Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of exercise-induced fatigue of the plantar flexor muscle in the dominant ankle on the plantar flexor strength and postural control function of the contra-lateral side. Methods: Twenty-one young adults (male: 10, female: 11) volunteered to participate in this study. An exercise-induced fatigue protocol to induce fatigue was performed in the plantar flexor of the dominant ankle. For the fatigue protocol, the participants were instructed to raise their heels as high as possible in the position with one leg stance of the dominant lower limb, and the heel was then downed after holding for 1 second. The muscle strength of the contra-lateral plantar flexor was measured using a digital muscle strength test device, and the static and dynamic postural control were tested by acquiring the center of gravity velocity while performing one leg standing. A paired t-test was used to identify the differences between the pre- and post, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 software. Results: Comparison of the pre- and post-test data revealed a significant difference in the plantar flexor strength and dynamic postural control after exercise-induced muscle fatigue in the dominant side. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the static postural control. Conclusion: These findings have practical implications, suggesting that unilateral muscle fatigue affects the ankle muscle strength and postural ability of the contralateral side.
In this work, the operational deflection shape(ODS) of an automobile exhaust system is measured by using a recently-developed magnetic sensor. The magnetic sensor is composed of a solenoid and two pairs of permanent magnets generating an antisymmetric magnetic field in the lateral direction inside the solenoid. Lateral movement of a ferromagnetic pipe inside the magnetic field of the suggested sensor induces an electromotive force in the solenoid corresponding to the lateral velocity of the pipe. Due to the simplicity and non-contact characteristics of the magnetic sensor, dynamic behaviors of the structures operating under high temperature such as an exhaust pipe can be efficiently observed. It is shown that the lateral ODS of an exhaust system can be successfully measured by the suggested sensors.
this paper develops a computational model for the turning maneuver analysis of a cabover type heavy truck. The model having 42 degree-of-freedom is developed using ADAMS. Leaf springs used in the front and rear suspension systems are modeled by dividing it three links and joining them with joints. Force and displacement relationship showing nonlinear hysteric characteristics of the leaf spring is measured and modeled with an exponential function. A velocity and force relationship of a shock absorber is measured and modeled with a spline function. And a stabilizer bar is modeled using ADAMS beam element to consider a twisting and bending effect. To verify the developed model an actual vehicle test is performed in the double lane change course with 50kph and 60kph vehicle velocity. In the actual vehicle test lateral acceleration roll angle and yaw rate are measured, The tendency and peak-to-peak values of the actual vehicle test and simultion results are compared each other.
Experimental study is conducted to identify the existence of a shrinking flame disk and to clarify its flame characteristics through the inspection of critical mole fraction at flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames. Experiments are made as varying global strain rate, velocity ratio, and burner distance. The transition from a shrinking flame disk to a flame hole is verified through gradient measurements of maximum flame temperature. The evidence of edge flame oscillation in flame disk is also provided through numerical simulation in microgravity. It is found at low strain rate flame disks in normal gravity that buoyancy effects are importantly contributing to lateral heat loss to burner rim, and is proven through critical mole fraction at flame extinction, edge flame oscillation, and measurements of flame temperature gradient along flame disk surface.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the changes of postural sway and muscle activation while standing upright and performing a dual task. Methods: Nine healthy adults were recruited and provided their written informed consent. They performed a balance task with and without a cognitive task on a force flatform (Good balance, Metitur Ltd., Filand). Postural sway was measured as medio-lateral and anterior-posterior distance and the velocity of the center of pressure and muscle activations of the ankle dorsi- and plantar-muscle was measured. The recruits completed three trials and the data was analyzed by a paired t-test. Results: There were significant differences in the medio-lateral and anterior-posterior distance and the velocity of the center of pressure, and significant increases in the muscle activities of the tibialis anterior. Conclusion: These findings revealed that performing a dual task increases postural sway and muscle activation of the ankle when simultaneously maintaining balance and performing another cognitive task. Future studies should focus on balance training with a dual task for patients.
Conventional two-wheeled balancing robots are limited in terms of turning speed because they lack the lateral motion to compensate for the centrifugal force needed to stop rollover. In order to improve lateral stability, this paper suggests a two-wheeled balancing mobile platform equipped with a tilting mechanism to generate roll motions. In terms of static force analysis, it is shown that the two-body sliding type tilting method is more suitable for small-size mobile robots than the single-body type. For the mathematical modeling, the tilting-balancing platform is assumed as a 3D inverted pendulum and the four-degrees-of-freedom equation of motion is derived. In the velocity/posture control loop, the desired tilting angle is naturally determined according to the changes of forward velocity and steering yaw rate. The efficiency of the developed tilting type balancing mobile platform is validated through experimental results.
Human body is hard to be in perfect balance during walking. Most of time the trunk is supported by one leg and the center of mass(COM) falls to the contralateral side. Thus, dynamic variables such as the velocity of the COM should be considered when gait stability is evaluated. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the extrapolated center of mass(XCom) which utilized the COM position and its velocity, is appropriate to evaluate gait stability. Ten healthy adults participated in this study and performed 3 different types of gaits(normal(NG), hands on waists(HWG), and hands on shoulders(HSG)) onto 4 different types of obstacle(obstacle height: 0%, 30%, 40% and 50% of leg length). Medio-lateral Com-CoP and XCom-CoP inclination angle were calculated during support phase. For all condition, greater M-L XCoM-CoP inclination angles were found(p<.05) compared with those of matched obstacle height CoM-CoP. Especially, M-L XCoM-CoP inclination angle at 50% height revealed the best condition for monitoring dynamic stability. Significantly increased in M-L XCoM-CoP inclination angle was found(p<.05) as obstacle height increased on NG and HWG.
This paper addresses a method for evaluating perceived velocities of the graphic module in a driving simulator. The major two graphic factors associated with perceived velocities are analyzed: they are the lateral distance between a virtual driver and an array of environmental objects and the textural density of these objects. A graphical representation of a vehicle and its surrounding environment are constructed by employing a three-dimensional tool, Pro/ENGINEER and a virtual environment, dVISE. Using the developed virtual driving environment, experiments have been carried out to formulate the relationship between velocity perception and each factor. Based on the experimental results, nonlinear regression equations are derived to show how the perceived velocities are dependent upon distance/density.
In this study, breakwater model which has several outlet pipes to discharge water is settled in the experimental open channel and mean velocity distributions of multi wall jet are measured. The length of flow of flow establishment of wall jet is shorter than that of free jet and decay rate of jet centerline longitudinal velocity along x is linear in 0.3 $\leq$ x/$\l_q$$\leq$ 17. The rate of vertical width and lateral width spreading of multi wall jet is respectively 0.0753, 0.157~0.190.
