  • This study measured the importance and satisfaction of the values related to 'New Ruralism' using the IPA(Importance-Performance Analysis) technique by the rural leaders' group. In the result, the satisfaction value was evaluated lower in the importance of 'landscape and ecological resource conservation', 'settlement environment', and 'population' related items. On the other hand, the items of 'tourism resource management', 'landscape damage', and 'landscape and ecological resource conservation' showed high satisfaction. Therefore, the leaders' group of Gochang-gun perceived the importance of local tourism image, landscape damage prevention, settlement environment, and rural landscape in 'New Ruralism' management. However, the leaders' group valued lower in the items of population, ecological value and natural and historical tourist sites. This seems to be a characteristic of the leaders' group mainly engaged in agriculture. Through factor analysis, the six items excluded from the analysis were considered important factors in 'New Ruralism' in Gochang-gun through a review of previous studies. Still, the leaders' group of Gochang-gun did not recognize them as important items in the rural resource. However, these items will be able to contribute to the development of 'New Ruralism' in Gochang-gun, and it is necessary to improve the awareness of the leader group. Even if local governments or experts present an ideal goal for rural development, it is difficult to achieve the goals if there is a difference from the perception of residents. Therefore, it is important to understand the perception of 'New Ruralism' of the leaders' group who plays an important role in regional development projects.

  • Gyeong Po in Gangneung is highly recognized as a scenic area that is home to twelve traditional pavilions which are still in existence today. Since the modification of the Natural Park Act in 2007, there has been serious concern about the regulation of the heights of buildings surrounding Gyeong Po. In light of this, the present study aims to provide some guidelines for the regulation of building height in the modified Natural Park Act on the basis of investigations of landscape characteristics of Gyeong Po and the psychological influences of changing building heights. The analysis of the view from the pavilions located around Gyeong Po Lake indicated that the strategic landscape control points were Gyeong Po Dae and Bang Hae pavilions in terms of landscape management. These two landscape control points were considered as points from which people could view the greatest part of the landscape surrounding Gyeong Po Lake. The results of a preference analysis revealed that the views from Gyeong Po Dae to Juk Do were of relatively higher preference than the view from Bang Hae pavilion. This finding emphasized the importance of landscape management in Juk Do and its surroundings. A factor analysis resulted in three factors including attractiveness, tranquility, and orderliness. A comparison of the magnitude of influence of these three factors showed that the order of influence to preference was: attractiveness>tranquility>orderliness. These results highlight the need to introduce landmarks or unique buildings into the areas because the panoramic views of Gyeong Po Lake are relatively flat as lake views go. There should also be a variety of skylines harmonizing with the natural landscapes and landscape management for building groups, rather than individual building control, to enhance tranquility. Analysis of the psychological effects of building height suggests that, regardless of view points, preference was split at a 30 meter building height. This was indicative that viewer preference would drop when building heights are controlled to allow heights over 30 meters. The present study was not able to take varying view points and story heights into account. A more detailed study considering building types, the arrangement of buildings and the number of building stories is needed for effective landscape management in the Gyeong Po Dae area.

  • Philosophers Of aeBthetics have tended to limit their Suhject to include only objects Of art. In contrast to art objects, landscapes include elements of both art and nature, and the aesthetic experiences of landscape are ordinarty ones. Thus, the theoretical alternatives, that cannot be like the traditional aesthetic dogma of art, must be explored. Jay Appleton's theory is the firsts attempt to develop a comprehensive theory of landscape aesthetics. He concentrates on the question 'what do we like about landscape and why do we like it ' He takes the assumption that the aesthetic experience of landscape is pleasurable or satisfying, and suggests the biologically oriented theory, called 'prospect-refuge theory.'Although his theory is stimulating and highly speculative, it depends on the 'aesthetic attitude' theory of Kantian thought. His theory can be criticized for its biologically deterministic nature and its reductionism To respond to Appleton's shortcomings, that is, to resolve the conflict between biological and cultural explanations of aesthetic experience of landscape, Steven Bourassa tries to combine biological, cultural, and personal modes in a comprehensive paradigm for research in landscape aesthetics. This tripartite paradigm seems to promise to be meaningful if helping to pose important questions as well as in. avoiding conceptual errors about aesthetic domain of landscape. However, Bourassa's theory fails to integrate such three separate kinds of moder In the final analysis both Appleton and Bourassa present same succeases in expanding the scope of aesthetics to embrace landscape. Most important for a theory in landscape aesthetics must be its ability to enlarge our awareness of the aesthetic domain and its sound logic and evidence to criticize our problematic beliefs about he aesthetic idea of landscape.

  • This study reviews the current status of the Korean landscape resources survey and foreign cases in order to determine the meaning and importance of it. Several cases are compared based on the evaluation method, the evaluation criteria and the application plan. Twelve domestic cases of landscape resources survey are reviewed to understand the current status and limitations of the Korean status, and 5 foreign cases to determine the implications for the Korean system. As the result of the analysis, some implications are drawn for domestic landscape resource system. First of all, it is suggested to establish more objective criteria to evaluate and select landscape resources. Various values of landscape resources should be included into the criteria and more people, as well as experts, should participate to reflect local conditions. Secondly, the management for the landscape resources must be implemented continuously. It is important to introduce a periodic reassessment system and to construct and manage a database of the landscape resources. Lastly, the landscape resource system should be integrated into other programs such as an environmental impact assessment and landscape planning. For a better landscape resource management system and efficient evaluation, resources should be comprehensively managed including various landscape types. It is essential to establish supporting policies and legislation. This research covered only the current status of the landscape resource survey and reviewed a limited number of foreign cases. Despite these limitations, it is meaningful for showing the importance of landscape resource management and to suggest some future tasks for better landscape resources management.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the visions of visual landscape planning and to suggest improvements for it. This study overviews currents methods of making the vision of visual landscape planning by group interview with hands-on workers. Thirty-two cases of visual landscape planning are reviewed to analyze the forms and contents of vision of visual landscape planning. The purpose of urban vision and city slogans are fairly similar to the vision of visual landscape planning; therefore, this study reviews and compares them. According to this study, we conducted writing direction and policy implications. The results of this study are as follows. The vision of visual landscape planning is written by consulting the landscape resources survey and visions of upper plans. These writing methods are able to enhance the consistency of each chapter in visual landscape planning, and the consistency between visual landscape planning and upper plans. Thus, it is desirable to revise landscape planning guidelines with this method. The current vision of visual landscape planning is written in the form of a city slogan. But the vision of visual landscape planning is not a means of publicity and transformational use. So, the form of the vision needs to be revised. This study analyzed the correlation among the vision of visual landscape planning, urban vision, and city slogan. There is a closer correspondence between the vision of visual landscape planning and urban vision than city slogan. This result means that it is beneficial to write the vision of visual landscape planning in consideration of the upper plan. Henceforward, for maintaining and enhancing consistency detailed contents in landscape planning guidelines are needed.

  • The study aims to identify factors related to landscape structure and socioeconomic characteristics that influence adults' physical activity and health. The study analyzes data from 148,643 respondents from the Korea Community Health Survey conducted in 2021. The study measures various factors, including the frequency of physical activity, stress, depression, and landscape metrics of forest patches. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used, controlling for socio-demographic characteristics. Larger forest patches and more irregular shapes are associated with higher levels of physical activity among adults. The percentage and area of the forest patch are associated with fewer mental health complaints. Configuration-related landscape metrics such as shape or arrangement of the forest patch did not show a significant association with physical activity. Overall, the study provides insights into how specific characteristics of forest patches in urban areas may influence physical activity and mental health among adults. It emphasizes the importance of green spaces and their potential positive effects on both physical and mental well-being.

  • An artificial disturbance like forest fragmentation has affected the sustainability of forest ecosystem. Therefore, in order to manage the forest ecosystem efficiently needed to analyze quantity and quality (structural pattern) of forest simultaneously. This study analyzed the structural patterns of forest landscape to provide a basic data for evaluation and management of forest ecosystem in Nakdong River Basin during 10 years from 1980s to 1990s using landscape indices and GIS methods. Forest distribution maps and 6 landscape indices(LPI, PD, ED, MSI, CPLAND, IJI) for the analysis were reconstructed from land-cover maps constructed by Ministry of Environment and pearson correlation analysis. According to the structural analysis of forest landscape using landscape indices, the forest fragmentation of watersheds along the main stream of the Nakdong river was more severe than any other watersheds. Futhermore, the Nakong-sangju and Nakdong-miryang watersheds had unstable forest structures as well as least amount of forest quantity. Thus, these watersheds need significant amount of forest through a new forest management policy considering local environmental conditions. The connectivity between forests in local regions should be considered as well.
