Prohibition of lane changes in bridges and tunnels have been many problems in throughputs of expressways caused by heavy vehicles and slow-moving traffics. Nevertheless, those are constructed actively by the general trends, which are preservation of environment and ecosystem are more important, because mountainous districts are about 70% across the whole extent of Korea. In this paper, the proper design standards for permission of lane changes in bridges and tunnels classified into structure, safe, and driver's conveniences are suggested as follows. 1. Right shoulder should have more than 2.5m in bridges and tunnels. 2. Sufficient equipments of guidance like as directional signs, fingerposts, variable message signs, and markings should be established to smooth and safe lane changes of drivers. 3. Snow melting systems should be established in bridges worried about freezing. 4. Tunnels must be not only satisfied standards for prevention of disasters (2004.11) and lighting rules (KSA 3703), but also established anti-freezing facilities in entrance and exit. 5. The drivers should have honed on their car lights.

The purpose of this study is to establish the standard of fire lane design to improve the performance of disaster prevention in local area. To accomplish it, we have focused on three research methods as below: first, we have expected disaster occurrence based on emergency tendency in local area; second, we have verified fire lane routes design through fire lane modeling and network analysis; third, we have quantitatively examined a possibility of danger of fire lanes through current road network modeling and analysis. The result of this study could be helpful to effective fire lane designs and quantitative analyses.
Until now, u-turn lane installation methods have been studied variously. But, There is no specific standard yet. This study ranges are commercial area in Incheon metropolitan city through field investigation and presents specific design standard for efficient operation of left turn using a field data through calculating relevant permitted u-turn lane length and minimum separation distance from the front intersection to starting point of permitted u-turn lane in urban signalized intersections in commercial area. Relevant permitted u-turn lane length is found to be 32m and minimum separation distances from the front intersection to starting point of permitted u-turn lanes are 72m, 40m, 24m in case of 1 left turn lane, 2 left turn lanes and 3 left turn lanes respectively. By comparing result values and field data, they had a large difference under the similar situations in their lengths. This result is caused of no specific standard about design of u-turn lanes. If results of this study applied to design of u-turn lanes, signalized intersections in urban commercial areas would be operated more safety and efficiently.

Visibility of lane marking is impaired at night, or in case of rain, and thereby threatens traffic safety. Recently, various studies and technology have been developed to improve lane marking visibility, such as the extension of lane marking life expectancy (up to 1.5 times), improvement of lane marking equipment, improvement of lane marking visibility (32.7%) by applying phosphorescent material mixed paint, and expressway lane design standards alternative (length 6m, gap 12m, width 13cm: 27.8% of painted surface are reduced) adoption with ergonomic analysis. In this study, a set of cost-benefit analyses was performed for the cases where such techniques were applied. Based on the literature review, 26.9% of traffic accidents would be prevented by improving lane marking visibility by 32.7%; accident reduction benefit was calculated as much as 12.5 billion KRW. Meanwhile, total increased cost when introducing phosphorescent material mixed paint and lane design standards alternative is calculated as 30.6 billion KRW. However, economic feasibility could not be secured with 0.41 of cost-benefit ratio when applied to the expressway network as a whole. Additionally, cost-benefit (B/C) analysis was applied to each of the top 20 night accident hot spots and the results of B/C ratios were between 0.67 and 4.20, showing that 11 out of 20 spot sections of expressway can have economic feasibility. This results indicate, with this kind of pavement marking applied to accident hot spots in rural expressway, better visibility and economic feasibility can be guaranteed through traffic accident reduction. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.
In this study, estimated the minimum lane width for the curved section by analyzing of lateral sway distance and compared the lane width for result of this study and a precedent study for straight section on urban roads. Then suggested minimum lane width of road alignments and vehicle classes. The lane width of curved section that was investigated was 2.79m~3.40m. Analysis of frequency distribute and cumulative frequency distribution for lateral sway distance on the basis of 85% of the suggested vehicles. The result of study, minimum lane width for the curved section was 2.31m~2.58m in the case of small size car and 2.80m~3.27m in the case of large size car. Result of this study is judged that it is necessary to case for introduction of green transit, during road construction and construct a road for small size car. Expect result of this study can be used for the application of flexible design standard according the purpose of road designer.

The depth, width and alignment of fairway that are main port water facilities should be designed considering the various elements including particulars of design ships, weather and sea conditions around fairway and method of ship-handling. However not only the existing Japanese design standard for fairway and also those of other countries do not take into consideration of such kind of elements and no design standard is made by quantitative analysis. In this circumstance the new design standard (Approach Channels, A Guide for Design) depending on classified various elements and quantitative analysis was proposed in 1997 by PIANC and IAPH. But it was proved that calculated values according to this standard were unfounded and had some problems to output the discontinuous value by small difference of calculation condition because the each value fur each element was simply added. And also it is hard to apply this standard to the design of port water facilities in Japan because this [A Guide for Design] is the design standard for long channels in European port. The proposal of more reasonable Japanese standard will be expected by applying the study result of naval architecture and navigation and by the cooperation of ship operators to use fairway, naval architects to built ships and civil engineers to dredge fairway. The concept of a fairway in 'Design standard fur fairway in next generation' is defined as passage for approach channel) and traffic lane designated by light buoys as navigable water for safe navigation. In 'Design standard for fairway in next generation' depth, width and alignment are picked up among many design elements of a fairway. Design method for those elements is shown based on design ships and navigational environments. This standard shows the method of design for each dimension depending on characteristic on design ship and weather and sea condition. On the other hand, in case of existing fairway, it is possible to decide the size of ship and navigation criteria by opposite analysis.

This study aims to review whether climbing lane installment is needed by analyzing the impact that standard trucks have on traffic according to vertical alignment at SMART highway, and if climbing lanes are required to propose truck speed change curves based on slope length. We used VISSIM simulation model to obtain the speed change of the standard truck on uphill roads. The standard truck on climbing lanes was set for 100kg/kW (170lb/hp) with the entry speeds set and analyzed by 90, 100, and 110 km/h considering the future speed limit of trucks. The results of the research show that under SMART highway circumstance, the 1 and 2% vertical alignment is not needed at the climbing lane but 3% vertical alignment is necessary. In order to install the climbing lane at 3% vertical alignment, the speed change curve of truck depending on slope length of 90, 100, and 110km/h of entry speed is proposed.

PURPOSES : This study is to conduct the research on the design principle for the driver's safety and comfort in installing consecutive curves of superhighway. METHODS : Superhighway does not currently exist in domestic area. Thus, this study is conducted by collecting driving behavior usage of 30 people who are involved in the members of the virtual driving simulation. By identifying the distribution characteristics of each scenario in ANOVA & Tukey Test, the distribution are categorized into three groups. RESULTS : In the case of Group A in Section 3 (R2 entry part), lane departure exceeds the safety standard, which means to be risky condition. And then in the case of Group B and C, the lane departure values applying theoretical formula was evenly distributed compared to the proven values. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result, the continuous curve design principles at superhighway should follow three standards as follow. First, an additional linear part needs to be inserted between two curves. Second, what if inserting the linear part is difficult, it would be better to insert a curve more than 2,000m. Third, R1/R2 ratio should not be over two. This design primarily aims to the safety of the operator. Such road alignment also meets the expectations of drivers, thus, it may help drivers to be compatible and amenable while driving continuous curve in superhighway.

Road lighting has emerged in importance as an essential system to secure safety and visibility for drivers and pedestrians. According to the Road Lighting Standards (KS A 3701), the luminance uniformity (U0) should be 0.4, the luminance uniformity for lanes (UI) should be 0.5, and a threshold increment (TI) of 10% should be satisfied. In this study, we conducted simulations using the Relux program in which the secondary optical lens was applied to a 21 W engine. Ten LED engines were installed on a two-way four-lane road, and the simulation result satisfied the requirements with U0 0.47, UI 0.63 and TI 8%. The U0, UI, and TI were compared with the angle of the LED streetlight varied in the range of $9^{\circ}{\sim}15^{\circ}$ with $0.5^{\circ}$ intervals. The range was selected as ${\pm}25%$ of the standard inclination angle of $12^{\circ}$ according to the Road Lighting Standard. The U0 was high and the UI and TI were low when the tilting angle was in the range of $9.5^{\circ}{\sim}10.5^{\circ}$. Consequently, an optimum-design of lighting distribution was obtained for the concrete two-way four-lane road when the inclination angle was $9^{\circ}$.
