누설 저감을 위한 75톤급 터보펌프 개량형 미케니컬 페이스실 개발 (Development of Mechanical Face Seal in 75-tonf Turbopump for Leakage Reduction)

  • In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of the leakage and endurance performances of mechanical face seals in a 75-tonf turbopump for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II first-stage engine. A mechanical face seal is used between the fuel pump and turbine to prevent mixing of the fuel and turbine gas. However, excessive leakage occurs through the carbon attached to the mechanical face seal bellows. To reduce this leakage, we redesign the mechanical face seal such that the contact area between the fuel and carbon is reduced, height of the carbon nose is reduced, and stiffness of the bellows is increased. Then, we conduct static and dynamic leakage tests and endurance tests to compare the performances of the original and modified mechanical face seals. The investigation of the leakage of the old and new mechanical face seals confirms that the leakage performance is significantly improved, by 80%, in the new design in comparison with the old design. The endurance tests demonstrate that the average wear rate of carbon in the new mechanical face seal is 0.1094 ㎛/s. The service lifetime is predicted to be 4,200 s, which is 28 times greater than the requirement. Finally, we present a new mechanical face seal in a 75-tonf turbopump, and perform a validation test in the real-propellant test facility at the NARO Space Center. Based on the test results, we can confirm that the modified mechanical face seal works well under real operating conditions.

Method applied to evaluate heat leakage of cryogenic vessel for liquid hydrogen

  • Cryogenic vessels are special equipment that requires periodic evaluation of their thermal insulation performance. At the current standard, the test is considered as the loss product or heat leakage of cryogenic vessel, which takes over 72 h to evaluate; consequently, a large amount of working medium is discharged to the environment in the process. However, hydrogen is flammable and explosive, and the discharged gas may be dangerous. If liquid hydrogen is replaced with liquid nitrogen before testing, the operation then becomes complicated, and the loss product or heat leakage cannot respond to the thermal insulation performance of cryogenic vessels for liquid hydrogen. Therefore, a novel method is proposed to evaluate the heat leakage of cryogenic vessels for liquid hydrogen in self-pressurization. In contrast to the current testing methods, the method proposed in this study does not require discharge or exchange of working medium in all test processes. The proposed method is based on one-dimensional heat transfer analysis of cryogenic vessels, which is verified by experiment. When this method is used to predict the heat leakage, the comparison with the experimental data of the standard method shows that the maximum error of heat leakage is less than 5.0%.

터널 시공이음부에서의 방수재 역할에 대한 실험연구 (An Experimental Study on Performance of neater Stops at Construction joints in Tunnel)

  • Mostly, water leakage took place in construction joints. In case of cable tunnels constructed by open-cut method, waterstops have been used to prevent the water leakage. But, we haven't any experience to install the waterstops in NATM cable tunnels. So, it is necessary to develope the waterstops and test the performance of it in laboratory. We manufactured cable tunnel lining quarter scale model by pouring concrete, and installed the waterstops. After filling the inside of concrete lining about two-third with water, we put the air pressure on the water, In addition, it is also carried out water leakage test for concrete lining model without waterstops. As a result, we confirmed the performance of waterstops and its adaptability. It is also tested that the performance of rubber gaskets used in concrete segments of Shield tunnelling. In addition, we determined the allowable infiltration rate for cable tunnel with non-drainage system.

LPLi 인젝터의 누설특성 및 내구평가에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Leakage Characteristics and Durability Evaluation of an LPLi Injector)

  • The worldwide energy problem and global warming cause the need of alternative fuels which feature low carbon-dioxide emission and another energy source. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is one of the alternative fuels widely used as domestic and transportational fuel. The third generation LPLi fuel supply system has merits in the increase of engine power and low emissions. The injectors used in LPLi system should overcome a leakage problem and satisfy the durability conditions. Therefore, 1000 hour durability test of the injectors was carried out throughout this research. First, the spray pattern and the penetration length of the selected injectors is graphically shown. Next, the leakage amount with respect to the injection cycle is introduced. Finally, the shapes of nozzle holder and nozzle tip after durability test was investigated by analyzing the microscopic image of the injector tip. The variation in the shape of nozzle tip mainly due to the residue of rubber materials is found to be the reason for leakage.

  • In this study, we conducted an impact assessment of the amount of volatile organic solvents addition on hybrid water-proofing system of urethane waterproof coating material and modified asphalt sheet. Also, we conducted a comparative assessment of whether modified asphalt sheet is dissolved or not and oil leakage by dissolution in order to perform a comparative analysis of characteristics of the impact on modified asphalt sheet according to the volatility of volatile organic solvents included in urethane waterproof coating material. The test was carried out by adding the same amount of organic solvents into each experimental group which is subject to volatility and non-volatility of organic solvents, respectively. The results of the test showed that in both experimental groups modified asphalt sheet was dissolved when adding over 10 percent of organic solvents regardless of volatility, and oil leakage observed only in the experimental group subject to volatility.

Burst capacity of pipe under corrosion defects and repaired with thermosetting liner

  • This paper aims at providing insights on the use of thermosetting liner for the repair of offshore pipelines exposed to corrosion and leakage. The work which covers both experimental and numerical approaches were aspired due to the high cost of repair for pipelines, limitations of thermoplastic material and limited study of reinforced thermosetting liner. The experiment involves a destruction test called the burst test, carried out on an API 5L X42 carbon steel pipe under four case studies, namely (i) intact pipe, (ii) pipe with corrosion defect, (iii) pipe with corrosion defect and repaired with thermosetting liner and (iv) pipe with leakage and repaired with thermosetting liner. The numerical simulation was developed to first validate the experimental results and later to optimize the design of the thermosetting liner in terms of the number of layers required to restore the original strength of the pipe. The burst test shows an improvement in 23% of the burst capacity for the pipe with corrosion defects, after being repaired with a three-layer thermosetting liner. The parametric studies conducted showed that with an addition of thermosetting layers, the burst capacity improves by an average of 1.85 MPa. In conclusions, the improvement in strength can be further increased with increasing thickness of the thermosetting liner. The thermosetting liner was also determined to fail first inside the host pipe.

제습로터의 공기누설모델 개발 및 성능 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on Development of Air Leakage Model and Performance Characteristics of a Desiccant Rotor)

  • 제습로터에서 발생하는 공기누설은 로터와 브러쉬 형태의 누설방지모 틈새의 양단 사이 차압에 의해 발생하는 압력누설이 지배적이며, 실험을 통해 압력누설특성을 파악하였다. 그 결과로, 압력누설량을 로터와 누설방지모의 틈새면적과 차압의 함수로 나타내었다. 위의 상관식을 바탕으로 제습로터의 공기누설모델을 개발하였으며, 실험을 통해 측정된 값과 위 모델을 바탕으로 계산된 값을 비교함으로써 공기누설모델을 검증하였다. 그리고 풍량에 따른 제습로터의 성능실험을 수행하였으며, 공기누설모델을 적용한 성능 분석을 통하여 실질적인 제습량과 공기누설량을 확인 하였다. 또한 동일한 제습로터가 적용된 제습냉방시스템을 고려하여 차압변화에 따른 공기누설의 영향을 공기누설모델을 이용하여 고찰하였다.

LPG연료품질에 따른 LPG액상분사방식의 내구특성연구 (Durability Properties of Liquid Phase LPG Injection System with Various Qualities of LPG Fuels)

  • The liquid phase LPG injection (LPLi) system (the third generation technology) has been considered as one of the next generation fuel supply systems for LPG vehicles, since it has a very strong potential to accomplish the higher power, higher efficiency, and lower emission characteristics than the mixer type(the second generation technology) fuel supply system. To investigate the durability property of core part of injector in liquid phase LPG injection system, leakage test, SEM test of injectors and analysis of unvaporized fuel components with various LPG fuel qualities were tested. The experimental results showed that no serious problem in durability test using favorable LPG fuel quality, while high leakage amount due to the large scratches in the needle and nozzle of the injector were found using LPG fuel with highly containing olefin components, especially butadiene species.

가압형 경수로 압력용기 재료인 저합금강의 동적 붕산 부식 실증 연구 (Dynamic Boric Acid Corrosion of Low Alloy Steel for Reactor Pressure Vessel of PWR using Mockup Test)

  • This work is concerned with an evaluation of dynamic boric acid corrosion (BAC) of low alloy steel for reactor pressure vessel of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Mockup test method was newly established to investigate dynamic BAC of the low alloy steel under various conditions simulating a primary water leakage incident. The average corrosion rate was measured from the weight loss of the low alloy steel specimen, and the maximum corrosion rate was obtained by the surface profilometry after the mockup test. The corrosion rates increased with the rise of the leakage rate of the primary water containing boric acid, and the presence of oxygen dissolved in the primary water also accelerated the corrosion. From the specimen surface analysis, it was found that typical flow-accelerated corrosion and jet-impingement occurred under two-phase fluid of water droplet and steam environment. The maximum corrosion rate was determined as 5.97 mm/year at the leakage rate of 20 cc/min of the primary water with a saturated content of oxygen within the range of experimental condition of this work.

  • 산화제 개폐밸브 개발 과정의 시험에서 금속 코니컬 씰이 장착된 밸브 중간 플랜지부에서 외부 누설이 발생하였다. 이에 기밀과 관련된 형상 변수인 볼트 수 및 플랜지 형상이 변경된 3가지 모델에 대하여 구조 해석을 수행하여, 설계 변경에 따른 무게 증가를 줄이고 동시에 플랜지간 벌어짐 양이 가장 적은 모델을 개선 모델로 선정하였다. 선정된 모델의 플랜지 부를 모사하는 시험 치구를 제작하여 기밀시험을 재수행하여 누설이 발생하지 않는 것은 확인하였으며, 결과적으로 플랜지 부의 기밀을 확보할 수 있는 설계 해석 방법을 검증하였다.
