Inverse Kinematic Analysis for a three-axis Hydraulic Fatigue Simulator Coupling (3축 유압 피로 시뮬레이터의 커플링에 대한 역기구학적 해석)

  • The fatigue happening during the road riding of the vehicle and for the moment the aircraft lands on the runway is closely related to the life cycle of the landing gear, the airframe, the vehicle's suspension, etc. The multiple loads acting on the wheel are longitudinal, lateral, vertical, and braking forces. To study the dynamic characteristics and fatigue stiffness of the vehicle, the dynamic fatigue simulator generally has been used to represent the real road vibration in the lab. It can save time and cost. In hardware, the critical factor in the hydraulic fatigue simulator structure is to decouple each axis and to endure several load vibration. In this paper, the inverse kinematic analysis method derives the magnitude of movement of the hydraulic servo actuator by the coupling after rendering the maximum movement displacement in the axial direction at the center of the dummy wheel. The result of the analysis is that the coupling between the axes is weak to reproduce the real road vibrations precisely.

Analysis of Sandwich Plates with Composite Facings based on Zig-Zag Models (지그재그 모델에 의한 복합샌드위치평판의 해석)

  • This study presents a governing equations of bending behavior of sandwich plates with thick metal, polymer composite facings. Based on zig-zag models for through thickness deformations, the transverse shear deformation of composite facings is included. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported. Results of the bending analysis under lateral loads are presented for the influence of various lay up sequences of antisymmetric angle-ply laminated facings. The accuracy of the approach is ascertained by comparing solutions from the sandwich plates theory with composite facings to the laminated plates theory. Since the present analysis considers the bending stiffness of the core and also the transverse shear deformations of the laminated facings, the proposed method showed higher than that calculated according to the general laminated plates theory. The information presented might be useful to design sandwich plates structure with metal, polymer matrix composite facings.

Seismic response of masonry infilled RC frames: practice-oriented models and open issues

  • Although it is widely accepted that the interaction -between masonry infill and structural members significantly affects the seismic response of reinforced concrete (RC) frames, this interaction is generally neglected in current design-oriented seismic analyses of structures. Moreover, the role of masonry infill is expected to be even more relevant in the case of existing frames designed only for gravitational loads, as infill walls can significantly modify both lateral strength and stiffness. However, the additional contribution to both strength and stiffness is often coupled to a modification of the global collapse mechanisms possibly resulting in brittle failure modes, generally related to irregular distributions of masonry walls throughout the frame. As a matter of principle, accurate modelling of masonry infill should be at least carried out by adopting nonlinear 2D elements. However, several practice-oriented proposals are currently available for modelling masonry infill through equivalent (nonlinear) strut elements. The present paper firstly outlines some of the well-established models currently available in the scientific literature for modelling infill panels in seismic analyses of RC frames. Then, a parametric analysis is carried out in order to demonstrate the consequences of considering such models in nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of existing RC structures. Two bay-frames with two-, three- and four-storeys are considered for performing nonlinear analyses aimed at investigating some critical aspects of modelling masonry infill and their effects on the structural response. Particularly, sensitivity analyses about specific parameters involved in the definition of the equivalent strut models, such as the constitutive force-displacement law of the panel, are proposed.

A Column Shortening on High-Rise Building and Structural Effect under seismic load (초고층 건물의 기둥축소와 지진하중에 대한 구조적 영향)

  • The necessity of a high-rise building in big cities gave a new problem to structural engineers. The shortening effect of vertical members needs special considerstion in the desigh and construction of high-rise buildings. The shortening of each column transfers load to nonstructural members such as partitions, cladding, and M/E systems which are not designed to carry gravity loads. Also, the slabs and beams will tilt due to the cumulative differential shortening of adjacent vertical members. The main purpose of estimating the total shortening of vertical structural members is to compensate the differential shortening between adjacent members. This paper presents the structural effect of differential shortening between in main structural members. Lateral earthquake load is applied to the 52 story concrete structure which has an initial vertical displacement due to the gravity load. Shortening amount for each vertical member was estimated using the computerized column shortening software. Comparison of stresses between the shortening corrected structure and the uncorrecated structure due to earthquake load was discussed.

  • High-rise building for dwelling has many factors to be considered in structural aspects. In particular, the higher the building, the bigger the lateral loads such as wind and earthquake due to its dynamic characteristics. Unlike the wind load, the earthquake load, even if the shape of the structures are similar, depends on structural characteristics and it is difficult to predict. For an apartment building, the water tank in the penthouse, due to its heavy weight, changes the behavior of a building when the earthquake occurs. The purpose of this study is to determine how the water tank affects the behavior of an apartment building when earthquake occurs. Dynamic analysis was accomplished on two cases - 1) water tank is considered 2) water tank is not considered - to understand how it affects the behavior of a high-rise apartment building. Structural design was accomplished to understand how the water tank and the peak acceleration affects each structural member. The effect of the water tank on the response of structure was large. Elsewhere the water tank has no effect on the design of a strutural member. However some structural members were affected when the peak acceleration of an earthquake is 0.4g.

A Study on the Structural Behaviour of Staggered Truss System by the Shape of Truss (트러스 형태에 따른 스태거드트러스 골조시스템의 구조특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper analyzed structural behaviors of the staggered truss system, typically used in low seismicity regions, resisting the lateral loads such as wind and seismic load. A comparative study of cost and efficiency was carried out by analysing and designing the 10- and 20-story buildings with various types of truss, including pratt, howe, warren, K-, and vierendeel, which may typically be used in staggered truss system. In design, column and truss members are selected in group, and the efficiency of the member design was judged by average demand capacity ratio of the all members in same group. And economic analysis of the system was investigated by the quantity of the structural members. As a result, staggered truss system with the pratt truss and warren truss showed the most economical and efficient performance for 10-story building, and 20-story building, respectively.

  • The application of the diagrid structural system has increased of late, but cyclic loadings such as winds and earthquakes cannot be fully understood through only an analytical study due to the difficulty of considering its welding property. In this study, diagrid nodes that had been scaled down to 1/5 of their full sizes were tested to find out their structural behavior under seismic or wind loads. Four specimens were used with five parameters, including the welding method and the design details. Cyclic loading tests were carried out, where a tensile load was applied to one brace member and a compression load to the other. The major failure modes in the tests were only failure of bending with tensile stress and tension failure. The welding method and the design details had no effect on the initial stiffness and yielding stress but play a significant role in the failure mode and energy dissipation, respectively.

  • Although attachments have been utilized for a retainer of removable prostheses during several decades, there is little information on the force distribution by the attachments. This study was undertaken to evaluate the stress patterns developed by partial dentures employing rigid attachments on the supporting structures. Four types of the mandibular removable partial dentures were designed depending upon the position of the rigid attachment and the existency of lingual bracing. Under 100N of vertical and 25N of lateral loads on the 1st and 2nd lower molar of partial denture, stress distribution patterns and displacement were analysed with three dimensional finite element method by ANSYS version 5.3. 1. The highest stresses were concentrated on the distal alveolar crest of posterior abutment and the second stresses on the apical region of posterior abutment in the models. 2. The greatest displacement were shown on the distal alveolar crest of posterior abutment and the second displacement on the distal alveolar crest of anterior abutment in the models. 3. There was little difference between the models with intraoral attachment and those with extracoronal attachment. 4. There was little difference between the models with and without the lingual bracing.

Monitoring in-service performance of fibre-reinforced foamed urethane sleepers/bearers in railway urban turnout systems

  • Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called 'railway turnout'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction complexities may dominate the choice of track forms or certain components. With the difficulty to seek for high-quality timbers with dimensional stability, a methodology to replace aged timber bearers in harsh dynamic environments is to adopt an alternative material that could mimic responses and characteristics of timber in both static and dynamic loading conditions. A critical review has suggested an application of an alternative material called fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU). The full-scale capacity design makes use of its comparable engineering characteristics to timber, high-impact attenuation, high damping property, and a longer service life. A field trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, 'fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)' bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle 'AK Car'), track settlement (based on survey data), track dynamics, and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. Comparative studies show that the use of FFU bearers generates higher rail and sleeper accelerations but the damping capacity of the FFU help suppress vibration transferring onto other track components. The survey data analysis suggests a small vertical settlement and negligible lateral movement of the turnout system. The static and dynamic behaviours of FFU bearers appear to equate that of natural timber but its service life is superior.

Direct Solution of Structural Rigid Frames with Sidesway (절점이동(節點移動)이 있는 구조강절(構造剛節) 뼈대의 직접해법(直接解法))

  • For the analysis of multistory frames with sidesway, no adequate procedures can be found in the classical methods of structural analysis. Even well-known procedures such as the slope-deflection method and the moment distribution method may not be effective tools since those methods require a multiple of computational labor and/or yield results of approximate values. In this study, a direct method is developed and proposed for the analysis of multistory frames with sidesway, which is due to the lateral loads, asymmetry of the structure itself, or asymmetry of vertical loadings. The proposed method is to obtain simple forms of equations derived by a mathematical formulation of the moment distribution procedure combined with successive correction concept. Numerical illustrations show that the results obtained by the proposed method agree well with those by rigorous ones. Undoubtedly, this newly developed method can be applied more easily for the analysis of structural frames without joint translation as well as continuous beams.
