  • The strain sensing properties of th system xNiO-(1-x) CaO with various compositions (x=0.001-0.05) are evaluated and the origin of the phenomena is guessed. We have found out that the high temperature electrical conductivity of the xNiO-(1-x)CaO increases by applying the compressive stress at $1000^{\circ}C$. When the applied load is removed, the electrical conductivity rapidly decreases and returns to the original value, but a small hysteresis of the stress-conductivity curve is observed. After the loading test, the lattice parameter of the specimen is found lengthened. The correlation between the lengthening of the lattice parameter and the increases in the electrical conductivity by loading is discussed. The amount of the "expanded type" Ni(II)O6 clusters in the xNiO-(1-x)CaO grains is supposed to be increased by the applied stress, which would be the origin of the strain dependent electric conduction in the xNiO-(1-x)CaO system.aO system.

  • The effects of the ordering reaction on high temperature mechanical behavior is investigated by tensile tests at $2{\times}10^{-2}/s-3.3{\times}10^{-5}/s$ up to $745^{\circ}C$. The tensile deformed region is examined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), TEM, and high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD). The results showed that a plateau of tensile strength appeared at $150-500^{\circ}C$ whereas the elongation minimum occurred at about $600^{\circ}C$. This suggests that the occurrence of a plateau does not cause the elongation minimum. The temperature of the elongation minimum decreases with the strain rate. HRPD results show a lattice contraction in the tensile deformed specimen at the temperature of the plateau occurring region. The plateau of tensile strength, the lattice contraction, and the occurrence of serration appeared in the same temperature region.

  • Applying the topological theory of rubber elasticity which was suggested by K. Iwata to the newly devised body-centered cubic lattice model, the authors calculated the values of four terms of the free energy to form polymer networks. Finding the projection matrix of the BCL model, and comparing this with the values of the simple cubic lattice (abbreviated to SCL hereafter) model of K. Iwata, the authors obtained the stress versus strain curves and found that the curves are in good agreement with the experimental results of poly(dimethyl siloxane) networks.

  • The nanosized silver and gold particles are prepared by ERC method in which metal vapors with high temperature is rapidly quenched by coolants such as liquid nitrogen or liquid argon. In order to monitor the crystal structural changes on the internal and the surface of the nanosized noble metal particles, lattice parameter, internal strain and Debye-Waller factor are investigated, and the calculation of X-ray diffraction scattering intensity is performed. The lattice parameters of silver and gold particles agree with those of bulk materials, and crystal internal strain of the metal particles is not changed by rapid cooling. The Debye-Waller factor of gold particles is increased with decreasing particle size because of the surface softening phenomenon of nanosized particles, but the crystal structural change on the surface of the particles is not detected from the comparison the calculated X-ray diffraction profile with the experimental profile on gold particles with the particle size of 4 nm.

  • We studied the effect of the variation of the lattice constant on the electrical properties of $SrRuO_3$ thin films. In order to obtain films with different volumes, we varied the substrate temperature and oxygen pressure during the growth of the films on $SrTiO_3$ (001) substrates. The films were grown using a pulsed laser deposition method. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the grown films at low temperature and low oxygen pressure indicated the elongation of the c-axis lattice constant compared to that of the films grown at a higher temperature and higher oxygen pressure. The in-plane strain states are maintained for all of the films, implying the expansion of the unit-cell volume by the oxygen vacancies. The variation of the electrical resistance reflects the temperature dependence of the resistivity of the metal, with a ferromagnetic transition temperature inferred form the cusp of the curve being observed in the range from 110 K to 150 K. As the c-axis lattice constant decreases, the transition temperature linearly increases.

  • This paper discusses a feasibility of a new type of two-way system for single layer lattice domes with nodal eccentricity by investigating the dynamic behavior under earthquake motions. The proposed dome is composed of two main arches, intersecting each other with T-joint struts to provide space for tensioning membranes. The main purposes of this study are to calculate the nonlinear dynamic response under severe earthquake motions and to see the possibility of using this new type of two-way system for single layer lattice domes against earthquake motions. The results show that the main arches remain elastic except yielding of the joints of strut members that can be used to absorb some amount of strain energy at strong earthquake motion. Consequently, deformation of the main arches can be reduced and any heavy damages on the main arches can be minimized. A kind of damage-control characteristic appeared in this system may be utilized against severe earthquake motions, showing a possibility of designing a new type of single layer lattice dome.

  • We observed strain evolution of P3HT crystals in P3HT:PCBM films and the effect of Al electrode on the evolution during real time annealing process. Based on simple assumptions, both relaxed lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficient could be quantitatively determined. P3HT:PCBM films displayed tensile strain in as-prepared samples regardless of the presence of an Al layer. In the absence of Al layer, P3HT crystals showed only strain relaxation at an annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile In the presence of an Al layer, the strain was relaxed and changed to compressive strain at around 120C annealing temperature, which indicated a tightening of the thiophene ring packing. These behaviors support the improved performance of devices fabricated by post annealing process.

  • This paper describes an ab Initio study on interface energies, misfit strain energies, and electron structures at coherent interfaces Fe(bcc structure)/MCs(NaCl structure M=Ti, Zr, Hf). The interface energies at relaxed interfaces Fe/TiC, Fe/ZrC and Fe/HfC were 0.263, 0.153 and $0.271 J/m^2$, respectively. It was understood that the dependence of interface energy on the type of carbide was closely related to changes of the binding energies between Fe, M and C atoms before and after formation of the interfaces Fe/MCs with the help of the DLP/NNBB (Discrete Lattice Plane/ Nearest Neighbour Broken Bond) model and data of the electron structures. The misfit strain energies in Fe/TiC, Fe/ZrC and Fe/HfC systems were 0.390, 1.692 and 1.408 eV per 16 atoms(Fe: 8 atoms and MC; 8 atoms). More misfit energy was generated as difference of lattice parameters between the bulk Fe and the bulk MCs increased.

  • A new strain analysis model, so called the stress matched model, in an epitaxial multilayer system is proposed. The model makes it possible to know the strain, the stress, the elastic strain energy in each epitaxial layer. Analytical formulas of strain parameters in each epitaxial layer are derived under assumptions that the substrate thickness is finite and the in-plane lattice constant is the same for all epitaxial layers for dislocation free growth. As an example, the model is applied to a 405nm InGaN/InGaN multiple quantum well laser diode. Analysis result shows that AlxGa1-xN layer with Al mole fraction of 0.06 and the thickness of 6${\mu}m$ is one of good templates for a laser. In fact, this layer structure coincides with experimentally optimized one.

  • This paper reports on measurement method for the fiber optic strain monitoring of overhead contact line systems of trains, We used FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors to measure the strain variation of overhead contact line. FBG sensors can sensitively measure the variation of strain and! or temperature by the shift wavelength of reflected wave according to the lattice variation during the measurement. FBG sensor were attached on the contact line and connected to the monitoring system with optical fibers. The monitering system with FBG sensors showed very good sensitivity to measuring strain variation and this system could be applied to the overhead contact line of KTX (Korea Train eXpress).
