To clarify the morphological characteristics of Korean ginseng cultivated, the shapes and frequencies of Inflorescence, flowering bud, fruit, and leaf were investigated. The shapes of inflorescence, flowering bud and fruit, and leaf were divided into 6, 3, and 7 groups, respectively. The frequencies of these shapes were not significantly different according to the planting positions.
We compared two nondestructive methods for leaf area estimation using leaves of 16 common plant species classified into six types depending on leaf shape. Relatively good linear relationships between actual leaf area (LA) and leaf length (L), width (W), or the product of length and width (LW) were found for ordinary leaves with lanceolate, oblanceolate, linear and sagitttate shapes with entire margins, serrate margins, mixed margins with a entire form and shallow lobes, and ordinary incised margins. LA was better correlated with LW than L or W, with $R^2$ > 0.91. However, for deeply incised lobes, LA estimation using LW showed low correlation coefficient values, indicating low accuracy. On the other hand, a method using photographic paper showed a good correlation between estimates of area based on the mass of a cut-out leaf image on a photographic sheet (PW) and actual leaf area for all types of leaf shape. Thus, the PW method for LA estimation can be applied to all shapes of leaf with high accuracy. The PW method takes a little more time and has a higher cost than leaf estimation methods using LW based on leaf dimensions. These results indicate that researchers should choose their nondestructive LA estimation method according to their research goals.
Morphological characteristics of leaves, trichomes and acorns were investigated in 6-year-old artificial hybrids of Q. aliena ${\times}$ Q. mongolica var. crispula and Q. serrata ${\times}$ Q. mongolica var. crispula. Leaf shapes of Q. aliena ${\times}$ Q. mongolica var. crispula $F_{1}$ were obovate and resembled to that of Q. aliena. But several characters including the size of leaf and petiole and the shape of leaf base resembled to those of Q. mongolica var. crispula. In F1 hybrids, small stellate hairs distributed sparsely on the abaxial surface and their lay length was intermediate between both parents. There were no big differences on characters of nuts and cupules between both parents and $F_{1}$ hybrids. Leaf shapes of Q. serrata ${\times}$ Q. mongolica var. crispula $F_{1}$ were obovate-elliptic, and the leaf shape and leaf base and the length of petiole resembled to those of Q. mongolica var. crispula, but leaf size and serration resembled to those of Q. serrata. The number of serration in a leaf was intermediate between both parents. Small stellate hairs distributed sparsely and large single hairs were mixed on the reverse side of leaves. there were no big differences on the number and size of stellate hairs between $F_{1}$ hybrid and Q. serrata. It is able to distinguish $F_{1}$ hybrids from both parents by the size leaf size and shapes, leaf base and serration, petiole length and trichome type in the leaf.
This study was done to obtain their morphological traits to analyse genetic diversity and intraspecific relationship of 47 Polygonatum species collected from Gyeongnam province. Plant height was the highest in P. thunbergii but the shortest in P. involucratum. Growth habit and its colors were classified to 3 groups, respectively. Leaf shapes were sorted to 5 groups including lanceolate with petiole or none, petiole colors were done to 3 groups including a species having dark green leaves of purple colored margin. Flower shapes were divided as 3 groups of urceolate, tubular and gourd shapes, and its colors were white, greenish white and light green, especially light green in a species with gourd shape. Filament shapes were two types of flatness and cylinder. Peduncle color and bract attached below it showed 4 types, respectively. Fruit shapes were sorted to 3 groups. In 100-fruit weights P. ordoratum var. pluriflorum showed the greatest but P. involucratum did the least. Two species were completely resistant to leaf brightness although 7 species showed less than 7 % infection rates. Rhizome yields ranged from 4.4 g to 94.8 g per plant, showing their significant variation. In correlation analysis between 9 major characters, rhizome yield per plant was positively correlated with plant height, stalk diameter, leaf number, leaf length and width, and rhizome diameter but leaf brightness was negatively done with plant height, stalk diameter, leaf number and length, 100-seed weight, rhizome yield per plan and rhizome diameter.
A new species, Viola breviflora Jungsim Lee & M. Kim is named and described from Mt. Seogbyeongsan, Gangwondo Province, Korea. The Viola breviflora shares several characteristics (acaulescent leaves, white flowers, pubescent leaf blades and petioles, etc.) with its related species V. keiskei Miq., but is distinct from V. keiskei which has cordate leaf shapes, deep-cordate leaf bases, long pedicels, few flowers, shapeless rhizomes, green fruits, and low altitude habitats by having ovate leaf shapes, shallow-cordate leaf bases, short pedicels, many flowers, Lshape rhizomes, purplish green fruits, and high altitude habitats.
This study proposes a leaf modeling method that uses feature-based warping for efficient generation of various digital leaves. The proposed method uses warping method, one of image processing application techniques that can control various shapes of leaves in an easy, intuitive way, and generate natural patterns of veins efficiently. First, information on approximated contour is detected from a leaf blade image to identify the shape of a blade. Based on this, control line is automatically calculated to be used for feature-based warping. Then, control line-based warping is conducted to modify forms of leaf blade images in an intuitive way, automatically generating leaves of various shapes. And natural vein patterns are generated by applying a contour-based venation growth algorithm from contour information of the modified leaf blade images. This study performs experiments to verify whether various shape of leaves that comprise plants can be efficiently generated using a sample binary image of a blade. Also, we demonstrate that express the natural growth of leaves by applying warping to the growth of the leaf blade.
Morphological characters on the leaf nectar gland of Korean Prunus 4 species and 1 form were observed by SM. The results were summarized as follows ; The shapes of nectar gland on the plane figure were two, the circular and the irregular ovate. The species of circular shape were P. maackii, P. maximowiczii, P. sargentii and P. yedoensis. The irregular ovate shape was only one species, P. pendula for. ascendens. The shapes of nectar gland on the side figure were the reentrant apices and the rounded. The reentrant apices were two shapes. First, the species of the center reentrant was three, P. maackii, P. sargentii and P. yedoensis. Second, the species of the irregular reentrant was P. pendula for. ascendens. The rounded apex was only one species, P. maximowiczii. Especially on the P. pendula for. ascendens, the upheaval situation on surface of leaf blade was due to the sinking of reverse part of leaf blade at the nectar gland. The point of this abnormal shape was well distinguished from the other species. On the frequency by the part of leaf with nectar gland, the species to be observed only at the leaf base was P. pendula for. ascendens, the other species was observed two part of leaf base and petioles. In this study, some Prunus species were well keyed out on the basis of the morphological characters of leaf nectar gland.
Leaf architectural studies have been made in 15 genera and 25 species belonging to 6 tribes of the Asteraceae. Major venation pattern conforms to pinnate craspedodromous (simple and semi), pinnate camptodromous with festooned brochidodromous secondaries, acrodromous and actinodromous. Qualitative leaf features and numerical data regarding the venation pattern are charted. Areoles of different sizes and shapes are observed. Tracheids occur either solitary or in groups. Grouped tracheids are either uniseriate, biseriate or multiseriate. Isolated free vein endings are observed in Centratherum phyllolaenum. Bundle sheath is prominent in Xanthium strumarium. Secretory cavities are observed in the lamina of Tricholepis amplexicaulis.

This study attempts to simulate the structure of a woody leaf netted venation system by using topology optimization techniques. Based on finite element method (FEM) analysis of an incompressible fluid, a topology optimal design is applied to those woody leaf netted venation models. To solve the transverse shear locking problem of a thin plate caused by the Mindlin-Reissner plate model where a leaf netted venation is assumed to be a thin plate, a P1-nonconforming element and selective reduced integration are employed. Topology optimal design is applied to multiple physical domains. Combined with the Darcy-Stokes flow problems and extended to the optimal design of fluid channels, the multiple physical models of the flow system are analyzed and venation patterns of leafs are simulated. The calculated optimal shapes are compared with the natural shapes of woody leaf venation patterns. This interdisciplinary approach may improve our understanding of the leaf venation system.
The morphology of the leaves and the flowers of angiosperms exhibit remarkable diversity. One of the factors showing the greatest variability of leaf organs is the leaf index, namely, the ratio of leaf length to leaf width. In some cases, different varieties of a single species or closely related species can be distinguished by differences in leaf index. To some extent, the leaf index reflects the morphological adaptation of leaves to a particular environment. In addition, the growth of leaf organs is dependent on the extent of the expansion of leaf cells and on cell proliferation in the cellular level. The rates of the division and enlargement of leaf cells at each stage contribute to the final shape of the leaf, and play important roles throughout leaf development. Thus, the control of leaf shape is related to the control of the shape of cells and the size of cells within the leaf. The shape of flower also reflects the shape of leaf, since floral organs are thought to be a derivative of leaf organs. No good tools have been available for studies of the mechanisms that underlie such biodiversity. However, we have recently obtained some information about molecular mechanisms of leaf morphogenesis as a result of studies of leaves of the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. For example, the ANGUSTIFOLIA (AN) gene, a homolog of animal CtBP genes, controls leaf width. AN appears to regulate the polar elongation of leaf cells via control of the arrangement of cortical microtubules. By contrast, the ROTUNDIFOLIA3 (ROT3) gene controls leaf length via the biosynthesis of steroid(s). We provide here an overview of the biodiversity exhibited by the leaf index of angiosperms. Taken together, we can discuss on the possibility of the control of the shapes and size of plant organs by transgenic approaches with the results from basic researches. For example, transgenic plants that overexpressed a wildtype ROT3 gene had longer leaves than parent plants, without any changes in leaf width. Thus, The genes for leaf growth and development, such as ROT3 gene, should be useful tools for the biodesign of plant organs.
