Advanced mobile communication devices require a bright, high information content display in a small, light-weight, low power consumption package. For portable applications flexible (or conformable) and rugged displays will be the future. In this paper we outline our progress towards developing such a low power consumption active-matrix flexible OLED $(FOLED^{TM})$ display. We demonstrate full color 100 ppi QVGA active matrix OLED displays on flexible stainless steel substrates. Our work in this area is focused on integrating three critical enabling technologies. The first technology component is based on UDC's high efficiency long-lived phosphorescent OLED $(PHOLED^{TM})$ device technology, which has now been commercially demonstrated as meeting the low power consumption performance requirements for mobile display applications. Secondly, is the development of flexible active-matrix backplanes, and for this our team are employing PARC's Excimer Laser Annealed (ELA) poly-Si TFTs formed on metal foil substrates as this approach represents an attractive alternative to fabricating poly-Si TFTs on plastic for the realization of first generation flexible active matrix OLED displays. Unlike most plastics, metal foil substrates can withstand a large thermal load and do not require a moisture and oxygen permeation barrier. Thirdly, the key to reliable operation is to ensure that the organic materials are fully encapsulated in a package designed for repetitive flexing, and in this device we employ a multilayer thin film Barix encapsulation technology in collaboration with Vitex systems. Drive electronics and mechanical packaging are provided by L3 Displays.
We prepared a flexible and transparent CuO/Cu/CuO multilayer electrodes on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using a specially designed roll-to-roll sputtering system at room temperature for GFF-type touch screen panels (TSPs). By the continuous roll-to-roll sputtering of the CuO and Cu layer, we fabricated a flexible CuO(150nm)/Cu(150nm)/CuO(150nm) multilayer electrodes with a sheet resistance of $0.289{\Omega}/square$, resistivity of $5.991{\times}10^{-23}{\Omega}-cm$, at the optimized condition without breaking the vacuum. To investigate the feasibility of the CuO/Cu/CuO multilayer as a transparent electrode for GFF-type TSPs, we fabricated simple GFF-type TSPs using the diamond patterned CuO/Cu/CuO electrode on PET substrate as function of mesh line width. Using diamond patterned CuO/Cu/CuO electrode of mesh line $5{\mu}m$ with sheet resistance of 38 Ohm/square, optical transmittance of 90% at 550 nm and an average transmittance of 89% at wavelength range from 380 to 780 nm, we successfully demonstrated GFF-type touch panel screens (TPSs). The successful operation of GFF-type TPSs with CuO/Cu/CuO multilayer electrodes indicates that the CuO/Cu/CuO multilayer is a promising transparent electrode for large-area capacitive-type TPSs due to its low sheet resistance and high transparency.
In recent years, electrochemical supercapacitors have attracted much attention due to their high power density, long life cycles, and high efficiency. Some supercapacitors using CNTs have been reported, but there are several issues to be resolved for further development of CNT based supercapacitors. One issue is time consuming procedures to prepare CNT films, which may provide poor control of CNT uniformity over the large area of the substrates. Another is new electrolytes replacing the conventional liquid electrolytes in supercapacitors. In this work, We have successfully demonstrated that spray deposition method of multiwalled CNT films using gel electroytes could be promising for CNT-based supercapacitors on ITO substrates. Specific capacitances using gel electrolyte reached up to 1.5 F/g and 9 mF/$cm^2$, and internal resistance was 28 ${\Omega}$. Specific capacitances and internal resistance of supercapacitors with gel electrolyte were better than or comparable to those with liquid electrolytes($KNO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$), indicating that gel electrolytes could replace liquid counterparts in CNT-based supercapacitors. Combined with gel electrolyte, spray deposition method could provide low cost and easily scalable process for high performance supercapacitors using CNT films on ITO for applications in display devices.

Atomically-thin 2D nanomaterials can be easily deformed and have surface corrugations which can influence the frictional characteristics of the 2D nanomaterials. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene can be grown in a wafer scale, which is suitable as a large-area surface coating film. The CVD growth involves cooling process to room temperature, and the thermal expansion coefficients mismatch between graphene and the metallic substrate induces a compressive strain in graphene, resulting in the surface corrugations such as wrinkles and atomic ripples. Such corrugations can induce the friction anisotropy of graphene, and therefore, accurate imaging of the surface corrugation is significant for better understanding about the friction anisotropy of CVD graphene. In this work, the combinatorial analysis using friction force microscopy (FFM) and transverse shear microscopy (TSM) was implemented to unveil the friction anisotropy of CVD bi-layer graphene. The periodic friction anisotropy of the wrinkles was measured following a sinusoidal curve depending on the angles between the wrinkles and the scanning tip, and the two domains were observed to have the different friction signals due to the different directions of the atomic ripples, which was confirmed by the high-resolution FFM and TSM imaging. In addition, we revealed that the atomic ripples can be easily suppressed by ironing the surface during AFM scans with an appropriate normal force. This work demonstrates that the friction anisotropy of CVD bilayer graphene is well-correlated with the corrugated structures and the local friction anisotropy induced by the atomic ripples can be controllably removed by simple AFM scans.
The present work proposes an improved numerical simulator for design and modification of large area capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) processing chamber. CCP, as notoriously well-known, demands the tremendously huge computational cost for carrying out transient analyses in realistic multi-dimensional models, because electron dissociations take place in a much smaller time scale (${\Delta}t{\approx}10-8{\sim}10-10$) than time scale of those happened between neutrals (${\Delta}t{\approx}10-1{\sim}10-3$), due to the rf drive frequencies of external electric field. And also, for spatial discretization of electron flux (Je), exponential scheme such as Scharfetter-Gummel method needs to be used in order to alleviate the numerical stiffness and resolve exponential change of spatial distribution of electron temperature (Te) and electron number density (Ne) in the vicinity of electrodes. Due to such computational intractability, it is prohibited to simulate CCP deposition in a three-dimension within acceptable calculation runtimes (<24 h). Under the situation where process conditions require thickness non-uniformity below 5%, however, detailed flow features of reactive gases induced from three-dimensional geometric effects such as gas distribution through the perforated plates (showerhead) should be considered. Without considering plasma chemistry, we therefore simulated flow, temperature and species fields in three-dimensional geometry first, and then, based on that data, boundary conditions of two-dimensional plasma discharge model are set. In the particular case of SiH4-NH3-N2-He CCP discharge to produce deposition of SiNxHy thin film, a cylindrical showerhead electrode reactor was studied by numerical modeling of mass, momentum and energy transports for charged particles in an axi-symmetric geometry. By solving transport equations of electron and radicals simultaneously, we observed that the way how source gases are consumed in the non-isothermal flow field and such consequences on active species production were outlined as playing the leading parts in the processes. As an example of application of the model for the prediction of the deposited thickness uniformity in a 300 mm wafer plasma processing chamber, the results were compared with the experimentally measured deposition profiles along the radius of the wafer varying inter-electrode gap. The simulation results were in good agreement with experimental data.
