In order to solve the traffic congest and environmental issues, small-cross section tunnel for small car only is increasing, but there is not standard for installation of disaster prevention facility. In this study, in order to investigate the behavioral characteristics of thermal environment and smoke in a small cross section tunnels with a large port exhaust ventilation system, the A86, the U-Smartway and the Seobu moterawy tunnel, Temperature and CO concentration in case of fire according to cross sectional area, heat release rate and exhaust air flow rate were analyzed by numerical analysis and the results were as follows. As the cross-sectional area of the tunnel decreases, the temperature of the fire zone increases and the rate of temperature rise is not significantly affected by heat release rate. However, there is a difference depending on the change of the exhaust air flow rate. In the case of applying the exhaust air flow rate $Q_3+2.5Ar$ of the large port exhaust ventilation system, the temperature of the fire zone was 7.1 times for A86 ($Ar=25.3m^2$) and 5.4 time for U-smartway ($Ar=37.32m^2$) by Seobu moterway tunnel ($Ar=46.67m^2$). The CO concentration of fire zone also showed the same tendency. The A86 tunnels were 10.7 times and the U-Smartways were 9.5 times more than the Seobu moterway. Therefore, in the case of a small section tunnel, the thermal environment and noxious gas concentration due to the reduction of the cross-sectional area are expected to increase significantly more than the cross-sectional reduction rate.
A novel three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) forced vibration system has been developed for identification of aeroelastic (self-excited) load parameters used in time-domain response analysis of wind-excited flexible structures. This system is capable of forcing sinusoidal motions on a section model of a structure that is used in wind tunnel aeroelastic studies along all three degrees of freedom - along-wind, cross-wind, and torsional - simultaneously or in any combination thereof. It utilizes three linear actuators to force vibrations at a consistent frequency but varying amplitudes between the three. This system was designed to identify all the parameters, namely, aeroelastic- damping and stiffness that appear in self-excited (motion-dependent) load formulation either in time-domain (rational functions) or frequency-domain (flutter derivatives). Relatively large displacements (at low frequencies) can be generated by the system, if required. Results from three experiments, airfoil, streamlined bridge deck and a bluff-shaped bridge deck, are presented to demonstrate the functionality and robustness of the system and its applicability to multiple cross-section types. The system will allow routine identification of aeroelastic parameters through wind tunnel tests that can be used to predict response of flexible structures in extreme and transient wind conditions.
In order to study the mechanical behavior of shield tunnel segments during assembly stage, the in-situ tests and FDM numerical simulation were conducted based on the Foguan Shiziyang Tunnel with large cross-section. Analysis for the load state of the assembling segments in different assembly steps as well as the investigation for the changing of inner forces and longitudinal stress of segments with assembling steps were carried out in this paper. By comparing the tested results with the simulated results, the conclusions and suggestions could be drawn as follows: (1) It is the most significant for the effects on axial force and bending moment caused by the assembly of adjacent segment, followed by the insertion of key segment while the effects in the other assembly steps are relative smaller. With the increasing value of axial force, the negative bending moment turns into positive and remains increasing in most monitored sections, while the bending moment of segment B1and B6 are negative and keeping increasing; (2) The closer the monitored section to the adjacent segments or the key segment, the more significant the internal forces response, and the monitored effects of key segment insertion are more obvious than that of calculation; (3) The axial forces are all in compression during assembling and the monitored values are about 1.5~1.75 times larger than the calculated values, and the monitored values of bending moment are about 2 times the numerical calculation. The bending moment is more sensitive to the segments assembly process compared with axial force, and it will result in the large bending moment of segments during assembling when the construction parameters are not suitable or the assembly error is too large. However, the internal forces in assembly stage are less than those in normal service stage; (4) The distribution of longitudinal stress has strong influence on the changing of the internal forces. The segment side surface and intrados in the middle of two adjacent jacks are the crack-sensitive positions in the early assembly stage, and subsequently segment corners far away from the jacks become the crack-sensitive parts either.
Double deck tunnels are considered to have a large demand in a near future for solving traffic congestion problems and overcoming the limitations in constructing new tunnels. This study presents a numerical investigation using finite element (FE) analysis on the behaviors of the tunnels and the stability of pillars in a divergence section where single tunnel is diverged from a main line double deck tunnel. The effects of the separation distance between the diverged and the main tunnels and the ground condition were examined through the FE analysis by varying the separation distance from 0.1D to 2.0D (D: diameter of main tunnel) and the rock class from class I to V, respectively, and the analysis results were compared with those using empirical methods, strength-stress ratio, and the volume of interference. The FE analysis results indicated that the separation distance has a larger effect on tunnel behaviors, compared with the rock strength, and a single tunnel with a large cross section is more favorable than two separated tunnels for tunnel stability when the separation distance is below 0.7D.

An analysis refinement of the Messina Strait suspension bridge project has been recently required, concerning mainly the yaw angle effects on the multi-box deck section aerodynamics and the vortex shedding at low reduced velocities $V^*$. In particular the possible interaction of the axial flow with the large cross beams has been investigated. An original test rig has been designed at this purpose allowing for both forced motion and free motion aero elastic tests, varying the average angle of attack ${\alpha}$ and the deck yaw angle ${\beta}$. The hydraulic driven test rig allowed for both dynamic and stationary tests so that both the stationary coefficients and the flutter derivatives have been evaluated for each yaw angle. Specific free motion tests, taking advantage from the aeroelastic features of the section model, allowed also the study of the vortex shedding induced phenomena.

Large amplitude oscillation of steepled main cables usually presents during construction of a long-span bridge. To study this phenomenon, six typical main cables with different cross sections during construction are investigated. Two main foci have been conducted. Firstly, aerodynamic coefficients of a main cable are obtained and compared through simulation and wind tunnel test: (1) to ensure the simulation accuracy, influences of the numerical model's grid size, and the jaggy edges of main cable's cross section on main cable's aerodynamic coefficients are investigated; (2) aerodynamic coefficients of main cables at different wind attack angles are obtained based on the wind tunnel test in which the experimental model is made by rigid plastic using the 3D Printing Technology; (3) then numerical results are compared with wind tunnel test results, and they are in good agreement. Secondly, aerodynamic coefficients of the six main cables at different wind attack angles are obtained through numerical simulation. Then Den Hartog criterion is used to analyze the transverse galloping of main cables during construction. Results show all the six main cables may undergo galloping, which may be an important reason for the large amplitude oscillation of steepled main cables during construction. The flow structures around the main cables indicate that the characteristic of the airflow trajectory over a steepled main cable may play an important role in the galloping generation. Engineers should take some effective measures to control this harmful phenomenon due to the big possibility of the onset of galloping during the construction period.
High-speed trains have been developed widely in many countries in order to transport large quantity of people and commodities rapidly. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, aerodynamic resistance is generated suddenly. The resistance caused from air pressure induces micro pressure wave and discomfort to passengers in a train. Therefore, a pressure relief system should be installed in a tunnel to reduce the resistance acting against the running train in a tunnel. Additionally, the shape of a grain should be streamlined in order to reduce aerodynamic resistance caused by a high-speed train. The cross-section of a tunnel also should be carefully designed to reduce discomfort of passengers. This study represents the effect of pressure relief ducts installed between two running tunnels. The pressure relief duct was integrated with a cross-passage in order to save cost and construction time. One-dimensional network numerical simulations were carried out in order to estimate the effect of pressure relief systems.

In order to cope with ever growing traffic flow and complexity in the urban area, construction demands for expanding and realigning of existing urban roads and massive development of underground space within the urban area are in its increasing trend, it is fact that, mainly due to lack of statistical data accumulation through real construction, technology and construction practice to support such demands can hardly be said to have been established enough and leave many things still to be developed. These circumstances therefore came to motivate me to get into a study for a particular subject of "Design Basics for Closely Neighbored Twin Tunnel" among others, and also to put forward subjects required to be further studied in this connection in the future as follows: 1) To make a new economical design model for closely neighbored twin tunnel not only to make a drain for center perfect but also a tunnel construction safe. 2) Further efforts should be exerted for establishment of general standards for design and construction of various types of large cross-section tunnels including Twin structure.

Recently, due to the efforts to mitigate traffic congestion and expansion of space efficiency, the construction of underground roads has been increased in big-scale cities. Since tunnels in the city have a higher chance for a fire leading to a great tragedy during a severe traffic jam than mountain tunnels, it is highly likely that it will be constructed as a tunnel, having a small cross section, for small vehicles. However, if they are constructed as such small-vehicle tunnels, it would be possible to reduce the design fire intensity while the concentration of harmful gases would increase due to a reduction in the small cross sectional area, led by a decrease in the tunnel height. In this study, behaviors of fire smoke by the installation interval and format of large-scale exhaust-gas ports were examined and compared in the analysis of temperatures and CO concentrations of a tunnel and its results were as the following. Although there were no significant differences in the smoke spreading distance between installation intervals, but in this study, 100 m was found to be the most effective installation interval. The smoke exhaustion performance was found to be excellent in the order of $4m{\times}3m$, $6m{\times}2m$, and $3m{\times}2m$ (2 lane) of the smoke spreading distance. Although there was no significant difference in the smoke spreading distance between formats of large-scale exhaust-gas ports, it was found that the smoke spreading distance was larger than other cases when it was $3m{\times}2m$ in the fire growing process. The analysis of smoke spreading distances by the aspect ratio showed that a smoke spreading distance was shorted when its the smoke spreading distance was found to be shorter when its traverse distance was relatively longer than its longitudinal distance.

Tunnels have become an indispensable part of metro cities. Blast resistance design of tunnel has attracted the attention of researchers due to numerous implosion event. Present paper deals with the non-linear finite element analysis of rock tunnel having shear zone subjected to internal blast loading. Abaqus Explicit schemes in finite element has been used for the simulation of internal blast event. Structural discontinuity i.e., shear zone has been assumed passing the tunnel cross-section in the vertical direction and consist of Highly Weathered Granite medium surrounding the tunnel. Mohr-Coulomb constitutive material model has been considered for modelling the Highly Weathered Granite and the shear zone material. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP), Johnson-Cook (J-C), Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state models are used for concrete, steel reinforcement and Trinitrotoluene (TNT) simulation respectively. The Coupled-Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method of modelling for TNT explosive and air inside the tunnel has been adopted in this study. The CEL method incorporates the large deformations for which the traditional finite element analysis cannot be used. Shear zone orientations of 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°, with respect to the tunnel axis are considered to see their effect. It has been concluded that 60° orientation of shear zone presents the most critical situation.
