In this study, an overview of the Earth Observing System (EOS) program is provided with discussions on its spacecrafts and instruments, and on the scientific issues. The EOS satellites aim at monitoring the Earth environmental system by observing parameters of subsystems such as atmosphere, ocean, land, and biosphere. The first EOS flagship, Terra, was launched on December 1999. Five instruments onboard Terra can measure cloud and aerosol properties, radiation, terrestrial surface, and ocean color. The second EOS flagship, Aqua, which was launched on May 2002, loads six instruments that measure clouds, radiation, precipitation, terrestrial surface, ocean color and sea surface temperature. The observational data available from the EOS satellites may complement data from the Communication-Oceanography-Meteorology satellite, which will be launched in 2008, for meteorological and environmental forecasts.
This study focused on the a 20-year evaluation of the dynamism of critical thermal anomalies in Busan metropolitan area prompted by unusual infrastructural development and demographic growth rate. Archived Landsat thermal data derived-LST was the major input for UTFVI and hot spot analysis (Getis-Ord Gi*). Results revealed that the surface urban heat island-affected area has gradually expanded overtime from 23.32% to 32.36%; while the critical positive thermal anomalies (level-3 hotspots) have also spatially increased from 19.88% in 2000 to 23.56% in 2020, recording a net LST difference of > 5℃ between the maximum level-3 hotspot and minimum level-3 coldspot each year. It is been observed that thermal conditions of Busan have gradually deteriorated with time, which is potentially inherent in the rate of urban expansion. Thus, this work serves as an eye-opener to powers that be, to think and act constructively towards a sustainable thermal conform for city dwellers.
The effect of residual metallic sodium on the solidification cracking susceptibility of type 316FR stainless steel was investigated via transverse-Varestraint tests. And a solidification brittle temperature range (BTR) of type 316FR stainless steel was 37 K. However, the BTR expanded from 37 to 67 K, as the amount of metallic sodium at the specimen surface increased from 0 to $7.99mg/cm^2$. Microstructural observation of the weld metal suggested that metallic sodium existed in the weld metal, including in the cell boundaries, during welding solidification. Thermodynamic calculations suggested that sodium expanded the temperature range of solidliquid coexistence during welding solidification of the steel weld metal. Therefore, the increased solidification cracking susceptibility (i.e., expansion of the BTR) in the residual sodium environment was attributed to enhanced segregation of sodium during the welding solidification; this segregation, in turn, resulted in an expanded temperature range of solid-liquid coexistence.

We investigated characteristics of temperature variation in urban and suburban areas(e.g., paddy field, upland, park, residential area) and urban heat island(UHI) during winter(December 2005 to February 2006). The daily maximum air temperature was not significantly different between suburban and urban areas, whereas the daily minimum air temperatures were significantly lower in the suburban areas than that in the residential area. The wind speed in the urban park(0.3 m/s) was much lower than that in the paddy fields(2.3 m/s), likely due to an urban canopy layer formed by high buildings. The UHI intensity was represented by differences in daily minimum temperatures between urban residential and paddy field areas. The UHI intensity($4.1^{\circ}C$) in winter was larger than that($2.6^{\circ}C$) in summer. This may be because a stable boundary layer develops in the winter, and thereby this inhibits diffusion of heat from surface.
A simple bispectral threshold technique which reflects the temporal and spatial characteristics of the analysis area has been developed to classify the cloud type and estimate the cloud cover from GMS/S-VISSR(Stretched Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer) imagery. In this research, we divided the analysis area into land and sea to consider their different optical properties and used the same time observation data to exclude the solar zenith angle effects included in the raw data. Statistical clear sky radiance(CSRs) was constructed using maximum brightness temperature and minimum albedo from the S-VISSR imagery data during consecutive two weeks. The CSR used in the cloud anaysis was updated on the daily basis by using CSRs, the standard deviation of CSRs and present raw data to reflect the daily variation of temperature. Thresholds were applied to classify the cloud type and estimate the cloud cover from GMS/S-VISST imagery. We used a different thresholds according to the earth surface type and the thresholds were enough to resolve the spatial variation of brightness temperature and the noise in raw data. To classify the ambiguous pixels, we used the time series of 2-D histogram and local standard deviation, and the results showed a little improvements. Visual comparisons among the present research results, KMA's manual analysis and observed sea level charts showed a good agreement in quality.
In this study, the sensitivity of the mid-infrared radiance to atmospheric and surface factors was analyzed using the radiative transfer model, MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN6)'s simulation data. The possibility of retrieving the land surface temperature (LST) using only the mid-infrared bands at night was evaluated. Based on the sensitivity results, the LST retrieval algorithm that reflects various factors for night was developed, and the level of the LST retrieval algorithm was evaluated using reference LST and observed LST. Sensitivity experiments were conducted on the atmospheric profiles, carbon dioxide, ozone, diurnal variation of LST, land surface emissivity (LSE), and satellite viewing zenith angle (VZA), which mainly affect satellite remote sensing. To evaluate the possibility of using split-window method, the mid-infrared wavelength was divided into two bands based on the transmissivity. Regardless of the band, the top of atmosphere (TOA) temperature is most affected by atmospheric profile, and is affected in order of LSE, diurnal variation of LST, and satellite VZA. In all experiments, band 1, which corresponds to the atmospheric window, has lower sensitivity, whereas band 2, which includes ozone and water vapor absorption, has higher sensitivity. The evaluation results for the LST retrieval algorithm using prescribed LST showed that the correlation coefficient (CC), the bias and the root mean squared error (RMSE) is 0.999, 0.023K and 0.437K, respectively. Also, the validation with 26 in-situ observation data in 2021 showed that the CC, bias and RMSE is 0.993, 1.875K and 2.079K, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the LST can be retrieved using different characteristics of the two bands of mid-infrared to the atmospheric and surface conditions at night. Therefore, it is necessary to retrieve the LST using satellite data equipped with sensors in the mid-infrared bands.
In order to identify the characteristics of sea surface temperature (SST) differences between microwave SST from GCOM-W1/AMSR2 and in-situ measurements in the western coast of Korea, a total of 6,457 collocated matchup data were produced using the in-situ temperature measurements from marine buoy stations (Deokjeokdo, Chilbaldo, and Oeyeondo) from July 2012 to December 2017. The accuracy of satellite microwave SSTs was presented by comparing the ocean buoy data of Deokjeokdo, Chilbaldo, and Oeyeondo stations with the AMSR2 SST data more than five years. The SST differences between the microwave SST and the in-situ temperature measurements showed some dependence on environmental factors, such as wind speed and water temperature. The AMSR2 SSTs were tended to be higher than the in-situ temperature measurements during the daytime when the wind speed was low ($<6ms^{-1}$). On the other hand, they showed positive deviation increasingly as the wind speed increased for nighttime. In addition, increasing tendency of SST differences was related to decreasing sensitivity of microwave sensors at low temperatures and data contamination by land. A monthly analysis of the SST difference showed that unlike the previous trend, which was known to be the largest in winter when strong winds were blowing, the SST difference was largest in summer in Deokjeokdo and Chilbaldo buoy stations. This seemed to be induced by differential tidal mixing at the collocated matchup points. This study presented problems and limitations of the use of microwave SSTs with high contribution to the SST composites in the western coastal region off the Korean peninsula.

The result of analysis of the observed temperature data by the Serial Oceanography Investigation of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) during last 41 years from 1969 to 2008 showed that sea surface temperatures in the East, West and South Sea of Korea were clearly increased. In case of 100m depth, temperature was increased in the South Sea of Korea, but it was decreased in the East Sea. Especially, the temperature around the coastal area in the East Sea was significantly decreased by the spatial distribution of long-term change of temperature on 100m depth. It should lead to the decreasing trend in the long-term change of temperature on 100 m depth in the entire East Sea. The increasing trend was clearly larger in wintertime than in summertime by a factor of about 2 It means that the long-term increasing trend of sea surface temperature in the Korean Waters is usually caused by the distinctive increasing trend in wintertime. As the results of the analysis of air temperature and wind speed on the 6stations around the coastal area in the Korean Waters, air temperature was found to be continuously increased, but wind speed to be gradually decreased in winter. The weakness of vertical mixing by decreasing of wind speed caused to make the surface mixed layer shallow. it could be considered that the increasing trend of surface temperature was caused by weak mixing between surface and intermediate layers.
The accurate official map of air temperature does not exist for the Hawaiian Islands due to the limited number of weather stations on the rugged volcanic landscape. To alleviate the major problem of temperature mapping, satellite-measured land surface temperature (LST) data were used as an additional source of sample points. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) system provides hypertemperal LST data, and LST pixel values that were frequently observed (${\ge}$14 days during a 32-day composite period) had a strong, consistent correlation with air temperature. Systematic grid points with a spacing of 5km, 10km, and 20km were generated, and LST-derived air temperature estimates were extracted for each of the grid points and used as input to inverse distance weighted (IDW) and cokriging methods. Combining temperature data and digital elevation model (DEM), cokriging significantly improved interpolation accuracy compared to IDW. Although a cokriging method is useful when a primary variable is cross-correlated with elevation, interpolation accuracy was sensitively influenced by the seasonal variations of weather conditions. Since the spatial variations of local air temperature are more variable in the wet season than in the dry season, prediction errors were larger during the wet season than the dry season.

The land reclamation area of Saemangeum(Kunsan) is located between 126$^{\circ}$10' E~126$^{\circ}$50' E and 35$^{\circ}$35' N~356$^{\circ}$05'N at the western coast of the Korean peninsula. The are many small islands including extensive areas of semi-diurnally flooded and dewatered tidal flats. The reclamation area of Saemangeum has a range of 5.6m spring tide and the maximum tidal current speed is about 1.41m s-1 in ordinary spring tide. Most of the sediments deposited on the tidal flats are transported from the Geum river, the Manjyung river and The Dongjin river. The soil in this area consists of silty sand with the depth of 10m to 30m . The wind in winter is strong from the direction of northwest. In the past twenty years, land reclamation projects for agricutural purpose or industrial cocmplex have been mostly implemented along the western coast of Korea. Saemangeum coastal area is being constructed the33km sea dike and 40, 100ha reclamation area. The purpose of this study is to find the residual circulations in four seasons after the dike construction by a robust diagnostic and prognostic numerical model. Heat flux at the sea surface in January ,May , August , October was asopted on the basis on the daily inflow of solar radiation at the earth surface, assuming an average atomospheric transmission and no clouds , as a function of latitude and time of year(George L.P.J.E William, 1990). The discharge from the Geum , the Mankyung and the Dongjin rivers was adopted on the basis of experience formula of river flow in January , May ,August, October (The M. of C.Korea, 1993) . Water temperature and salinity along the open boundaries are obtained from the results of field observation s.
