  • The Entry-Descent-Landing process of a lander involves many environmental and technical challenges. To solve these problems, recently, terrestrial relative navigation (TRN) technology has been essential for landers. TRN is a technology for estimating the position and attitude of a lander by comparing Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data and image data collected from a descending lander with pre-built reference data. In this paper, we present a method for generating descent dataset and extracting landmarks, which are key elements for developing TRN technologies to be used on Mars. The proposed method generates IMU data of a descending lander using a simulated Mars landing trajectory and generates descent images from high-resolution ortho-map and digital elevation map through a ray tracing technique. Landmark extraction is performed by an area-based extraction method due to the low-textured surfaces on Mars. In addition, search area reduction is carried out to improve matching accuracy and speed. The performance evaluation result for the descent dataset generation method showed that the proposed method can generate images that satisfy the imaging geometry. The performance evaluation result for the landmark extraction method showed that the proposed method ensures several meters of positioning accuracy while ensuring processing speed as fast as the feature-based methods.

  • As a basic research for the development of Korean lunar lander, propulsion system development for ground test is in progress. Thrust for descent is 200 N class. Design target is 220 N in vacuum thrust at 100 g/s flow rate, 200 psi chamber pressure. For ground test, thrust measurement system using LM guide was developed and test was performed. The result shows 160 N thrust in atmosphere condition at 210 psi chamber pressure.

  • As an alternative of the existing honeycomb shock absorbing device, the new approach on shock absorbing design using the extrusion of hyper-viscoelastic material such as silicon rubber is studied in this paper. The strain energy and stress-strain characteristic of viscoelastic material at extrusion process through the metered orifice has a similarity with the honeycomb core for maximizing shock absorbing capability. And in order to evaluate the design feasibility of this device and to understand the shock absorbing mechanism of energy transformation, finite element analysis and quasi-static compression test of the multi-stage extrusion shock absorber are examined in this paper.

  • Interval mapping using microsatellite markers was employed to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the experimental cross between Berkshire and Yorkshire pigs. In order to derive critical values (CV) for test statistics for declaring significance of QTL, permutation test (PT) of Churchill and Doerge method(1994) and the analytical method(LK) of Lander and Kruglyak(1995) were used by each trait and chromosome. 525 $F_2$ progeny phenotypes of five traits(carcass weight, loin eye area, marbling score, cholesterol content, last back fat thickness) and genotypes of 125 markers covering the genome were used. Data were analyzed by line cross regression interval mapping with an F-test every by 1cM. PT CV were based on 10,000 permutations. CV at genome-wise test were 10.5 for LK and ranged from 8.1 to 8.3 for PT, depending on the trait. CV, differed substantially between methods, led to different numbers of quantitative trait loci (QTL) to be detected. PT results in the least stringent CV compared at the same % level.

  • Korean lunar explorer will be launched by korean launcher KSLV-2 in the 2020s in accordance with national space development strategy. Korean lunar explorer is composed of two unmanned orbiter and lander and should be developed as small size and light weight within 550kg of launch mass due to launcher's loading capability. A structure of lunar explorer is required to have sufficient stiffness and strength under launch and operational environment as well as to accommodate mission equipment. This paper describes the result of a preliminary study on structural model design for korean lunar explorer.

  • The purpose of this paper is to predict the shock absorbing characteristics of the aluminum honeycomb in a lunar lander. Aluminum honeycomb has been used for shock absorbers of lunar lander due to its characteristics such as light weight, high energy absorption efficiency and applicability under severe space environments. Crush strength of the honeycomb should have strength to endure during shock energy absorbing process. In this paper, the crush strength, which depends on the shape of honeycomb and impact velocity, is estimated using FEM. Ls-dyna is used for finite element analysis of the honeycomb shock absorber. The unit cells of the honeycomb shape are modeled and used for the finite element analysis. Energy absorption characteristics are decided considering several conditions such as impact velocity, foil thickness and branch angle of the honeycomb.

  • Batch process TRN(Terrain Relative Navigation) using an altimeter is a technique to correct position by correlating a series of periodically measured terrain height profile and terrain height candidate profile of the DEM(Digital Elevation Map). However, it is generally known that the performance of TRN is degraded when measured terrain height profile and terrain height candidate profiles of the DEM are similar at hill or repetitive terrain. In this paper, area based terrain slope roughness index[11] is applied and area based terrain curvature roughness index which can detect similarity of terrain in ROI(Region Of Interest) is proposed to overcome this problem. Applying terrain roughness indexes to terrain relative navigation system of lunar lander, it is shown that TRN using area based terrain roughness results in improved performance compared to conventional trajectory based method through simulation.
