A new 80Ti-15Ta-5Zr wt% alloy surface was protected by anodic oxidation in phosphoric acid solution. The protective oxide layer (TiO2, ZrO2 and Ta suboxides and thickness of 15.5 nm) incorporated $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions from the solution, according to high resolution XPS spectra. The AFM analysis determined a high roughness with SEM detected pores (20 - 50 nm). The electrochemical studies of bare and anodically oxidized Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy in Carter-Brugirard saliva of different pH values and saliva with 0.05M NaF, pointed to a nobler surface for the protected alloy, with a thicker electrodeposited oxide layer acting as a barrier against aggressive ions. The oxidized alloy significantly decreased corrosion current densities and total quantity of ions released into the oral environment in comparison with the bare one, at higher polarisation resistance and protective capacity of the electrodeposited layer. The impedance data revealed a bi-layered oxidation film formed by: a dense, compact, barrier layer in contact with the metallic substrate, decreasing the potential gradient across the metal/oxide layer/solution interface, reducing the anodic dissolution and a more permissive, porous layer in contact with the electrolyte. The open circuit potential for protected alloy shifted to nobler values, with thickening of the oxidation film signifying long-term protection.
We have investigated the traits of clad metals in hot-rolled clad steel plates, including the sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel (A516), under various specific circumstances regarding post heat treatment, multilayered welds, and thick or repeated welds for repair. For evaluations, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by micro vickers hardness, tensile, and etching tests the results were compared with those of EPR tests. The clad steel plates were butt-welded using FCAW and SAW with the time of heat treatment as the variable, a that was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, and 1280 min. Then, the change in corrosion resistance was evaluated in these specimens. With carbon steel (A516), as the heat treatment time increased, the annealing effect caused the tensile strength to decrease. The micro-hardness gradually increased and decreased after 640 min. The elongation and contraction of the area also increased gradually. The oxalic acid etch test and EPR test on STS316 and the clad metal showed STEP structure and no sensitization. From the test results on multi-layered and repair welds, it could be concluded that there is no effect on the corrosion resistance of clad metals. The purpose of this study was to suggest some considerations for developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.

Various types of multilayer coatings including Al/$Al_2O_3$ structure have been prepared on Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet to modify the morphology of the coating and to enhance the corrosion resistance of the magnet. Magnetron sputtering has been employed to make the multilayer coatings. $Al_2O_3$sputtering conditions were optimized in reactive sputtering by varying the deposition parameters. The formation of $Al_2O_3$ film was confirmed from the binding energy shift measured by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. 3 types of coating structures were designed and prepared by magnetron sputtering. The coating structures consist of (1) single Al coating, (2) modified coatings having oxide or plasma treated layer in the middle of coating structure, and (3) Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer coatings. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies showed that Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer grew as a layered structure, and that very compact Zone 3 like structure were formed. X-ray diffraction peak showed that the crystal orientations of multilayer coatings were similar to that of the bulk powder pattern. Hardness increased drastically when the Al thickness was around 1im in the Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer. From the salt spray test and pressure cooker test, it has been shown that the multilayer coatings showed good corrosion resistance compared to Al single or modified layer coatings.

Graphene was coated on STS 316L by electro spray coating method to improve its properties of corrosion resistance and contact resistance. Exfoliated graphite (graphene) was made of the graphite by chemical treatment. Graphene is distributed using dispersing agent, and STS 316L was coated with diffuse graphene solution by electro spray coating method. The structure of the exfoliated graphite was analyzed using XRD and the coating layer of surface was analyzed by using SEM. Analysis showed that multi-layered graphite structure was destroyed and it was transformed into fine layers graphene structure. And the result of SEM analysis on the surface and the cross section, graphene layer was uniformly formed with 3~5 ${\mu}m$ thickness on the surface of substrate. Corrosion resistance test was applied in the corrosive solution which is similar to the PEM fuel cell stack inside. And interfacial contact resistance test was measured to simulate the internal operating conditions of PEM fuel cell stack. The results of measurements show that stainless steel coated with graphene was improved in corrosion resistance and surface contact resistance than stainless steel without graphene coating layer.

Deterioration of reinforced concrete structures due to salt corrosion is a phenomenon that can be easily seen, and the main reason for deterioration is chloride ion. Therefore, researches are actively conducted to control chlorine ion penetration worldwide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the chloride ion fixation capacity of Portland cement paste containing Hydrotalcite. For this purpose, cement paste containing 0%, 2.5%, and 5% of Hydrotalcite was sealed and cured for 28 days, and the cured cement paste was crushed. Chloride ion solution was prepared at a concentration of 0.5M using NaCl, and the powdered cement paste was reacted for a specific time in aqueous chloride ion solution. After the reaction, the concentration of the chloride ion aqueous solution was measured using a silver nitrate potentiometric titrator, and the reacted cement paste was analyzed using XRD and FT-IR.

For the phase boundary crack found in the gasket made of cast austenitic stainless steel in the nuclear power plant, the oxide layers were analyzed through SEM and TEM. The results showed that cracks initiated and propagated along the austenite/δ-ferrite phase boundary, the propagation path was changed to penetrate the inside of the phase. The oxide layer located at the periphery of the crack along the phase boundary was identified as a complex multi-layered spinel structure, and Cr-rich carbides were also detected in the oxide. The cracks that propagated inside the austenite matrix were attributed to the presence of high external stresses and impurities.

The past structures were just required bearing capacity to service load, serviceability, and resistance to corrosion. However this point of view has changed after 9.11 terrorism, capacities which can bear impact loading by explosion, and heat by fire happening at the same time, become to be important as a basic condition. The blast resistance capacity of structures is very important part against all over the world is intimidated by terrorism everyday in current point of time. The target of this research is a development of segmented composites and layered structures with high blast resistance using cementitious composites, concrete and FRP composites, which has high tensile strength and ductility, to apply in not only existing facilities but also new ones. Through the improvement of blast resistance, casualties and economic loss can be minimized, and it is possible to diminish the structure collapse and delay the time of structure collapse by thermal effect, impact loading, dynamic loading and high strain.
Fe-aluminides have the potential to replace many types of stainless steels that are currently used in structural applications. Once commercialized, it is expected that they will be twice as strong as stainless steels with higher corrosion resistance at high temperatures, while their average production cost will be approximately 10% of that of stainless steels. Self-propagating, high-temperature Synthesis (SHS) has been used to produce intermetallic and ceramic compounds from reactions between elemental constituents. The driving force for the SHS is the high thermodynamic stability during the formation of the intermetallic compound. Therefore, the advantages of the SHS method include a higher purity of the products, low energy requirements and the relative simplicity of the process. In this work, a Fe-aluminide intermetallic compound was formed from high-purity elemental Fe and Al foils via a SHS reaction in a hot press. The formation of iron aluminides at the interface between the Fe and Al foil was observed to be controlled by the temperature, pressure and heating rate. Particularly, the heating rate plays the most important role in the formation of the intermetallic compound during the SHS reaction. According to a DSC analysis, a SHS reaction appeared at two different temperatures below and above the metaling point of Al. It was also observed that the SHS reaction temperatures increased as the heating rate increased. A fully dense, well-bonded intermetallic composite sheet with a thickness of $700\;{\mu}m$ was formed by a heat treatment at $665^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours after a SHS reaction of alternatively layered 10 Fe and 9 Al foils. The phases and microstructures of the intermetallic composite sheets were confirmed by EPMA and XRD analyses.
Concrete is cost-benefit and high-durable construction material, however durability problem can be caused due to steel corrosion under chloride attack. Recently deicing salt has been widely spread in snowing season, which accelerates micro-cracks and scaling in surface concrete and the melted deicing salt causes corrosion in embedded steel. The previous governing equation of Fick's 2nd Law cannot evaluate the deteriorated surface concrete so that another technique is needed for the surface effect. This paper presents chloride penetration analysis technique for concrete subjected to deicing salt utilizing multi-layer diffusion model and time-dependent diffusion behavior. For the work, field investigation results of concrete pavement exposed deicing salt for 18 years are adopted. Through reverse analysis, deteriorated depth and increased diffusion coefficient in the depth are evaluated, which shows 12.5~15.0mm of deteriorated depth and increased diffusion coefficient by 2.0 times. The proposed technique can be effectively applied to concrete with two different diffusion coefficients considering enhanced or deteriorated surface conditions.
Sputter-deposited Nb-Al-Cr alloys. $3-5{\mu}m$ thick, have been prepared on quartz substrates as oxidation-and sulfidation-resistant materials at high temperatures. The oxidation or the alloys in the $Ar-O_2$ atmosphere of an oxygen partial pressure of 20 kPa follows approximately the parabolic rate law, thus being diffusion controlled. Their oxidation rates are almost the same as or even lower than those ofthc typical chromia-forming alloys. The multi-lavered oxide scales are formed on the ternary alloys. The outermost layer is composed of $Cr_2O_3$, which is"mainly responsible for the high oxidation'resistance of these alloys. In contrast to sputter-deposited Cr-Nb binary alloys reported previously, the inner layer is not porous. TEM observation as well as EDX analysis indicates that the innermost layer is a mixture of $Al_2O_3$ and niobium oxide. The dispersion of $Al_2O_3$ in niobium oxide may be attributable to the prevention of the formation of the porous oxide layer. The sulfidation rates of the present ternary alloys arc higher than those of the sputter-deposited Nb-AI binary alloys, but still several orders of magnitude lower than those of conventional high temperature alloys. Two-layered sulfide scales are formed, consisting of an outer $Al_2S_3$ layer containing chromium and an inner layer composed of $NbS_2$ and a small amount of $Cr_2S_3$. The presence of $Cr_2S_3$ in the inner protective $NbS_2$ layer may be attributed to the increase in the sulfidation rates.
