It has been recognized that laser dicing of wafers results in low mechanical strength compared to the conventional sawing techniques. Thermal shock generated by rapid thermal loading is responsible for this problem. This work presents a two-dimensional ultra-short thermo elastic model for numerical simulation of femtosecond laser ablation of metals in the high-fluence regime where the phase explosion is dominant. Laser-induced thermoelastic stress is analyzed for Ni. The results show that the laser-induced thermal shock is large enough to induce mechanical damages.
Laser induced incandescence, LII, recently developed technique for measuring soot concentration in flames, can overcome most of limitations of conventional laser extinction measurement. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the effect of laser intensity, detection wavelength, and also laser beam quality on both LII signal at a particular position and peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio. The results of LII signal with increasing laser intensity shows its near-independence of laser intensity once threshold level of laser intensity has been reached. However, this near-independence depends on laser beam quality and the incident optical setup. The peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio slowly but continuously increases with laser power. This fact is due to the dependence of LII signal on particle mean diameter. LII signal is attenuated during it passes through the flame containing soot particles. The attenuation rate is inversely proportional to detection wavelength. In this study, LII signal at 680 nm band is 10% greater than the signal at 400 nm band.

Laser induced incandescence (LII) method is frequently used to measure soot volume fraction in flames. In this study, experiments were performed to measure soot volume fraction in coaxial diffusion flame using LII method and calibrated with laser scattering/extinction method. The effects of laser intensity (>$1{\times}10^8W/cm^2$), laser wavelength (532nm, 1064nm) and detection wavelength (400nm, 600nm) on the LII signal were investigated. On the range of $4{\times}10^8{\sim}8{\times}10^8W/cm^2$ there were no effects of laser intensity on LII signal. Except these ranges, LII signal was increased with laser intensity. For the long gate width, the LII signals of the higher laser intensity (>${\vartheta}(GW/cm^2)$) cases had better correlation with soot volume fraction which were measured by laser extinction method compared with lower laser intensity cases. The errors of 2-dimensional cases at the calibration height were approximately 50% regardless of laser wavelength.
The present study was designed to investigate the effect of low power GaAsAl laser on Fos expression in the spinal cord induced by noxious mechanical stimulation. Noxious mechanical stimulation was applied to the right hind paw following 30min of low power laser treatment using different intensity and treatment point and the resulting Fos expression in the spinal cord dorsal horn was compared to that obtained in rats exposed only to the noxious mechanical stimulation. The results were summarized as follows: 1. In intact control rats, only a few Fos like immunoreactive(Fos-IR) neurons were evident in the lumbar spinal cord dorsal horn. Similarly, following prolonged inhalation anesthesia, Fos-IR neurons were absent in the dorsal horn of the lumbar spinal cord. In animals treated with noxious mechanical stimulation, neurons with nuclei exhibiting Fos immunostaining were distributied mainly in the medial half of ipsilateral laminae I-V at lumbar segments L3-5. These findings directly indicated that prolonged anesthesia used in this study did not affect the Fos expression in the spinal cord dorsal horn of intact animals and noxious mechanical stimulation treated animals. 2. In acupoint treated animals, 10mW of laser stimulation, not 3mW intensity, significantly reduced the number of Fos immunoreactive neurons in the spinal dorsal horn induced by noxious mechanical stimulation(P<.01). However, the supressive effect of low power laser stimulatin was not observed in 3m Wand 10m W of laser stimulation into non-acupoint. These data indicate that 10mW of low power laser stimulation into acupoint is capable of inhibiting the expression of Fos in the dorsal horn induced by noxious mechanical stimulation. In conclusion, these findings raise the possibility that low power laser stimulation into acupoint may be a promising alternative medicine therapy for the mechanical stimulation induced pain in the clinical field.

A laser system and signal aquisition system to use a laser-induced fluorescence technique were arranged to measure NO concentration. To identify the NO fluorescence signal, verification of the fluorescence was performed through use of comparison of the signals taken both in a undoped and doped calibration flames. Finally, the spatial NO number densities in partially premixed flames were found as a function of fuel-tube equivalence ratio(${\phi}_c$) and overall equivalence ratio(${\phi}_o$).
The laser-induced transient grating method is applied to study the dynamics of the nematic MBBA film. The nanosecond laser pulses of 355 nm are used to make the transient grating and the cw He-Ne laser of 633 nm is used to probe the dynamics. Strong multiple order diffractions are observed at high nematic temperatures. The reordering process induced by the phototransformed state, which is the locally melted state from the nematic sample, is attributed to the main origin of the multiple order diffractions from the nematic MBBA. The characteristics of the multiple order gratings are discussed with the grating profiles simulated from the multiple diffraction signals.

Background and Objectives A picosecond-domain laser treatment using a microlens array (MLA) or a diffractive optical element elicits therapeutic micro-injury zones in the skin. This study examined the patterns of tissue reactions after delivering multiple pulses of 1,064-nm, MLA-type, picosecond neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser treatment. Materials and Methods Multiple pulses of picosecond laser treatment were delivered to ex vivo human or brown micropig skin and analyzed histopathologically. A high-speed cinematographic study was performed to visualize the multiple pulses of picosecond laser energy-induced skin reactions in in vivo human skin. Results In the ex vivo human skin, a picosecond laser treatment at a fluence of 0.3 J/cm2 over 100 non-stacking passes generated multiple lesions of thermally-initiated laser-induced optical breakdown (TI-LIOB) in the epidermis and dermis. In the ex vivo micropig skin, stacking pulses of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 at a fluence of 0.3 J/cm2 generated distinct round to oval zones of tissue coagulation in the mid to lower dermis. High-speed cinematography captured various patterns of twinkling, micro-spot reactions on the skin surface over 100 stacked pulses of a picosecond laser treatment. Conclusion Multiple pulses of 1,064-nm, MLA-type, picosecond laser treatment elicit marked TI-LIOB reactions in the epidermis and areas of round to oval thermal coagulation in the mid to deep dermis.
Laser induced surface activation (LISA) technology requires refined selection of process variables to fabricate conductive microcircuits on a general polymer material. Among the process variables, laser mode is one of the crucial factors to make a reliable conductor pattern. Here we compare the continuous wave (CW) laser mode with the pulse wave (PW) laser mode through determination of the surface roughness and circuit accuracy. In the CW laser mode, the surface roughness is pronounced during the implementation of the conductive circuit, which results in uneven plating. In the PW laser mode, the surface is relatively smooth and uniform, and the formed conductive circuit layer has few defects with excellent adhesion to the polymer material. As a result of a change of laser mode from CW to PW, the value of Ra of the polymer material decreases from 0.6 ㎛ to 0.2 ㎛; the value of Ra after the plating process decreases from 0.8 ㎛ to 0.4 ㎛, and a tight bonding force between the polymer source material and the conductive copper plating layer is achieved. In conclusion, this study shows that the PW laser process yields an excellent conductive circuit on a polymeric material.
Several visualization techniques of laser diagnostics are presented for combustion phenomena, including Mie scattering for flow, Rayleigh and Raman scattering spectroscopy for major species, laser-induced fluorescence for minor species, and laser-induced incandescence for soot. These techniques have been applied to understand the various combustion phenomena more clearly, including buoyancy-dominant flow system, diffusion flam oscillation, laminar and turbulent lifted flames, flame propagation along a vortex ring, and soot zone characteristics. The usefulness of laser diagnostics on a better understanding of physical mechanism is demonstrated.
