  • A contractible heat pipe is designed and tested to improve cooling performance of conduction cooled superconducting magnet. When the heat pipe temperature drops below the triple point temperature, heat pipe working fluid freezes to create low pressure. From this moment the heat pipe does net work any more (OFF state) and it just works as a heat leak path when the temperature of the first stage is higher than that of the second stage. Considering small cooling capacity of the second stage around 4.2 K, the conduction loss is not negligible. Therefore, the contractible heat pipe, made of a metal bellows and copper tubes, was considered to eliminate the conduction loss. Nitrogen and argon are as working fluid of heat pipe. The copper block is cooled down with these heat pipe and the cooling performance for each heat pipe is compared. At off state, the bellows is contracted due to the low pressure of heat pipe and the evaporator section of the heat pipe is detached about 3 mm from the second stage cold head of the cryocooler. In this way, we tan eliminate the conduction loss through the heat pipe wall.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the failure examples on tribological characteristics of an automotive steering system. In this failure study, the grease leakage may stick leaked grease, dust, and wear particles between pinion and rack gears in mechanical steering system. In the case of seal failures such as a rod seal, o-ring and oil seals, the gear box and oil pump do not operate properly due to lack of oils. This means that oil pump does not supply a working fluid and produce a normal oil pressure of the steering system. This leads to leak a working fluid from the seals and produce a wear between pinion and rack gears. Especially, the leaked oil is usually mixed with internal wear particles and foreign dust/fine sands. Thus no leakage of working oils is very important design concepts, which is strongly related to the sealing components and smoothly operating of the mechanical friction parts of power steering system.

  • Chemical accidents generated during maintenance, repair, and normal operation, such as dispersion, fire, and explosions, can cause massive losses like a 2012 hydro fluorine leak in Gumi, South Korea. Since this accident, many researches have studied physical mitigation systems. However, due to many difficulties including potential costs and lack time, it is really hard for many companies to install mitigation systems without prior knowledge. Thus, the efficacy of mitigation system should be evaluated. This study assesses a dike design considering the fluid velocity at an open hole when a leakage accident occurs. It is assumed that leakage materials follow a free fall motion. Throughout case studies, a current KOSHA guide for a dike design was evaluated and new guidelines handling various conditions were proposed.

  • The present study deals with the experimental facility for PSD (POGO Suppression Device) performance test systems. Basically there are two methods to pulsate the system; whole-feeding-system pulsation and working-fluid pulsation. The latter method adopts either a piston-type pulsator or a restrict-type pulsator. The working-fluid pulsation using a restrict-type pulsator was considered to be the most appropriate experimental system to study the effects of the primary parameters, and a practical design of the system was proposed. Also, the experimental facility adopts the ball valve type pulsator considering the leak problem of the plate type pulsator.

  • Magnetic seal uses a magnetic fluid to seal a gap between a rotating shaft and housing. It is distinguished from other kinds of seals from the fact that solid contact does not occur in the seal. This implies that it is free from solid rubbing thus dustless and provides a clean circumstance. That is the reason why the magnetic seal is used exclusively for most of vacuum chambers in semiconductor process where dustless clean circumstance is critical. A magnetic seal has been developed of which design parameters are determined based on published data, and an air pressure test has been done to examine its sealing capability. Effects of some design parameters have been studied through FEM analysis. The results show some notable aspects of design parameters and provide suggestions for developing the seals. Regarding the sealing capacity of the magnetic seal the factor to match the theoretical value with the actual one was found to be 0.4~0.7, which means still there is some discrepancy between theory and actual.

  • Turbo chiller is widely used for the air conditioner and uses hydrochlorofluorocarbon 123 (HCFC-123) as a refrigerant. HCFC-123 is one of the chemicals being considered as a replacement for the chlorofluorocarbons. High concentrations of HCFC-123 cause a deficiency of oxygen with the risk of unconsciousness or death, the vapour is heavier than air and may accumulate in low ceiling spaces causing deficiency of oxygen. In this study, the concentration distribution of oxygen indoor was investigated by using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) as four workers were killed in HCFC-123 gas leaks at machine room of hypermarket in 2011.

  • Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH), which generally presents as orthostatic headache, is increasingly being identified due to improved imaging technologies and heightened awareness. Many prior studies have reported the characteristic brain MRI findings of SIH. However, recently, focus has shifted to spinal MRI, as SIH is believed to be caused by leakage of cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal dural sac. Advanced techniques such as ultrafast CT myelography and digital subtraction myelography have emerged as useful technique to identify the site of cerebrospinal fluid leakage. In this review, we discuss the diagnosis, spinal MRI findings, imaging techniques, and treatment of SIH.

  • The majority of cases of pneumocephalus are secondary to trauma or medical intervention. Spontaneous, non-traumatic pneumocephalus is an uncommon condition. Most cases of spontaneous pneumocephalus require surgery. However, if there is no evidence of infection or cerebrospinal fluid leak, bed rest and follow-up imaging is an alternative treatment. Herein, we report a 31-year-old man with spontaneous pneumocephalus associated with pneumosinus dilatans.

  • Perforated esophagus is a surgical emergency; it is the most serious and frequently the most rapidly lethal perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Contamination of the mediastinum and often a pleural cavity with corrosive fluids, food material and bacteria leads to cardiorespiratory embarrassment, shock, major fluid losses and fulminating infection. Despite the improved diagnostic and treatment modalities, a perforation or leak from the esophagus remains a major source of morbidity and mortality. When esophageal perforation occurs, a successful outcome can be expected only when it is diagnosed soon after the event and repaired early. Esophageal perforations have a poor prognosis after delayed surgical treatment. With the use of the Thai onlay gastric patch method, a case of postemetic spontaneous perforation of the esophagus was successfully managed 6days after the event.
