A field experiment was conducted to assess the growth characteristics, seed and oil yield of two cultivars of soybean (G max (L.) Merr.) cv. PK-416 ($V_1$) and cv. PK-1024 ($V_2$) in relation to sulphur and nitrogen nutrition. Six combinations ($T_1-T_6$) of two levels of sulphur (0 and 40 kg $ha^{-1}$) and two levels of nitrogen (23.5 and 43.5 kg $ha^{-1}$) were applied to the two soybean cultivars as nutrients. Results indicated significant effect of sulphur and nitrogen, when applied together, on the growth characteristics, yield components, and seed and oil yield. Maximum response was observed with treatment $T_6$ (having 40 kg S and 43.5 kg N $ha^{-1}$). Seed and Oil yields were increased 90 and $102\%$ in $V_1$> and 104 and $123\%$ in $V_2$, respectively as compared to the control i.e. $T_1$ (having 0 kg S and 23.5 kg N $ha^{-1}$). Positive responses of S and N interaction on leaf area index, leaf area duration, crop growth rate and biomass production were also observed. The results obtained in these experiments clearly suggest that balanced and judicious application of nitrogen and sulphur can improve both seed and oil yield of soybean cultivars by enhancing their growth.
Grain yield of rice plants grown in outmost first and second rows in paddy field blocked by 50 cm wide levee was averaged 30 percent more than that in center rows, but yield increased percents in border rows were significantly different between varieties. Average border effect through 3 varieties were recognized only in first and second rows from levee, but most vigorous variety, Hangangchal, showed border effect up to fourth rows from levee. Rice plants grown in border rows had more number of panicles per hill and more number of spikelets per panicle. Total dry matter weight and average leaf area of rice plants in border rows differed with those in center rows from 30 to 60 days after transplanting. Early maturing variety showed the difference between border and center rows quickly concerning to total dry matter weight and leaf area. Rice plants grown in border rows showed higher values of CGR, RGR, NAR, and LAR through the growth duration except 1 or 2 growing periods.
In order to measure an antifreezing tolerance, antifreeze proteins accumulated upon cold acclimation in apoplast were analyzed. As Dongborilho were cold-acclimated for 3 to 74 days there was an abrupt increase in apoplastic proteins up to 30 days and then decrease to the similar levels. Among the known antifreeze proteins, CLP produced in E. coli. and TLP purified from apoplast were used to generate antisera that allow to measure and localize the proteins in leaves of barley. The CLP of 27.7 kDa and TLPs of 6, 26, 27, 30, and 31 kDa were increased in their amounts in apoplast as cold treatment being longer. There was a correlation among the amounts of those proteins accumulated in apoplast and freezing tolerance as shown in field and ion leakage tests for five cultivars. The deposit of CLP was localized in the marginal area and the area adjacent to leaf vescular bundle cells in an increasing manner according to duration of cold acclimation but no variation was observed in terms of it's distribution. Based on the close correlation between levels of antifreeze proteins and degrees of freezing tolerance, the immunological methods was to develop to estimate a freezing tolerance in barley.
Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) is a perennial herb widely distributed in the mountainous area of Paraguay. It belongs to the family Compositae and contains 6 to 12 percent stevioside in the leaves. Stevioside is a glucoside having similar sweetening character to surgar and the degree of sweetness is approximately 300 times of sugar. Since Korea does not produce any sugar crops, and the synthetic sweetenings are potentially hazardous for health, it is rather urgent to develop an economical new sweetener. Consequently, the current experiments are conducted to establish cultural practices of stevia, a new sweetening herbs, introduced into Korea in 1973 and the results are summarized as followings: 1. Days from transplanting of cuttings to the flower bud formation of 6 stevia lines were similar among daylengths of 8, 10 and 12 hours, but it was much greater at daylengths of 14 or 24 hour and varietal differences were noticable. All lines were photosensitive, but a line, 77013, was the most sensitive and 77067 and Suweon 2 were less sensitive to daylength. 2. Critical daylength of all lines seemed to be approximately 12 hours. Growth of plants was severely retarded at daylengths less than 12 hours. 3. Cutting were responded to short daylength before rooting. Number of days from transplanting to flower bud formation of 40-day old cuttings in the nursery bed was 20 days and it was delayed as duration of nursery were shorter. 4. Number of days from emergence to flower bud formation was shortest at short day treatment from 20 days after emergence. It was became longer as initiation of short day treatment was earlier or later than 20 days. 5. Plant height, number of branches, and top dry weight of stevia were reduced as cutting date was delayed from March 20 to May 20. The highest yield of dry leaf was obtained at nursery duration of 40-50 days in march 20 cutting, 30-40 days in April 20 cutting, and 30 days in May 20 cutting. 6. An asymptotic relationship was observed between plant population and leaf dry weight. Yield of dry leaf increased rapidly as plant population increased from 5,000 to 10,000 plants/10a with a reduced increasing rate from 10,000 to 20,000 plants/l0a, and levelled off at the plant population higher than 20,000 plants/l0a. 7. Stevia was adaptable in Suweon, Chengju, Mokpo and Jeju and drought was one of the main factors reducing yield of dry leaf. Yield of dry leaf was reduced significantly (approximately 30%) at June 20 transplanting compared to optimum transplanting. 8. Yield of dry leaf was higher in a vinyl house compared to unprotected control at long daylength or natural daylength except at short day treatment at March 20. Higher temperature ill a vinyl house does not have benefital effects at April 20 transplanting. 9. The highest content of stevioside was noted at the upper leaves of the plant but the lowest was measured at the plant parts of 20cm above ground. Leaf dry weight and stevioside yield was mainly contributed by the plant parts of 60 to 120cm above ground but the varietal differences were also significant. 10. Delayed harvest by the time of flower bud formation increased leaf dry weight remarkably. However, there were insignificant changes of yield as harvests were made at any time after flower bud formation. Content of stevioside was highest at the time of flower bud formation and earlier or later harvest than this time was low in its content. The optimum harvesting time determined by leaf dry weight and stevioside content was the periods from flower bud formation to right before flowering that would be the period from September 10 to September 15 in Suweon area. 11. Stevioside and rebaudioside content in the leaves of Stevia varieties were ranged from 5.4% to 14.3% and 1.5% to 8.3% respectively. However, no definit relationships between stevioside and rebaudioside were observed in these particular experiments.
Copper pollution around the world has caused serious public health problems recently. The heavy metal adsorption on traditional membranes from wastewater is limited by material properties. Different adsorptive materials are embedded in the membrane matrix and act as the adsorbent for the heavy metal. The carbonized leaf powder has been proven as an effective adsorbent material in removing aqueous Cu(II) because of its relative high specific surface area and inherent beneficial groups such as amine, carboxyl and phosphate after carbonization process. Factors affecting the adsorption of Cu(II) include: adsorbent dosage, initial Cu(II) concentration, solution pH, temperature and duration. The kinetics data fit well with the pseudo-first order kinetics and the pseudo-second order kinetics model. The thermodynamic behavior reveals the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption. The adsorption isotherm curve fits Sips model well, and the adsorption capacity was determined at 61.77 mg/g. Based on D-R model, the adsorption was predominated by the form of physical adsorption under lower temperatures, while the increased temperature motivated the form of chemical adsorption such as ion-exchange reaction. According to the analysis towards the mechanism, the chemical adsorption process occurs mainly among amine, carbonate, phosphate and copper ions or other surface adsorption. This hypothesis is confirmed by FT-IR test and XRD spectra as well as the predicted parameters calculated based on D-R model.
This study was aimed at expanding the tea plant culture in Korea to further north, and the leaf-form and the cold resistance of the tea plants selected form 7 districts(around Korea) were investigated. 1. The length of tea leaf is 5.1cm to 8.4cm, the width of the leaf is 2.3cm to 3.6cm, but the area of tea leaf in Mt. Mudung is $26.88cm^2$ and that is the widest of all. 2. The tooth number of the tea leaf in 43 to 73 but the number of Mt. Borim is remarkably number of all. The tooth number is increased or decreased in proportion to the leaf width and to the leaf length. 3. The lateral vein number is generally 13 to 19. The vein number of Mt. Borim is especially number of all. That is also increased or decreased in proportion to the leaf width and to the leaf length. 4. In general, the number of leaf formation index is 2 to 3, and ablong. 5. In general, those which come upper lands are remarkably small in length and width of the tea leaf and those which come from level lands are large. 6. All kinds of tea plant which is growing in Korea, area, are the same as those imported from China : Thea sinensis Linne var. Bohea. 7. I supposed that the external form of tea plant has a little changed by geography or climate for many a long day, since the tea plant had been transplanted in Mt. Samsin. 8. In the treatment of low temperature and duration of vernalization of their plants, those selected from Mt. Mudung and Mt. Hwaun were the coldest resistance, those from Mt. Samsin and Mt. Borim were medium and those from Mt. Joge and Nursery were cold sensitive. 9. The critical temperature of the tea plant from Mt. Mudung, Mt, Hwaum, Mt, Samsin and Mt. Borim was about $-10^{\circ}C$, and that from Mt. Joga and Nursery was about $-5^{\circ}C$. The critical temperature of frost injury of all tea plants in this experiments was $-15^{\circ}C$. 10. In spite of increasing the vernalization time, the critical temperature was not effected, but the treatments over critical temperature were increased their frost injuries. Based on these results, the coldest resistance, Mt. Mudung tea plant, was considered expanding their culture to further north improvement yields of the tea plants in Korea.
Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence imaging was used to investigate the effectiveness of in vivo incorporation methods for two chemicals, 3-(3',4'-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) and methyl viologen (MV) in rice, a monocot, and cucumber, a dicot, leaves. four different methods (vacuum infiltration, floating, transpiration-aided incorporation through petiole and spraying) were compared, and $F_i$ and $F_v$/$F_m$ were chosen for the imaging of the DCMU- and MV-treated leaves, respectively. The effects of the chemicals in plants were generally heterogeneous over the whole leaf area. Moreover, the effectiveness of the treatment of a chemical in plant leaves was dependent on chemical species, plant species, concentration of the chemical, the treatment method, the duration of the treatment, the existence of light and detergent, etc. In conclusion, we suggest that to achieve the proposed effects of chemicals in plants for an actual experiment, these factors must be considered before the chemical treatment, and the best method for the treatment of the chemicals tested was floating and vacuum infiltration in the dicot and the monocot leaves, respectively, as drawn from Chl fluorescence imaging analysis.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of light quality on evapotranspiration and graft-taking characteristics of watermelon grafted seedlings using blue, red and far-red light-emitting diodes (LED). At initial stage of graft-taking, blue light increased the evapotranspiration rate (EVTR) of grafted seedlings as compared to effects of red and far-red on EVTR of grafted seedlings. Grafted seedlings graft-taken under red and blue LED showed the high graft-taking of 100% and 96%, respectively. However, grafted seedlings graft-taken under far-red LED showed the graft-taking of 80% and survival of 60% with low seedlings quality after hardening. The stem of grafted seedlings graft-taken under red light was elongated but blue light suppressed the stem elongation. The leaf area of grafted seedlings graft-taken under red light was increased. It is concluded that the effect of light quality using LED on graft-taking of watermelon grafted seedlings was significantly recognized. Considering the duration of quality of grafted seedlings graft-taken under artificial lighting, LED could be used as an effective lighting sources to validate the continuance of seedling quality.

A Chinese cabbage is one of important vegetables which accounts for more than 60 percent of leaf vegetable. However, cultivation area and yield of Chinese cabbage are steadily decreasing recently. Because meteorological changes destabilize the balance of Chinese cabbage, we need to study on meteorological factors affecting estimation of Chinese cabbage yield. So we conducted a panel analysis using mean temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, precipitation and sunshine's duration from August to November for estimation of Chinese cabbage yield. As the results, we found that if the mean temperature of September increase by $1^{\circ}C$ the amount of production of Chinese cabbage per unit area was increased by 348.6 kg/10a. We also found that the mean temperature of October increased by 174.8 kg/10a, that of November 148 kg/10a, the difference between the maxium temperature and the minimum temperature of October equals 443.3 kg/10a. However, we found that the difference between the maximum temperature and the minimum temperature of November decreased 274.1 kg/10a.

The main purpose of these studies was to obtain the basic informations necessary to develop soybean varieties. Two determinate soybean varieties, Hwangkeumkong and Jangyeobkong, and two indeterminate varieties, Clark and Williams were used to study the differences in growth and yield characters. Indeterminate varieties showed 30 days longer in days from intial flowering to terminal leaf stage and increased 7-8 more nodes on mainstem after initial flowering than determinate varieties. Determinate varieties were greater at middle-upper part, while indeterminate varieties were greater in middle part for the dry weight of the pods and stem at maturity. Total dry weight per unit area was greater in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones from the early growth to maturity. However, the duration of vegetative growth was longer and the ability to keep leaf area index in the late growth stage was higher in indeterminate varieties. Variations among plants were greater in the order of branch related characters > mainstem, total vegetative, and yield related characters > morphological characters of mains tern and 100 seed weight. In general, variations of vegetative characters formed in the early growth stage were greater than those of yield characters formed in the late growth stage. On the other hand, the variations of those characters were greater in indeterminate varieties than in determinate ones. Variation of a seed weight within a plant was much smaller in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones : i.e. coefficients of variation of a seed weight within a plant were from 13.6 to 13.8% in determinate varieties and were from 18.5 to 21.1% in indeterminate varieties, respectively.
