  • Substation facilities have become large and complex in the electric power systems. Development of condition monitoring and diagnosis techniques have been very important to improve the security of substation transformers. This paper presents a method to analyze the cause and the degree of aging of power transformers by Self organizing map(SOM). Dissolved gas data were non-linearly transformed by sigmoid function to make determination of SOM close to that of human. Potential of a failure and the degree of aging of a normal transformer are identified by using the proposed quantitative criterion. Furthermore, transformer aging is monitored by the proposed criterion for a set of transformers. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed method, a case study is performed and its results are presented.

  • During magnetic inrush or over-excitation, saturation of the core in a transformer draws a large exciting current, which can cause mal-operation of a differential relay. This paper proposes a modified current differential relay for transformer protection. The relay calculates core-loss current from the induced voltage and the core-loss resistance; the relay calculates the magnetizing current from the core flux and the magnetization curve. Finally, the relay obtains the modified differential current by subtracting the core-loss and the magnetizing currents from the conventional differential current. Comparison study with the conventional differential relay with harmonic blocking is also shown. The proposed technique not only discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault, but also improves the speed of the conventional relay.

  • The current flowing though a power line is measured by a current transformer (CT). Since a CT is a kind of transformer, saturation of magnetic flux in the core may occur when a large primary current flows. This saturation makes the secondary current of a CT distorted and causes problems in the protection point of view. Because of the current distortion, a protection relay cannot collect the correct information showing how the primary power system changed. Consequently, the current distortion may cause the mal-operation or operation time delay of protective relay. In this paper, an algorithm based on AR model and LSQ is proposed to compensate the saturated CT secondary currents. Various test results indicate that the proposed algorithm can accurately compensate a severely distorted secondary current and is not affected by remanence.

  • A non-contact battery charger which transfers energy using magnetic field without any electrical contacts is designed using half-bridge series resonant converter. This converter utilizes series resonance to reduce the undesirable effect of large leakage inductance of the non-contact transformer and ZVS operation can reduce switching losses. In this paper. analysis and design procedure of half-bridge series resonant converter with non-contact transformer is presented. Input voltage is 85VAC ${\sim}$ 270VAC, output voltage and current is 4.1V and 800mA, respectively. Furthermore, a method for calculating the secondary current of the transformer to control battery charging current in constant current charging mode which is required for litium-ion battery is proposed and the performance is verified from experiments.

  • When large penetration of the distributed generators (DGs) such as photovoltaic (PV) systems is growing up in grid system, it is important to quickly prevent islanding caused by power system fault to ensure electrical safety. We propose a novel active method for islanding prevention by harmonic injection synchronized with the exciting current harmonics of the pole transformer to avoid mutual interference between active signals. We confirm the validity of the proposed method by performing the basic tests of islanding by using a current source superimposed the harmonic active signal. Further, we carry out the simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC, and verify the fast islanding detection.

  • This paper presents a screening technique for greatly reducing the computation involved in determining the optimal location and types of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices in a large power system. The first-order sensitivities of the generation cost for various FACTS devices are derived. This technique requires solving only one optimal power flow (OPF) to obtain sensitivities with respect to FACTS device control variables for every transmission line To implement a sensitivity-based screening technique, we used a new UPFC model, which consists of an ideal transformer with a complex turns ratio and a variable shunt admittance. A S-bus system based on the IEEE 14-bus system was used to illustrate the technique.

  • A conventional parallel hybrid active filter has an inherent problem of large current ratings of devices used in inverter. In general, this problem has been solved by adjusting turn ratio of a matching transformer. However, making the transformer with high turn ratio may be not available for high power system due to its requirement for high voltage insulation. In this paper, a new configuration is proposed for parallel hybrid active filter. In the proposed hybrid active filter, the active filter is connected to the passive filter inductor in parallel through a matching transformer for the aim of reducing the size of inverter. Through computer simulations, we have shown the outstanding performances of the proposed topology.

  • This paper describes developement of on-line system for vibration signal analysis. In the power system, the main reason of transformer fault is due to a large amount of current by a short-circuit and a ground-fault. The electromagnetic force caused by fault-current deforms transformer windings and results in vibration pattern change. Therefore if the continuous on-line vibration monitoring on transformer is performed, an incipient failure can be detected. The developed system is composed of data acquisition devices, user interface program, signal processing program, diagnosis and trend analysis program, self diagnosis program and communication program.

  • Protective relay for transformer operates in general by comparing with the differential current and the restraint current. These kinds of currents are changed on magnitude and phasor during the fault according to winding type and vector group. This paper presents the differential and restraint currents and operational principle of differential protective relay for two-winding and three-winding transformer with graphical mode. It is developed using MATLAB for and educational purpose on engineer related in power system and protection in university and power utility including large factory.
