  • The limitations of high-power electrical lasers due to heating of the gas and the instability of the glow discharge can be alleviated by the flow of the lasing medium. In order to achieve high power and efficient laser, we are developing a fast-axial flow CO2 laser. We describe here the classification of gas-discharge CO2 lasers according to the cooling methods of the lasing medium and the design features of the fast-axial flow CO2 laser.

  • Silicon Nitride $(Si_3N_4)$, which is widely used in a variety of applications, is hard-to-machine due to its high hardness. At high temperature (e.g. above $1000^{\circ}C)$, however, the machinability can be greatly improved. In this work, we used a $CO_2$ laser with a high absorptivity to $Si_3N_4$ of 0.9 to locally heat the surface of a rotating $Si_3N_4$ rod on a lathe. In order to examine the effects of the laser-assisted heating on hardness, an $Si_3N_4$ rod is heated to temperatures from 900 to $1800^{\circ}C$ and is rotated at speeds from 440-900 rpm in experiments. When the rod is naturally cooled to room temperature, we measured the Vickers hardness (Hv); and observed the surface of HAZ using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used for ingredient analysis. Results showed that when heated at $1600^{\circ}C$, the hardness of $Si_3N_4$ decreased from 1500 Hv to 1000 Hv. Also, in order to predict the depth of HAZ, we numerically analyzed the laser-assisted heating of $Si_3N_4$.

  • We present a novel and simple method to enable spatially selective $ZnAl_2O_4$ nanocrystal formation on the surface of $B_2O_3$-$Al_2O_3$-ZnO-CaO-$K_2O$ glass by employing localized laser heating. Optimized precipitation of glass-ceramics containing nanocrystals doped with $Eu^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ions was performed by controlling $CO_2$ laser power and scan speed. Micro-x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the mean size and morphology of nanocrystals, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed the lateral distribution of elements in the imaged area. Laser power and scan speed controled annealing temperature for crystalization in the range of 1.4-1.8 W and 0.01-0.3 mm/s, and changed the size of nanocrystals and distribution of dopant ions. We also report more than 20 times enhanced downshift visible emission under ultraviolet excitation, and 3 times increased upconversion emission from $Eu^{3+}$ ions assisted by efficient sensitizer $Yb^{3+}$ ions in nanocrystals under 980 nm excitation. The confocal microscope revealed the depth profile of $Eu^{3+}$ ions by showing their emission intensity variation.

  • This paper presents a study on heat transfer and residual distortion analysis of laser welded EDFA(Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) LD(Laser Diode) Pump using the finite element method. In the production process of LD Pump in light-wave communication system, ferrule and saddle are welded by Nd-YAG laser. These parts experience thermal and mechanical effect during heating and cooling cycle with the laser welding. Thus distortion happens in the laser-welded packaging, and it makes an error in detecting the light signal translate through optical fiber in LD Pump. The amount of final displacement produced by the laser welding is predicted using the finite element method. And the optimal shape of saddle is proposed with the results of numerical analyses to minimize the displacement.

  • Gas heating, high frequency induction heating and laser heating can be used as the heat-source of line heating. Most of shipyards have been using the gas heating method for line heating. It is difficult to control the residual deformation of gas heating. High frequency induction heating is more feasible for the automation of line heating rather than the gas heating method since it is easy to control the magnitude of heat input. In this study, a numerical model of high frequency induction heating process is proposed for the application of the line heating. The simulation process of the induction heating is composed of the electromagnetic analysis, the heat transfer analysis, and the thermal deformation analysis.

  • In this paper, the principles, characteristics and recent studies of the laser micro soldering are reviewed. The factors which influence laser micro welding and soldering are also included. Laser soldering is a non-contact process that transfers energy to solder joint by a precisely controlled laser beam. In recent electronics industry, the demands for laser soldering are increasing due to bonding for complex circuits and local heating in micro-joint. In laser soldering, there are several important factors like laser absorption, laser power, laser scanning speed, and etc, which affect laser solderability. The laser absorption ratio depends on materials, and each material has different absorption or reflectivity for the laser beam, which requires fine adjustment of the laser beam. Laser types and operating conditions are also important factors for laser soldering performance, and these are also reviewed.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of optimal surface heating patterns that result in focusing acoustic energy inside a subsurface target volume at a specified target time. The surface of the solid is heated by an incident laser beam which gives rise to shear and compressional waves propagating into the solid. The optimal heating design process aims to achieve the desired energy focusing at the target with minimal laser power densities and minimal system disturbance away from the target. The optimality conditions are secured via the conjugated gradient method and by the finite element method along with using the half-space Green's function matrix. Good quality energy focusing is achived with the optimal designs reflecting the high directivity of the photothermally generated shear wave patterns.

  • In this paper, the principles, types and characteristics of the laser and laser soldering are introduced. Laser soldering methods for electronics, metals, semiconductors are also presented. Demands for laser soldering are increasing due to bonding for complex circuits and local heating in micro joint. Laser absorption ratio depends on materials, and each material has different absorption or reflectivity of the laser beam, which requires fine adjustment of the laser beam. Laser types and operating conditions are also important factors for laser soldering performance. In this paper, the performance of Nd:YAG laser soldering is compared to the hot blast reflow. Meanwhile, a diode laser gives different wavelength and smaller parts with high performance, but it has various reliability issues such as heat loss, high power, and cooling technology. These issues need to be improved in the future, and further studies for laser micro-joining and soldering are required.
