  • Lateral thrust jet has better maneuverability performance than the control surface like the conventional fin for attitude control or orbital transition of guided weapons. However, in the supersonic region, a jet interaction flow occurs due to the lateral thrust jet during flight, and a complicated flow structure is exhibited by the interaction of the shock wave, boundary layer flow, and the vortex flow. Especially, hit-to-kill interceptors require precise control and maneuvering, so it is necessary to analyze the effect of jet interaction flow. Conventional jet interaction analyses were performed under low altitude conditions, but there are not many cases in the case of medium altitude condition, which has different flow characteristics. In this study, jet interaction flow analysis is performed on the lateral jet controlled interceptor operating at medium altitude. Based on the results, the structural characteristics of the flow field and the changes of aerodynamic coefficient are analyzed.

  • Staphylococcal enterotoxin is a very common cause of food poisoning. Conventional detection methods for the toxin including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), chemiluminescence (ECL), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays require a lot of time, efforts, and expert technicians. Lateral flow strip kits have shown great potential for the rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. The lateral flow strip kit is widely used in clinical settings because it is easy to use, fast, and cost effective. A typical lateral flow strip kit uses colloidal gold to generate a visual signal. However, the lateral flow strip kit based on colloidal gold has limited sensitivity to fulfill food safety regulation requirements. This study was performed to develop a rapid test kit for pathogenic staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) in food samples. The rapid detection kit was fabricated based on a nitrocellulose lateral-flow strip. Cellulose nano beads and SEB antibodies were used as the tag and receptor, respectively, to improve the detection performance. Manually spotted SEB antibody and anti-rabbit antibody on the surface of the nitrocellulose membrane were used as test and control spots, respectively. The feasibility of the rapid test kit to detect SEB in samples was evaluated. The sensitivity of the kit was 10 ng/mL SEB spiked in PBS. Additionally, the rapid test kit could detect 1 ng/mL of SEB in chicken meat extract.

  • The flow characteristics of reactor fuel assembly always intrigue the designers and the experimentalists among the myriad phenomena that occur simultaneously in a nuclear core. In this work, the visual experimental method has been developed on the basis of refraction index matching (RIM) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques to investigate the detailed flow characteristics in China fast reactor fuel subassembly. A 7-rod bundle of simulated fuel subassembly was fabricated for fine examination of flow characteristics in different subchannels. The experiments were performed at condition of Re=6500 (axial bulk velocity 1.6 m/s) and the fluid medium was maintained at 30℃ and 1.0 bar during operation. As for results, axial and lateral flow features were observed. It is shown that the spiral wire has an inhibitory effect on axial flow and significant intensity of lateral flow mixing effect is induced by the wire. The root mean square (RMS) of lateral velocity fluctuation was acquired after data processing, which indicates the strong turbulence characteristics in different flow subchannels.

  • Pile-supported embankment is one of the reinforcing methods to minimize damage due to the severe subsidence and lateral flow when soft clay ground is supported with embankment. pile-supported embankment mainly penetrates soft ground into the bearing stratum in order to support surcharge load which minimizes the subsidence and lateral flow due to the surcharge load. The aim of this research is to review quantitatively reinforcing effect of pile-supported embankment which is installed in soft clay ground. From the model test, it reproduced the ground movement with regard to the non-reinforced and reinforcing embankment-pile and also analyzed stabilizing effects of lateral flow due to the pile-supported embankment. With regard to the case of installing pile-supported embankment, its were analyzed stabilizing effects of lateral flow in cases of quick-load and slow-load to make different surcharge load.

  • It is well known all much information for evaluation on possibility of liquefaction and lateral flow for sand over the world. Recently, it is started to be known that liquefaction happens on non-plastic silt, too. But cyclic and post-cyclic characteristics for non-plastic silt is a few familiar to the world. Specially, it is not aware of the estimating method for lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The main purpose in this paper is to propose the evaluation for liquefaction and lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The method used in this research is that possibility for liquefaction on non-plastic silt was evaluated with cyclic direct simple shear test, and then residental strength was estimated with static shear test. Through the test results liquefaction on non-plastic silt is well not happened but strength decreases rapidly with increasing shear stress. With the proposed method it can be evaluated possibility of liquefaction and propose lateral flow.

  • In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have often been used, on a horizontally deforming ground, to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-Coulomb's plastic states occur in the ground, just around H-piles. In this study, some model experiments were performed to check the lateral forces determined from theoretical equations, using several pile widths, heights and various interval ratios between H-piles for sand specimens. The solution of the theoretical equation, derived from previous studies, showed reasonable characteristics for constants of soil, as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-Pile.

  • Recently, there have been many construction projects on soft ground with growth of industry and economy. Therefore foundation piles of abutments and(or) buildings had been suffering from a lot of stability problems of inordinary displacement due to lateral flow of soft ground. Although many researches about lateral flow have been carried out, it is still difficult to assess the mechanism of lateral flow in soft ground quantitatively. And reasonable design method for judgement of lateral flow occurrence in soft ground is not established yet. In this study, six PNN (Probabilistic Neural Network) models were developed according to input variables and database compiled from Korea and Japan for the judgment of lateral flow occurrence. PNN models were compared with present empirical methods. It was found that the developed PNN models can give more precise and reliable judgment of lateral flow occurrence than empirical methods.

  • Direct numerical simulation was carried out to study the vortical structures of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The cubic obstacle is situated in the entrance region of the channel flow where the boundary layers are developing. Upstream of the obstacle, steady and unsteady laminar horseshoe vortex systems are observed at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500, respectively; the near-wake flow is turbulent in both cases. The flow separates at each leading sharp edge of the cube, and subsequent vortex roll-up is noticed in the corresponding free-shear layer. The vortex shedding from the upper leading edge (upper vortices) and that from the two lateral leading edges (lateral vortices) are both quasi-periodic and their frequencies are computed. The upper and lateral vortices further develop into hairpin and Λ vortices, respectively. A series of instantaneous contours of the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor helps us identify spatial and temporal behaviors of the vortices in detail. The results indicate that the length and time scales of the vortical structures at Re=3,500 are much shorter than those at Re:1,000. Correlations between the upper and lateral vortices are also reported.
