The Multi-purpose InfraRed Imaging System (MIRIS) is the main payload of Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3), which was launched onboard Dnepr rocket from Russian Yasny Launch Base in November 2013. The MIRIS is an infrared (IR) camera, and the telescope has to be cooled down to below 200K in order to reduce thermal background noise. For the effective cooling and low-power consumption, we applied passive cooling method to the thermal design of the MIRIS. We also conducted thermal analysis and tested for the passive cooling before the launch of STSAT-3. After the launch, we have received State-of-Health (SOH) data from the satellite on orbit, including temperature monitoring results. It is important that the temperature of the telescope was shown to be cooled down to below 200K. In this paper, we present both the temperature data of the MIRIS on orbit and the thermal analysis results in the laboratory. We also compare these results and discuss the verification of the passive cooling.

A kind of Subjective Imaging Effect Assessment (SIEA) method and its applications on intelligent imaging terminal design in engineering site are presented. First, some visual assessment indices are used to characterize the imaging effect: the image brightness, the image brightness uniformity, the color image contrast, the image edge blur, the image color difference, the image saturation, the image noise, and the integrated imaging effect index. A linear weighted function is employed to carry out the SIEA computation and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique is used to estimate its weights. Second, a SIEA software is developed. It can play images after the settings of assessment index or assessment reaction time, etc. Third, two cases are used to illustrate the application effects of proposed method: the image enhancement system design for surveillance camera and the imaging environment perception system design for intelligent lighting terminal. A Prior Sequential Stimulus (PSS) experiment is proposed to improve the evaluation stability of SIEA method. Many experiment results have shown the proposed method can realize a stable system design or parameters setting for the intelligent imaging terminal in engineering site.

At the lift-off condition, the combustion and Jet noise of launch vehicle produces a severe acoustic environment and the acoustic loads may be damaging to paylaod and equipments. Prediction of the acoustic environment is thus needed to support the load-resistive design and test-qualification of components. Currently, such a high frequency problem is usually dealt with by using the SEA technique, for which the assumptions should match reasonably well with the vibro-acoustic condition of system. The subsystems of SEA model was composed of 16 flat plates, 8 L-shaped beams, and 2 acoustic cavities. The frequency range was 400 Hz - 4 kHz considering the modal parameter. The experiment was performed in a high intensity acoustic chamber, in which the diffuse acoustic field was assured. By comparing the SEA analysis and the experiments, the error less than 5 dB was observed.

Acoustic loads generated by a rocket propulsion system cause severe random vibrations on payloads. In developing a new launch vehicle, a random vibration level must be specified before the detailed design of payloads or electronic equipments. This paper deals with prediction procedures of a random vibration level on payload section of KSLV-I. The prediction is based on statistical energy analysis. In order to verify the prediction methodology, test and analysis on a sub-scale payload section are performed. The predicted results subject to very high level of acoustic loads show a good agreement with the test results performed in the high intensity acoustic chamber. The predicted random vibration level on payload section of KSLV-I is also presented in this paper.

Pulse tube-type spaceborne cryocooler is widely used to cool down the infrared sensor of observation satellites. However, such cryocooler also generates micro-vibration which is the one of main sources to seriously affect the image quality during its on-orbit operation. Therefore, to comply with the mission requirement of high resolution observation satellite, additional technical efforts have been required. In this study, we proposed a spaceborne cryocooler passive vibration isolator using SMA mesh washer, which guarantees the structural safety of both the micro-vibration disturbance source and itself under harsh launch vibration loads without an additional holding mechanism and the micro-vibration isolation performance on orbit environment. To verify the micro-vibration isolation performance of the proposed vibration isolator, we performed the micro-vibration isolation measurement test using the dedicated micro-vibration measurement device proposed in this study.

Space Test Department at KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) plans to carry out the GVT(Ground Vibration Test) for the KSR(Korea Sounding Rocket)-III FM(Flight Model) which is being developed by Space Technology R&D Division. KSR-III will be an intermediate to the launch vehicle capable of carrying satellites to their orbits. GVT offers very important information to predict the behavior of KSR in its operation, and to develop the flight control and aerodynamic analysis. For development of test facilities, testing and analysis methods which can be used for the future test, Space Test Department has performed the GVT with KSR-II PFM(Proto-Flight Model) at Satellite Integration & Test Center of KARl This paper discusses the procedures, techniques and the results of it. In this test, to simulate free-free condition, test object hung in the air by 4 bungee cords specially devised. The GVT was carried out using pure random excitation technique with MIMO(Multi-Input-Multi-Output) method with three electromagnetic shakers, and poly-reference parameter estimation was used to identify the modal parameters. As the result of the test, 11 mode shapes and modal parameters below 200㎐ were identified and compared with analytical results.

Vertically-launched missiles are supported as erected vertically in the vertical launching system of warship, and they should be mounted in the same way when vibration-tested. However, mounting missiles vertically makes a fixture, which is a supporting structure, bulky and heavy so requiring a high-performance exciter. Mounting missiles as laid down horizontally in a vibration test is economical regarding fixture manufacturing and exciter performance, but it makes test results incorrect because the different mounting direction has effects on the test results. A bending moment due to missiles' weight happens to missiles, and resilient mounts, which support missiles in the vertical launch system, deflect differently from the real situation because of the static deflection of these mounts due to missiles' weight. If the resilient mounts supporting missiles have nonlinear force-deflection characteristics, vibration test results become more different from the true results. This paper proposes to support missiles with an additional resilient mount such as a bunge code in order to solve those problems coming from mounting vertically-launched missiles as laid down horizontally in vibration tests. The proposed approach enables to obtain the same test results as in their actual mounting condition even though vertically-launched missiles are mounted in a different direction.
This paper presents the model updating of an equipment panel by using modal test and sensitivity analysis. The equipment panel is one of the major structures of communication satelite, on which broadcasting and communication equipments are mounted. For high rigidity and light weight, the panel was designed as an aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel. In addition, heat pipes were embedded in the panel for thermal control. It is essential to improve the finite element model of a spacecraft structure by using modal test in order to verify that the satellite is designed and fabricated with adequate margin under launch environment. In this paper, Young's modulus of aluminumfacesheet was selected as a modified parameter in the sensitivity analysis. The effect of boundary conditions on model improvement was also investigated.
MIRIS (Multipurpose Infra-Red Imaging System) is the first Korean Infrared Space Telescope developed by KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute), and is the main payload of STSAT-3 (Science and Technology Satellite-3). The FM (fight model) of MIRIS has been recently completed, and various performance tests have been made to measure system parameters such as readout noise, system gain, linearity, and dark current. Final thermal-vacumm test of the MIRIS and the vibration test of the electronics box have been performed. Band response tests showed good agreement with the initial design requirements. No significant dark difference was measured within the expected temperature variation range during observation in orbit. Using Pa-alpha band from a uniform source, the readout noise and system gain were measured by mean variance test. To obtain uniform flat image, flat fielding tests were made for each band, and the data will be compared to that obtained in orbit for calibration. The final version of MIRIS FM will be delivered in March, and it will be integrated into the satellite system for the AIT (Assembly Integration, Test) procedure. The launch of MIRIS is expected in November 2012.
