  • It is well known that the metallo- phthalocyanine (MPcs) are sensitive to toxic gaseous molecules such as NO$_2$and also chemically and thermally stable. Therefore, lots of MPcs have been studied for the potential chemical sensor for NO$_2$gas using quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) or electrical conductivity. In this study, thin films of octa(2-ethylhexyloxy) copper-phthalocyanine were prepared by Langmuir -Blodgett method and characterized by using UV-VIS spectroscopy and ellipsometry. Transfer condition, and characterization of LB films were investigated and preliminary results of current-voltage(I-V) characteristics of these films exposed to NO$_2$gas as a function of film thickness, temperature and temperature were discussed.

  • We studied on the ultra thin DMPC by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method. The $\pi$ -A isotherm of the DMPC was measured at the air-water interface varying with the compressing speed and amounts of solutions for spreading. DMPC molecules have one phosphatidylcholine head group and two long alky groups with carbonyl group. Displacement currents generated during the compression of monolayers of DMPC on the surface of water were investigated. The molecular arrangement of deposited films were evaluated by measuring the absorption with the UVspectrometer. And we made structures of metal(Au)/DMPC/Metal(Au) and examined electron through DMPC LB films by means of current-voltage(I-V) measurement .

  • MLS capacitor with lipid ultra thin films were deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method on the sillicon wafer. The current versus voltage and capacitance versus voltage relationships are depend on the applied voltage, electrode area and electrode materials. LB films deposited were made of L-$\alpha$-DLPC, the 1 layer's thickness of 35$\AA$ was measured by ellipsometer. And MLS capacitor with different electrode materials, the work function of these materials was investigated to increase the leakage current. The result indicated the lower leakage current and very high saturation value of capacitance was reached within 700-800 pF when the two electrode was Ag. And $\varepsilon$$_1$, $\varepsilon$$_2$ versus photon energy showed good film formation.

  • We give pressure stimulation into organic thin films and then manufacture a device under the accumulation condition that the state surface pressure is 20[mN/m]. LB layers of Arac. acid deposited by LB method were deposited onto y-type silicon wafer as x, y, z-type film. In processing of a device manufacture, we can see the process is good from the change of a surface pressure for organic thin films and transfer ratio of area per molecule. The structure of manufactured device is Au/arachidic acid/Al, the number of accumulated layers. Also, we then examined of the MIM device by means of I-V. The I-V characteristic of the device is measured from 0 to +2[V].

  • A study on the electrical conduction characteristics of the ultrathin organic films is one of the important factors for the development of molecular electronic devices. The Langmuir- Blodgett(LB) technique has recently been attracted interest as a method of the deposition ultrathin films. We hate fabricated N-docosyl N\`-methyl viologen-diTCNQ(DMVT) anion radical LB film and investigated the molecular orientation and electrical conduction characteristics. We have measured infrared transmission-reflection spectra. The alkyl chain is found to he well-ordered with the tilt angle of 13$^{\circ}$ with respect to the substrate surface normal and the TCNQ plane is tilted at 76$^{\circ}$ the surface normal. In ESR spectrum, we confirmed that a half-amplitude linewidth is clearly dependent on the incident angle, which indicates conducting species change. The in-plane conductivity of 31 lagers is approximately 1.33$\times$10$^{-6}$ S/cm. The ohmic behaviour was observed below 0.6 V, when current-voltage(I-V) characteristics was measured verically.

Fabrication as Ultra-thin films of Amphiphilic Squarylium dye by the Langmuir-Blodgett Technique (랭뮤어-블로젯법에 의한 양친매성 스쿠아릴리움 색소의 초박막 제작)

  • Ultra-thin films of amphiphilic Squarylium dye were prepared on the hydrophilic glass substrate by Langumuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. From the measurement of the surface pressure-area($\pi$-A) isotherm at air-water interface, it was found that amphiphilic Squarylium dye can form the stable monolayers. Using the LB technique, the Z-type monolayer assembly can be obtained. The amphiphilic Squarylium dye LB films exhibit λ\ulcorner at 684nm. The absorption is significantly red-shifted from solution of amphiphilic Squarylium dye(637nm in chloroform), suggesting that the Squarylim chromophores form J-aggregate in the LB film.

  • We have investgated on the monolayer LB film of BASH-DMPC mixture on an ITO for the photoisomerization by light irradiation. We measured electrochemical properties by using cyclic voltammetry with a three-electrode system, An Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire counter electrode and LB film-coated ITO working electrode in $NaClO_4$ solution at a variable concentration and monolayer LB films. A measuring range was reduced from initial potential to -1350mV, continuously oxidized to 1650 mV and measured to the initial point. The scan rate were 50, 100, 150 and 200 mV/s. As a results, LB films of 8A5H-DMPC appeared reversible process caused by the reduction-oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram.

A Study on the Stability of Ultra-Thin Film Mixed with Stearic Acid and Phospholipid (스테아르산과 인지질 혼합물의 농도변화에 대한 유기초박막의 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the stability with respect to the Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) monolayer films of stearic acid and phospholipid(L-${\alpha}$-dimyristoylphosphatidyl choline, DMPC) mixture. LB films of stearic acid and DMPC monolayer were deposited by the LB method on the indium tin oxide(ITO) glass. The electrochemical properties measured by cyclic voltammetry with three-electrode system in $0.05N\;NaClO_4$ solution, -0.3 V initial, 1650 mV switching potential and -1350 mV final potential. As a result, monolayer LB films of stearic acid and phospholipid mixture was appeared on irreversible process caused by the oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram. Diffusion coefficient (D) of stearic acid and DMPC mixture(molar ratio 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) was calculated $1.4{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.7{\times}10^{-3}$ and $1.6{\times}10^{-3}(cm^2/s)$ in $0.05N\;NaClO_4$ solution, respectively.

  • Dielectric properties of $C_{22}$-Quinolium(TCNQ) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were studied as a function of frequency(10Hz-13MHz) and annealing temperature($20{\sim}240^{\circ}C$). A complex dielectric constant ${\epsilon}^*={\epsilon}'-i{\epsilon}"$, in general, shows the frequency dependence of orientational polarization in the measured frequency range. A dielectric permittivity ${\epsilon}'$ at 10Hz is around 8.2 and decreases very slowly as the frequency increases up to 1 MHz, and then suddenly drops above this frequency, while a dielectric loss factor ${\epsilon}"$ reaches a maximum near 1 MHz. Its annealing temperature dependence at 10Hz shows that ${\epsilon}'$ and ${\epsilon}"$ increase as the temperature increases upto $180^{\circ}C$, even though there is a little drop near $120{\sim}160^{\circ}C$. Both ${\epsilon}'$ and ${\epsilon}"$ drop quickly above $180^{\circ}C$. which may be thought of a destruction of the LB films. Another fact of the annealing temperature dependence of the dielectric constant is an occurrence of the new dielectric dispersion below 100Hz. This low frequency dispersion is getting clear above $80^{\circ}C$.

Interaction of a Pyridyl-Terminated Carbosiloxane Dendrimer with Metal Ions at the Air-Water Interface

  • A new class of carbosiloxane dendrimer (G4-48PyP) terminated with 4-pyridylpropano I was synthesized and its possible application to functional thin films was examined through metal complexation and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The highly concentrated periphery pyridyl groups of G4-48PyP were exposed on aq. aluminum ions at the air-water interface. The monolayers showed stability up to ca. 50 mN/m of surface pressure. When the subphase became acidic or alkaline, the monolayers changed to condensed phase. The presence of aluminum ions also caused reduction of the molecular area. The macroscopic images of the monolayers were monitored by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) and only the images of dendrimer aggregates could be observed after the monolayer collapse. The surface images of the monolayer LB film were scanned by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The convex structures of single and aggregate molecules were directly observed. The structures of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The UV-Vis spectrum of the aluminum ion-complexed LB film showed additional band around 670nm, which was not found in the spectra of dendrimer itself or aq. aluminum ions. XPS spectra also supported the incorporation of aluminum ions into the LB films.
