In this study, three dimensional numerical analyses were carried out to predict axial (pullout and compressive) and lateral behavior of rock-socketed steel pipe pile varying diameter, wall thickness, and length. As a result of the pile pullout analyses, it was confirmed that the pullout displacement was inversely proportional to the pile diameter for given pile length, thickness, pullout load. Load-settlement relationship of the compressive pile analyses revealed that the effect of pile thickness on pile resistance was more significant than that of pile diameter. In addition, laterally loaded pile analyses showed that pile lateral resistance is influenced above all else by pile diameter. This study showed that it is necessary to conduct numerical analyses to identify the effects of pile diameter, wall thickness, and pile length on the steel pipe pile behavior as a preliminary pile design under specified loading conditions.

This paper presents full scale model tests on the various types of model piles carried out to estimate the behavior of laterally loaded steel-concrete composite piles. Subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the reaction of ground in laboratory condition. In addition, lateral behavior of piles under working load condition was estimated using composite loading system, which is available for independent loading in vertical and horizontal direction. Steel-concrete composite piles showed higher efficiency in lateral resistance rather than drilled shaft made of reinforced concrete. The lateral resistance of composite pile was larger than the summation of steel pile and concrete pile due to the composite effect by steel casing. The effect of shear key or strength of concrete on the behavior of composite pile was examined. The substitution of reinforcing bar by steel casing was also investigated.
In this study, we grasped the resistance state of the back ground which had a notable influence on computing the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile in the homogeneous ground by the model test. In order to grasp a resistance behavior, we have to know the deformation area of the back ground and the side failure angle other than the rotation point of pile and vertical failure angle of back ground which were proposed by Bae & Kim in 2008. We found out in this test the characteristics of the behavior of the back ground in accordance with the shape and size of the pile and ground density. We examined the interrelationship of the relative density of sand, the size and the sectional shape of the pile as well.
This paper presents the effect of pile diameter on the lateral behavior of offshore pile for wind turbine. The material parameters of the soils were estimated through SPT on the Southwestern offshore area in Korea, where the first wind farm is planned. The FDM software, FLAC3D, and LPile were adopted to derive the load-displacement curve, p-y curve, and maximum bending moment at a specified displacement. It was found that the results from softwares significantly differ and the LPile could overestimate the allowable capacity. The maximum bending moment along the pile with 2m diameter could be as large as four times the bending moment with 1m diameter. Similar trend was observed for the allowable lateral capacity.

The load distribution and deflection of large diameter piles are investigated by lateral load transfer method (p-y curve). The emphasis is on the effect of the soil continuity in a laterally loaded pile using 3D finite element analysis. A framework for determining a p-y curve is calculated based on the surrounding soil stress. The parametric studies that take into account the soil continuity are also presented in this paper. Through comparisons with results of field load tests, it is found that the prediction by the present approach is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements and thus, represents a significant improvement in the prediction of a laterally loaded pile behavior. Therefore, a present study considering the soil continuity would be more economical pile design.

In this thesis the model tests were performed to the horizontal pull-out characteristics of a suction pile subjected to a pull in sands. For this model tests, soil conditions ($D_r$=65), three pile diameters (D=100, 150, 200mm) and five loading points (h/L=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) were changed. And the experimental results were also compared with those by the theoretical methods. The results by the experimental and theoretical analysis are as follows. The ultimate horizontal pull-out resistance by the model test increased as the loading point (h/L) moved downwards from the pile top, and the maximum value reached at the h/L=0.75. The theoretical ultimate horizontal pull-out resistance by Broms(1964) and Hong(1984) agreed well with that by the model test at h/L=0 and 0.25, but their results overestimated the experimental result at lower part of pile and the differences between the theoretical and experimental results were of great. While the horizontal loading applied at the upper part of pile, the pile moved to the horizontal direction with rotating clockwise. As the loading point moved downwards from the pile top, the rotating angle of pile was smaller.
The pupose of the present paper is to estimate the effects of constraint condition of pile head, ground condition(dry unit weight. $\gamma_4$) and embedded pile lengths on the behavior of single pile which is embedded in normally consolidated clay. BBperiment functions can be quantified to these effects obtained from the results of model teats. The ground of model tests is normally consolidated( NC ) clay under three kinds of effective vertical stress. The results of the model tests using the steel pile of two different embedded pile length and of free-head and fired-head show that the lateral load-deflection relationship is to be elasto plastic behavior below $\gamma_d/\gamma_{dmax}$: 0.84 and that the reduction of lateral load of beyond maximum lateral load($Q_{max}$) at each model test is significantly time-dependent. In this study, it is shown that the displacement relationship can be fitted to exponential function of time by model best results. The effect of ground conditions on the ultimate and yield lateral load is fitted to exponential function including the ratio of dry unit weight to maximum dry unit weight. When tests by results are compared with those from Broms and Budhu et at., the predicted results are over-estimated about 27-87 ayo. In effectivity of constraint condition of pile head on the lateral load-deflection response, the $Q_{fixed}/Q_{gree}-y/D$ relationship is highly non-linear and fitted to parabolic function.
When a lateral load is applied to a short pile whose embedded depth is relatively smaller than its diameter, an overturning failure occurs. To investigate the behavior of laterally loaded short piles, several model tests in laboratory scales had been carried out, however the behavior of large moment carrying piles for electric poles, traffic sign and road lamp, etc. have not been revealed yet. This paper deals with the real-scale load tests for 750 mm diameter short piles. To simulate the actual loading condition, very large moment was mobilized by applying lateral loads to the location 8 m away from the pile head. Three load tests changing the pile embedded lengths to 2.0 m, 2.5 m, and 3.0 m were carried out. The test piles overturned abruptly with very small displacement and rotation before the failures. These brittle failures are in contrast with the ductile failures shown in the former model tests with the relatively smaller moment to lateral load ratio. Comparisons of the test results with three existing methods for the estimation of the ultimate lateral capacity show that the method assuming the rotation point at pile tip matches well when the embedded depth is small, however, as the embedded depth increases the other two methods assuming the inversion of soil pressure with respect to rotation points in pile length match better.
The analysis of laterally loaded piles is generally carried out by idealizing the soil mass as Winkler springs, which is a crude approximation; however this approach gives reasonable results for many practical applications. For more precise analysis, the three- dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is one of the best alternatives. The FEA uses the modulus of elasticity $E_s$ of soil, which can be determined in the laboratory by conducting suitable laboratory tests on undisturbed soil samples. Because of the different concepts and idealizations in these two approaches, the results are expected to vary significantly. In order to investigate this fact in detail, three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out using different combinations of soil and pile characteristics. The FE results related to the pile deflections are compared with the closed-form solutions in which the modulus of subgrade reaction $k_s$ is evaluated using the well-known $k_s-E_s$ relationship. In view of the observed discrepancy between the FE results and the closed-form solutions, an improved relationship between the modulus of subgrade reaction and the elastic constants is proposed, so that the solutions from the closed-form equations and the FEA can be closer to each other.

Piles are often subjected to both axial and lateral loads. The nonlinear subgrade reaction method is widely used for the design of laterally loaded piles and in this approach the soil reaction is replaced with a series of independent nonlinear Winkler springs. In this study, Laterally loaded high strength H-piles were analyzed using a finite difference solution, and three p-y curve models with different k values(the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction, [FL$\^$-3/]) were evaluated using data obtained from various field tests, and another analysis method using Q$\sub$g/ - y$\sub$g/ curve was developed. The results of this analysis were compared with the measured values to assess their applicability.
