During the last two decades, much joint research regarding vibration based methods has been done, leading to developing various algorithms and techniques. These algorithms and techniques can be divided into modal methods and signal methods. Although modal methods have been widely used for health monitoring and damage detection, signal methods due to higher efficiency have received considerable attention in various fields, including aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Signal-based methods are derived directly from the recorded responses through signal processing algorithms to detect damage. According to different signal processing techniques, signal-based methods can be divided into three categories including time domain methods, frequency domain methods, and time-frequency domain methods. The frequency domain methods are well-known and interest in using them has increased in recent years. To determine dynamic behaviours, to identify systems and to detect damages of bridges, different methods and algorithms have been proposed by researchers. In this study, a new algorithm to detect seismic damage in the bridge's piers is suggested. To evaluate the algorithm, an analytical model of a bridge with simple spans is used. Based on the algorithm, before and after damage, the bridge is excited by a sine force, and the piers' responses are measured. The dynamic specifications of the bridge are extracted by Power Spectral Density function. In addition, the Least Square Method is used to detect damage in the bridge's piers. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can identify the seismic damage effectively. The algorithm is output-only method and measuring the excitation force is not needed. Moreover, the proposed approach does not need numerical models.

A Study on the Instructional Model utilizing Scratch for Introductory Programming Classes of SW-Major Students (SW전공자 프로그래밍 입문 수업의 스크래치 활용 수업 모형 연구)

  • The programming language is a core education area of software that is becoming increasingly important in the age of the fourth industrial revolution, but it requires mathematical knowledge and logical thinking skills, so that many local private university and college students with low basic skills are having difficulties learning it. This problem occasionally causes SW-major students to lose interest and confidence in their majors during the introductory course of programming languages; making them change their majors, or give up their studies. In this study, we designed an instructional model using Scratch for educating C-language which is a typical programming introductory language. To do this, we analyzed the concepts that can be trained by Scratch among the programming concepts supported by C-language, and developed the examples of Scratch for exercising the concepts. In addition, we designed an instructional model, by which the programming concepts are first learned through Scratch and then C-language is taught, and conducted an experiment on the SW-major freshman students of a local private university to verify the effectiveness of the model. In the situation where SW education is becoming common, we expect that this study will help programming language education of security IT students.

The Effect of the Storytelling Teaching on the Mathematical Attitudes of the Underachieved Students (스토리텔링 수업이 수학학습부진학생의 수학적 태도에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of storytelling teaching on the mathematical attitudes of Mathematics underachieved third-grade middle school students. 5 students with lower than 20% of math grades were selected and they were provided 36 hours of the storytelling teaching program in 18 weeks. The participant students took the mathematical attitudes questionnaires both before and after the storytelling teaching classes. As a result of the study, the mean score of the before and after questionnaires was increased, and t-test also had statistically significant results. In particular, the various details of mathematical attitudes revealed the greatest positive change in 'the application of learning technology', followed by 'interest' and 'self-study'. Therefore, we found that the storytelling teaching program has a positive effect on the mathematical attitudes of underachieved students.

  • AI is applied increasingly to overall industries such as living, medical, financial service, autonomous car, etc. thanks to rapid technology development. AI-leading countries are strengthening their competency to secure competitiveness since AI is positioned as the core technology in $4^{th}$ Industrial Revolution. Although Korea has the competitive IT infra and human resources, it lags behind traditional AI-leaders like United States, Canada, Japan and, even China which devotes all its might to develop intelligent technology-intentive industry. AI is the critical technology influencing on the national industry in the near future according to advancement of intelligent information society so that concentration of capability is required with national interest. Also, joint development with global AI-leading companies as well as development of own technology are crucial to prevent technology subordination. Additionally, regulatory reform and preparation of related law are very urgent.

Implementation of an Arduino Compatible Modular Kit for Educational Purpose (모듈 기반 교육용 아두이노 호환 키트 제작)

  • With the curriculum revision in 2015, informatics for secondary high schools was designated as mandatory. As a result, there is an increasing interest in programming in elementary and junior high schools as well as in universities. Arduino is one of the famous tools for programming education, and the usefulness of it has been proven through various case studies. However, existing Arduino-based kits have hardware-dependent drawbacks such as complicated wiring, poor scalability, etc. To overcome these problems, we proposed a kit design, which has a module-based structure, can be extended through one common interface, and can be used for learning at various levels. In this paper, we describe the implementation details of FRUTO kit and a software to use it, which satisfies the proposed design criteria. FRUTO kit has been determined in its current form through several design changes, and is under pre-test before launching.

  • Recently there is sharply increasing interest in watching and creating video contents such as YouTube. However, creating such video contents without privacy protection technique can expose other people in the background in public, which is consequently violating their privacy rights. This paper seeks to remedy these problems and proposes a technique that identifies faces and protecting portrait rights by blurring the face. The key contribution of this paper lies on our deep-learning technique with low detection error and high computation that allow to protect portrait rights in real-time videos. To reduce errors, an efficient tracking algorithm was used in this system with face detection and face recognition algorithm. This paper compares the performance of the proposed system with and without the tracking algorithm. We believe this system can be used wherever the video is used.

Development and Evaluation of Booklets and Video Clips to Prevent Children from Developing Picky Eating (유아 대상 활동북과 동영상 중심의 채소 편식 개선 교육자료 개발과 평가)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate booklets and video clips to prevent children from picky eating. Methods: Based on a survey conducted on food preferences of preschool children aged 2 to 5 years, 14 kinds of less preferred vegetables were selected. Accordingly, educational videos, activity books, and teaching-learning guides were produced for preschool children using the 'food bridge' theory, and the educational materials were named "Friendly vegetables". Educational materials were distributed to childcare institutions, and their effectiveness was investigated for preschool children who were instructed on these materials once every 30 days from March to November, 2019. The children were examined for changes in their knowledge of names, colors, taste/texture, methods of cultivation, and preferences for vegetables before and after the instructional course. Results: The awareness of vegetables increased significantly in younger children and the picky eating group. When the assessment was carried out in terms of vegetable knowledge, it was observed that the younger the age or the pickier the in eating food, the more effective the education is compared to the counter part. The preference for vegetables also increased after the instruction compared to the pre-instruction period, but significant changes were seen only in the 2~3 year age group for boys and girls. Also, only the picky group of girls showed changes in preference. The children's average interest in the education materials was 3.85 points out of 5 points. Conclusions: Through this study, we have developed educational materials for standalone use in childcare facilities and confirmed that they have a significant effect on improving awareness and preferences related to vegetables. In summary, the younger the age or the pickier the child in eating food, the more effective the education. It is believed that additional education on mealtime guidance is needed which can alter the eating behavior of preschool children and improve their diet. It is proposed to widen the scope of use of the materials by collecting diverse opinions from child care teachers.

  • Despite the recent economic contraction caused by the Corona 19 incident, interest in the residential environment is growing as more people live at home due to the increase in telecommuting, thereby increasing demand for remodeling. In addition, the government's real estate policy is also expected to have a visible impact on the sales of the interior and furniture industries as it shifts from regulatory policy to the expansion of housing supply. Accurate demand forecasting is a problem directly related to inventory management, and a good demand forecast can reduce logistics and inventory costs due to overproduction by eliminating the need to have unnecessary inventory. However, it is a difficult problem to predict accurate demand because external factors such as constantly changing economic trends, market trends, and social issues must be taken into account. In this study, LSTM model and 1D-CNN model were compared and analyzed by artificial intelligence-based time series analysis method to produce reliable results for manufacturers producing furniture components.

Data Processing of AutoML-based Classification Models for Improving Performance in Unbalanced Classes (불균형 클래스에서 AutoML 기반 분류 모델의 성능 향상을 위한 데이터 처리)

  • With the recent development of smart healthcare technology, interest in daily diseases is increasing. However, healthcare data has an imbalance between positive and negative data. This is caused by the difficulty of collecting data because there are relatively many people who are not patients compared to patients with certain diseases. Data imbalances need to be adjusted because they affect performance in ongoing learning during disease prediction and analysis. Therefore, in this paper, We replace missing values through multiple imputation in detection models to determine whether they are prevalent or not, and resolve data imbalances through over-sampling. Based on AutoML using preprocessed data, We generate several models and select top 3 models to generate ensemble models.

  • According to the OECD's interim report on Korean education analysis held in 2020, the presenter, Andreas Schleicher, director of education for the OECD, said, "Korean students show a lot of fear, anxiety and nervousness about failure", referring to how Korean students feel anxious even if their test scores are good. It is a simple example, but as mentioned in a recent education announcement, it is a common sight among Korean students, and it is easily experienced while receiving education. As Korea has a high level of interest and enthusiasm for nurturing human resources, various methods must be considered and studied, and solutions to current problems, improvements, and directions for development is encouraged to be presented. This paper considered the methods for innovation of a learning space to improve the quality of school education, and systematically analyzed and organized the effects and impacts of providing a green environment among the methods and means. It is hoped that this study can serve as a small solution and play its role in solving the social problems of complex aspects of students presented previously.
