  • This paper describes that the leaf spring damper(LSD) developed by authors can be controled by side clearance between side cover and leaf spring. The test rig and two prototype dampers with different side clearance were manufactured. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of side clearance on the damping of leaf spring damper. The stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained from the displacements and the reaction forces generated by rotating the eccentric shaft. All dynamic coeffficients are plotted with the excitation frequency which is adjusted by rotating speed of shaft.

  • A leaf spring, especially the longitudinal type is liable and persistent element in automotive suspension system. In the present scenario the composite materials are widely used in the automobile industries has shown a great interest in the replacement of steel spring due to high strength by weight ratio. Previous investigations focused on stresses and displacement analysis of single leaf spring for different materials. The present work aims to design and analysis of leaf spring for two different cases by considering the Young's modulus to yield strength ratio. In the first case the analysis deals with the design and analysis of a single cantilever solid triangle beam which is an equivalent beam of a spring with three leaves having uniform strength. In the second case a 3-beams of rectangular cross section has been considered which is equivalent to a spring with three leaves. The analysis was carried out based on contact mechanics approach. The results were compared, that the fiberglass composite leaf spring is suitable for high loading capacity, reliability and efficiency.

  • The leaf spring is used in the suspension of most buses and trucks due to its compactness, which reduces the shock-force and the vibration from the road, and increases passenger comfortability and carlife. Of the various kinds of leaf springs, the leaf spring without eyes can be found easily in the heavy duty truck, and has different characteristics to the leaf spring with eyes in the case of large free camber. Because of radius change, the leaf without eyes slips on the supports, which makes the deflection. The difference is due to this deflection. In this paper, we show the general method of characteristic analysis, for example, Pandan method, can be no more applicable to these springs. Thus considering the geometry deflection by slip, we have developed the equation of the characteristic of the leaf spring without eyes and prove the effectiveness of this equation by experiment. From the result, at large camber the slip deflection is large and as camber smaller, this is smaller. At the camber behind some value, the effect of slip no longer influence to the characteristic of leaf springs.

  • The leaf spring for a truck absorbs shocks or vibrations from the road surface while driving with the elastic force of the material and prevents the shock from being transmitted to the vehicle body. It is subjected to cyclic stress, and fatigue fracture occurs frequently. This study analyzes fractured leaf spring from a 25 ton truck that has been operating for about a year. In the fractured portion, which is the origin of crack, inclusions were observed, and fatigue failure was caused by cyclic stress. In the stress calculation and FE analysis, the stress at the center of the leaf spring was obtained to be 54~65% of the yield strength of the base material and damaged material. It is most important to prevent the mixing of impurities in the steel manufacturing for leaf springs. The large stress portion of the leaf spring needs to introduce compressive residual stress by peening etc.

  • In this paper, the natural frequencies of curved taper leaf springs using on vehicle suspension systems are studied. By applying the Castigliano's definition, Rayleigh's principle and Dunkerley's equation, new formulas defining the natural frequency of such shaped spring are derived. Numerical calculations are in very good agreement with experimental results on actual models. We found that the natural frequencies of curved taper spring are increased by 21-28% compared with the spring having same weight, span and curve but uniform section.

  • The purpose of present paper is to prove an improvement on stability of plane Journal bearing due to the leaf spring damper(LSD) experimentally A flexible rotor system is designed and manufackuea in order to generate oil whip instability of journal bearing at relative lower rotating speed. Vibration amplitude and instability onset speeds are investigated for a conventional plane journal bearing and plane journal bearing with LSD. To investigate the damping effects of LSD on stability of bearing, experiments are also conducted on the leaf spring dampers with and without working oil. It is found that the leaf spring damper can considerably increase the instability onset speed of a plane journal bearing.

  • In this study, the deformation and stress are analyzed through modal and harmonic response analysis at resonance on leaf spring. The displacement range of 7 to 14 mm is shown at natural frequencies as 6 kinds of resonance modes. The maximum deformation is shown as 8.8781mm at Mode 2. The maximum displacement and stress at leaf spring are shown as 0.0458 mm and 72.533 MPa respectively on 1200 Hz. The comfortability of passenger becomes better on leaf spring at suspension system by use of this design model.

  • As the rotating speed of rotors is increased, the instability and power loss become serious problems. Gas bearings are introduced as a good solution to those problems. But in the development of gas bearings, high load capacity and high damping force to vibrations are required. In this study a new air bearing using leaf spring pad is introduced to improve load capacity and damping force. The experimental results of the leaf spring pad air bearings show high load capacity and high damping forces. And the results show that leaf spring pad air bearings can be simultaneously acted as radial and thrust bearings
