  • Recent developments in Smart Structures with very large scale embedded sensors and actuators have introduced new challenges in terms of data processing and sensor fusion. These smart structures are dynamically classified as a large-scale system with thousands of sensors and actuators that form the musculoskeletal of the structure, analogous to human body. In order to develop structural health monitoring and diagnostics with data provided by thousands of sensors, new sensor informatics has to be developed. The focus of our on-going research is to develop techniques and algorithms that would utilize this musculoskeletal system effectively; thus creating the intelligence for such a large-scale autonomous structure. To achieve this level of intelligence, three major research tasks are being conducted: development of a Bio-Inspired data analysis and information extraction from thousands of sensors; development of an analytical technique for Optimal Sensory System using Structural Observability; and creation of a bio-inspired decision-making and control system. This paper is focused on the results of our effort on the first task, namely development of a Neuro-Morphic Engineering approach, using a neuro-symbolic data manipulation, inspired by the understanding of human information processing architecture, for sensor fusion and structural diagnostics.

  • Recently, the Korean government announced a plan to activate renewable energies, with focus on clean energy sources such as solar and wind power as the core and the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Unlike other photovoltaic (PV) systems, offshore PV installations are advantageous for large-scale expansion because of the ease of securing sites; they also enable lowering the power generation costs based on construction of large-scale power facilities of megawatt class or higher owing to low noise and landscape damage. However, any power generation should proceed with consideration of the special environmental conditions of the ocean. Above all, when installing large-scale facilities, it is important to reduce fluctuations of the structure and secure stability to actively respond to waves. This study is concerned with the development of a floating body technology that actively responds to waves so as to enable commercialization of offshore solar power. A unit platform for research and development on offshore PV generation was installed in the Saemangeum sea, and the structural fluctuations and stability were analyzed to ensure conformity with the major performance indicators.

  • The field of land surveying is changing dramatically due to the way data is processed, analyzed and presented. Also, there is a growing demand for digital spatial information, coming primarily from the GIS (Geographical Information System) user community. Such a demand has created a strong development potential for a new land surveying software. An overview of the development and capabilities of a land surveying software platform based on the Windows system, SurveyingMap, is presented. Among its many features, SurveyingMap provides a lot of adaptability for networks adjustment, geodetic and plane coordinates transformation, contouring, sectioning, DTM (Digital Terrain Model) generation, and large scale mapping applications. The system output is compatible with well known computer aided drafting (CAD) /GIS packages to expand its scope of applications. SurveyingMap is also suitable for non-technical users due to the user-friendly graphic user interface. The system could be used in engineering, architecture, GIS, and academic teaching and research, among other fields. Two applications of SurveyingMap, extension of field control and large scale mapping, for the case study area are established. The results demonstrate that the system is adaptable and reasonably priced for use by college and university students.

  • This study proposes a distributed parallel processing system, called the Fast Analysis System for remote sensing daTa(FAST), for large-scale satellite image processing and analysis. FAST is a system that designs jobs in vertices and sequences, and distributes and processes them simultaneously. FAST manages data based on the Hadoop Distributed File System, controls entire jobs based on Apache Spark, and performs tasks in parallel in multiple slave nodes based on a docker container design. FAST enables the high-performance processing of progressively accumulated large-volume satellite images. Because the unit task is performed based on Docker, it is possible to reuse existing source codes for designing and implementing unit tasks. Additionally, the system is robust against software/hardware faults. To prove the capability of the proposed system, we performed an experiment to generate the original satellite images as ortho-images, which is a pre-processing step for all image analyses. In the experiment, when FAST was configured with eight slave nodes, it was found that the processing of a satellite image took less than 30 sec. Through these results, we proved the suitability and practical applicability of the FAST design.

  • The engagement control software embedded in the weapon control computer of the fire control center for air defense missile system is large-scale real-time software. The use of typical software development methodologies is not appropriate to develop such large-scale embedded software in terms of reusability, reliability, and productivity for the reason that it is significantly complicated, and highly dependent on hardware platforms and developers. In this paper, a model-based software architecture using components based on UML 2.0 for the engagement control software is presented in order to solve these problems. This software architecture is verified using the black-box test, the scenario-based test, and the Ethernet packet monitoring test methods. The results demonstrate that the developed software architecture can be employed to enhance reusability, maintainability, and productivity of large-scale embedded software.

  • The Purpose of this study is to predict farm size per farming household in Chungcheongnam-province by using the Markov chains and Quadratic Programming.. The results are as follows; First, small-scale farms with less than 1.0ha of land are predicted to be still more than half (of total farming households) in 2025 as well. Second, large-scale farms with 3.0ha-5.0ha land and extra large-scale farms with over 5.0ha of land are predicted to gradually expand their proportion in total farm scale. Third, middle-scale farms with 1.0ha-3.0ha land are forecasted to be reduced in their relative proportion. It is required to take into account regional characteristics to improve the effectiveness of a rice industry policy. Therefore, this study has some significance in attempting to research on the ownership structure of rice production areas in consideration of target regions.

  • It has been issued to fabricate nano-scale patterns with large-scale in the field of digital display. Also, large-scale fabrication technology of nano pattern is very important not only for the field of digital display but also for the most of applications of the nano-scale patterns in the view of the productivity. Among the fabrication technologies, UV nano imprinting process is suitable for replicating polymeric nano-scale patterns. However, in case of conventional UV nano imprinting process using flat mold, it is not easy to replicate large areal nano patterns. Because there are several problems such as releasing, uniformity of the replica, mold fabrication and so on. In this study, to overcome the limitation of the conventional UV nano imprinting process, we proposed a continuous UV nano imprinting process using a pattern roll stamper. A pattern roll stamper that has nano-scale patterns was fabricated by attaching thin metal stamper to a roll base. A continuous UV nano imprinting system was designed and constructed. As practical examples of the process, various nano patterns with pattern size of 500, 150 and 50nm were fabricated. Finally, geometrical properties of imprinted nano patterns were measured and analyzed.

  • Global efforts continue with the goal of transition to a "carbon neutral (net zero)" society with zero carbon emissions by 2050. For this purpose, the technology of water electrolysis is being developed, which can store electricity generated from renewable energies in large quantities and over a long period of time as hydrogen. Recently, various research and large-scale projects on 'green hydrogen', which has no carbon emissions, are being conducted. In this paper, a comparison of water electrolysis technologies was carried out and, based on data provided by the International Energy Agency (IEA), large-scale water electrolysis demonstration projects were analyzed by classifying them by technology, power supply, country and end user. It is expected that through the analysis of large-scale water electrolysis demonstration projects, research directions and road maps can be provided for the development/implementation of commercial projects in the future.

  • During the last few decades in Korea, the development of hillside or mountain areas has rapidly increased for infrastructure construction such as railroads, highways and housing. Many landslides have occurred during these constructions. Also, the amount and scale of damage caused by landslides have increased every year. In the case of Far East Asia including Korea, the damage of landslides is consequently reported during the wet season. In this paper, the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stability is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements in the large-scale cut slopes. In particular a large-scale cut slope situated on the construction site for the express highway in Donghae, Korea. First of all, The behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface indicating that the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be predicted. On the basis of being able to predict the depth of the sliding surface, stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To ensure the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. The maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head and it is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.
