  • In this paper, we introduced a test environment to test a vision-aided navigation system, as an alternative navigation system when global positioning system (GPS) is unavailable, for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial system. It is efficient to use a virtual environment to test and evaluate the vision-aided navigation system under development, but currently no suitable equipment has been developed in Korea. Thus, the proposed test environment is developed to evaluate the performance of the navigation system by generating input signal modeling and simulating operation environment of the system, and by monitoring output signal. This paper comprehensively describes research procedure from derivation of requirements specifications to hardware/software design according to the requirements, and production of the test environment. This test environment was used for evaluating the vision-aided navigation algorithm which we are developing, and conducting simulation based pre-flight tests.

  • Hydraulic pumps are used to control the landing wheels of aircrafts, and their proper operation is vital to plane safety It is well hewn that adhesive wear failure is a major cause of pump failure. A dual nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation process calling for the implantation of nitrogen at two different energies and doses has been developed to enhance the surface properties of the disks in the pumps. The procedures meet the strict temperature requirement of <200$^{\circ}C$, and after the treatment, the working lifetime of the pumps increases by more than a factor of two. This experimental protocol has been adopted by the hydraulic pump factory as a standard manufacturing procedure.

  • This paper deals with analysis of measuring power dissipation when Maglev is running. With the various running scenarios for Maglev, power dissipation was measured and a comparative analysis of it and wheel-on rails were carried out. The purpose of this paper is to confirm the efficiency and economics on operation of Maglev and reflect detail design later. When the running scenarios of Maglev are the status of landing on and levitation, running at rated acceleration and deceleration and according to changes of velocity, the power dissipation was measured. The measured results are analyzed considering with apparent electric power and active power, reactive power and power factor etc. Due to the limited test track condition, it is very limited to compare and analyze Maglev and general trains. Nevertheless, It is a task of great significance to identify the efficiency and economics on operating Maglev through the results of measuring power dissipation. In the future, measuring power dissipation through more various scenarios will be carried out, and the results will be reflected the design.

  • The procedures of Continuous Descent Approach(CDA) is designed to minimize the thrust required during landing, thereby reducing fuel consumption, noise and emissions compared to conventional approach procedures. Widespread implementation of CDA would result in significant reductions in the environmental impact and aircraft operation costs. This paper estimated the possible economic effects from the perspective of airliners through cost-benefit analysis, provided that the CDA is introduced. It is now proposed that a more comprehensive analysis model, which includes the reduced ATC communication burden between controllers and pilots, not to mention the economic aspect, should be established for the improvement.

  • The FAA, along with the ICAO and other members of the civil aviation community, has recognized that a GNSS will provide the primary stand-alone navigation system in the 21st Century. FAA has initiated plans to transition from its present ground-based navigation and landing system to satellite-based using signals generated by the GPS. In spite of some risks, GPS users are increasing rapidly. About 52 aircraft equipped with various GPS in their system and wide spread of GPS may be expected in Korea. However, the regulations concerning with CPS implementation were not established by the government. Another problem is GPS receiver's interface. The user interface, operating method and capability vary with GPS class and model. As a direct operator for the system, pilots have to ensure these limitations and rules for efficient adaptation and safety. The issues identified by the study are highly interrelated, and are evidence of aviation system problem. To treat one issue in isolation may improve certain aspects of the aviation system, but will ultimately fail to fundamentally increase the safety and efficiency for the system.

  • The first Type Certificate project for small airplane is in progress in the Republic of Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the circumstances that the airplane developed and certificated by this country will exported to foreign countries and operated in the world. One of the main items to be prepared is the systems related with continuing airworthiness of aircraft during the operation. From this point of view, the systems and corresponding capabilities to maintain the aircraft to continue the flight and safe landing will be the immediate work. This study is to review the continuing airworthiness system established by foreign countries such as USA FAA and European EASA and to propose how we will setup our continuing airworthiness system for the airplane developed and certificated by the Republic of Korea.

  • Optimal Power Flow (OPF) is an important operational and planning problem in minimizing the chosen objective functions of the power systems. The recent developments in power electronics have enabled introduction of dc links in the AC power systems with a view of making the operation more flexible, secure and economical. This paper formulates a new OPF to embrace dc link equations and presents a heuristic optimization technique, inspired by the behavior of fireflies, for solving the problem. The solution process involves AC/DC power flow and uses a self adaptive technique so as to avoid landing at the suboptimal solutions. It presents simulation results of IEEE test systems with a view of demonstrating its effectiveness.

  • The modelling and controller design of the EMV(electro-magnetic valve) for vehicle engine are considered in this paper. For the analysis and controller design, the governing equation of the EMV system is derived. For a good performance of the system, the start control, the holding control and the swing control are included in the controller design of the EMV system. In order to reduce landing speed of the valve, the on-time delay control which mainly come from the optimal control theory is employed. In order to reduce the power consumption of the system, the pick-up and hold operation has been used for the magnetic coil. The simulation and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the control method.

  • An aircraft carrier is a combat ship that acts as an aircraft base at sea and performs combat through aircraft mounted as a military ship operating the aircraft. The Navy proposed a 40,000-ton light aircraft carrier operation plan that could be equipped with vertical takeoff and landing fighter jets and helicopters around 2033, and based on this, this study examined the operation of aircraft control equipment among the aviation support systems required for operating light aircraft carriers in Korea. PriFly, TWR's ILARTS, ILM for airspace control, ASR, PAR, LAAS or RNAV, PALS (JPALS) for access control are required as essential equipment, and communication network and SCATT-16 are required along with URN-25 TACAN, ICLS (El/Az), ACLS OLS, MOVAS, IFLOLS, etc. This study consists of two parts, and part 2 will describe a specific control method on an aircraft carrier.

  • The runway occupancy time of landing aircraft is an important factor in determining runway capacity. The purpose of this study is to suggest improvement measures for runway occupancy time to improve the operation of existing airports. In order to derive improvement measures, a comparative analysis was conducted on the effectiveness of improvement using aircraft operation status data for specific days at the case airport. The FAA REDIM model was used to analyze the improvement plan, and the improvement application function of the model was used to confirm the effect of improving runway capacity by adding a rapid escape taxiway to an airport without a rapid escape taxiway. This study's approach can be applied to the derivation of runway improvement measures and preliminary prediction of effectiveness, and it presents cases that can be applied to future airport construction projects or airport improvement projects.
