Formation of Soluble Intermediate During the Electrochemical Crystallization of Lead Dioxide

  • Details on the electrochemical formation of lead dioxide from aqueous plumbous ion are studied by measuring current-time behavior with potential step method at a rotating platinum electrode. A cubic law without induction period can be applied to the crystallization of lead dioxide in both acetate and nitrate media. In the course of the mechanistic study, the presence of a soluble intermediate during the nucleation step is clearly observed with a rotating ring-disk electrode. Decrease in the anodic ring current due to the reduction of soluble species formed during the anodic crystallization of lead dioxide at disk is detected.

전착이산화납 결정구조가 전해에 의한 오존발생에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Electrodeposited Lead Dioxide Structure on the Ozone Evolution)

  • 여러 가지 전착 조건에서 티타늄 기판상에 이산화납을 전착시킨 전극을 사용하여 전해질 용액 중에서 오존을 발생시킬 경우 전착된 이산화납의 결정표면 양상이 오존발생 전류효율에 미치는 영향과 이산화납 전극의 표면구조 변화를 고찰하였다. 또한 백금 디스크전극 위에 이산화납을 전착시킨 회전전극을 이용하여 산소전이반응이 오존발생에 미치는 영향과 오존발생용 전극으로 개발하기 위해 이산화납의 내식성과 오존발생 최적 전류밀도도 검토하였다. 전착한 이산화납의 결정표면 입자가 크고 결정성이 좋은 전극일수록 오존발생 전류효율이 높았으며 이러한 오존발생용 이산화납 전극을 전착시키기 위한 최적전류밀도는 $50mA/cm^2$이었으며 전착용액에 글리세린을 소량 첨가하면 오존발생에 유리한 결정구조를 갖는 이산화납이 전착되었다. 또한 $10mA/cm^2$ 이하의 너무 낮거나 $100mA/cm^2$ 이상의 너무 높은 전류밀도에서는 오존발생 성능이 떨어지고 소지금속에 대한 접착성이 좋지 않은 전극이 만들어 졌다. 새로 만들어진 이산화납전극을 오존발생용으로 사용할 때 사용 초기 단계에서 이산화납전극의 표면구조 변화가 일어나며 이는 오존발생에 유리한 효과를 가져왔다. 타원소를 도핑시킨 이산화납 전극에서는 오존발생보다 산소발생 반응이 활발하게 일어나 오존발생은 산소발생의 중간 단계를 거치지 않고 산소발생과는 경쟁적으로 일어나는 것으로 추정되며 $0.7{\sim}0.8A/cm^2$의 전류밀도에서 최대의 오존발생 전류효율을 나타내었다.

  • This experiment Was carried out under two points of view, from May 1st to the end of 1973. One was the comparative determination of the activation factor of Lead dioxide by kinds in measuring of Sulfur oxides concentration by $PbO_2$ cylinder method, and the other was the comparison that result with the record of auto analyzer. Five measuring sites were selected out of Seoul City. Three kinds of Lead dioxide made in Japan (B,C and D) were compared with Standard $PbO_2$ (A for use in Determination of Sulphur in the atmosphere, purity 99% up) made in British Institution, and monthly measuring was conducted at every sampling site. The recording by auto analyzer (Beckman Model 906-A $SO_2$ Analyzer) was conducted once or twice a month for 24 hours at each sampling site during the same period. And some significant results were obtained. 1. In comparative experiments to determine the activation degree of three kinds of Lead dioxide (B,C and D), the obtained correction factor of B reagent was 1.09, 1.16 in C and 1.30 in D against Standard $PbO_2$ (A). Therefore, it should be in need of standardization or clear statement about the reagents for use, in determination sulfur oxides by $PbO_2$ cylinder method. 2. Generally, the concentration of Sulfur dioxide by wilkins' convertion method from $SO_3$ showed about 20-30% higher than those by Auto analyzer.

납이 용해된 전해액을 사용하는 레독스 플로우 전지의 특성 (Characteristics of Redox Flow Battery Using the Soluble Lead Electrolyte)

  • 납이 용해된 수용성메탄술폰산을 전해액으로 사용하는 레독스 플로우 전지의 전기화학적 특성과 성능을 평가하였다. 납과 이산화납의 부착, 용해과정을 평가하기 위해 전압전류법을 실시하였다. 음전위쪽으로 순방향 주사에서 뚜렷한 환원피크는 관찰되지 않고, 전류는 서서히 증가하였다. 음전위 구간에서 역방향 주사에서 산화피크의 on-set potential은 -0.47 V(vs SCE)에서 관찰되었다. 양전위 구간에서는 순방향과 역방향에서 뚜렷한 피크가 나타났다. 비이커 셀내에 설치된 전극으로 충방전 실험을 실시하였다. 납의 충전(부착)은 약 0.5 V(vs SCE), 납의 방전(용해)는 약 0.25 V(vs SCE)에서 진행되었으며, 충전 및 방전시의 전위 차이는 약 0.25 V이다. 이산화납의 초기 충전(부착)은 1.7 V(vs SCE)에서 진행되었고, 방전(용해)은 0.95 V 부근의 일정전위에서 진행되었다. 두번째 사이클에서, 충전은 1.5 V(vs SCE)이하에서 시작되고, 이후 전위가 1.7 V(vs SCE)로 증가하였다. 방전 전위는 약 1.0 V로 안정적으로 유지하였다.

In-Situ Spectroelectrochemical Studies of Manganese(II) Oxidation

  • In-situ spectroelectrochemical studies have been carried out on the oxidation of Mn(II) at platinum, gold, lead dioxide, and bismuth doped lead dioxide electrodes. The Mn(III), $MnO_2$, and/or ${MnO_4}^-$ species are produced depending on experimental conditions employed during electrolysis. Mn(III) is shown to be produced from a very early stage during the anodic potential scan and undergo disproportionation-conproportionation reactions depending on the relative concentration of each species near the electrode surface. An oxidation mechanism consistent with these observations is proposed.

Effect of Deposition Parameters on the Morphology and Electrochemical Behavior of Lead Dioxide

  • Lead dioxide thin films were electrodeposited on nickel substrate from acidic lead nitrate solution. Current efficiency and thickness measurements, cyclic voltammetry, AFM, SEM, and X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted on $PbO_2$ surface to elucidate the effect of lead nitrate concentration, current density, temperature on the morphology, chemical behavior, and crystal structure. Experimental results showed that deposition efficiency was affected by the current density and solution concentration. The film thickness was independent of current density when deposition from high $Pb(NO_3)_2$ concentration, while it decreased for low concentration and high current density deposition. On the other hand, deposition temperature had negative effect on current efficiency more for lower current density deposition. Cyclic voltammetric study revealed that comparatively more ${\beta}-PbO_2$ produced compact deposits when deposition was carried out from high $Pb(NO_3)_2$ concentration. Such compact films gave lower charge discharge current density during cycling. SEM and AFM studies showed that deposition of regular-size sharp-edge grains occurred for all deposition conditions. The grain size for high temperature and low concentration $Pb(NO_3)_2$ deposition was bigger than from low temperature and high concentration deposition conditions. While cycling converted all grains into loosely adhered flappy deposit with numerous pores. X-ray diffraction measurement indicates that high concentration, high temperature, and high current density favored ${\beta}-PbO_2$ deposition while ${\alpha}-PbO_2$ converted to ${\beta}-PbO_2$ together with some unconverted $PbSO_4$ during cycling in $H_2SO_4$.

  • To protect corrosion of bronze roofing tile for Choson Royal Historic Museum, lead coating on tile was performed by electroplating method with thickness of $35\mum$. Lead coated tile samples were inverstigated what corrosion products were formed with color changes on them by testing Accelerated Weathering. No sulfides were formed on samples contacting with 300ppm sulfur dioxide and any color changes were not found. In Accelerated Weathering test, White hydrocerussite, basic lead carbonate($2PbCO_3Pb(OH)_2$) having protective structure made of compact adhering crystals.

Electrocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide on Sn-Pb Alloy Electrodes

  • Electrocatalytic reduction can produce useful chemicals and fuels such as carbon monoxide, methane, formate, aldehydes, and alcohols using carbon dioxide, the green house gas, as a reactant through the supply of electrical energy. In this study, tin-lead (Sn-Pb) alloy electrodes are fabricated by electrodeposition on a carbon paper with different alloy composition and used as cathode for electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide into formate in an aqueous system. The prepared electrodes are measured by Faradaic efficiency and partial current density for formate production. Electrocatalytic reduction experiments are carried out at -1.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) using H-type cell under ambient temperature and pressure and the gas and liquid products are analyzed by gas chromatograph and liquid chromatograph, respectively. As results, the Sn-Pb electrodes show higher Faradaic efficiency and partial current density than the single metal electrode. The Sn-Pb alloy electrode which have Sn:Pb molar ratio=2:1, shows the highest Faradaic efficiency of 88.7%.

  • On the electrolytic preparation of sodium chlorate, lead dioxide anode, instead of graphite was tested to find out the characteristics for current efficiency and life in various conditions. The results obtained are summerized as follows; 1. The current efficiency is slightly increased with the anode current density, until 25A/$dm^2$ 2. The higher the current concentrations. the lower current efficiencies are observed, particularly in case of both not-adding the potassium dichromate and large current concentration of more than 50A/l 3. The current efficiency may be improved linearly as the both temperature is raised.

  • Different behavior on the formation of soluble intermediate was observed depending on the substrate employed during the nucleation of lead dioxide from plumbous ion using a rotating ring-disk electrode. It was found that no soluble intermediate was formed at glassy carbon electrode, while the presence of soluble intermediate could be detected at platinum substrate. From the different anodic behavior of two substrates, the formation of a probable Pb(Ⅲ) soluble intermediate was suggested. A most probable nucleation mechanism at the platinum substrate involving a second order chemical reaction was derived on the basis of rotating disk electrode experiments.
