  • The floodlighting assists the pilot in taxiing the aircraft into and out of the final parking position and provide lighting suitable for passenger to embark and debark and for personnel to load and unload cargo. It is composed of sodium lamps which is consuming high energy. It needs to develop a dedicated LED lamp to replace the existing lamps. In this paper, We propose a suitable asymmetric angle of LED lamps to avoid a pilot's glare and to meet the standard illumination. For this, we analyze asymmetric angle of sodium lamps which are using in airport and confirm whether the illumination distribution and glare index meet the relating standards by using simulation method. Also, we study the needs of asymmetric characteristics of LED ramp by simulating the LED lamps with and without asymmetric characteristics of ramp respectively. With the simulation result, finally we propose the best asymmetric angle of LED lamp to meet the average illumination standard, and avoid a pilot's glare.

  • Today there is an ever increasing effort to control high-pressure discharge lamps with electronic ballast. HID lamps can be ignited by high-voltage pulses and need an ignitor to start them. An ignitor gives high-voltage pulses to HID lamps which have the type of the arc discharge. Three kinds of ignitor circuits have been analyzed by the P-spice program and we have shown experimental results in this paper. The result of this study seems to be able to help to develope various ignitors.

  • Electroded lamps operated at a high enough frequency can usually be modeled for the purpose of ballast design, as a resistor. Electrodeless fluorescent lamps include other components such as the arc tube's inductance. But that's impedance is small and so will be neglected in this paper. So, electrodeless fluorescent lamps is modeled as a resistor. A SPICE compatible model was developed for an electrodeless fluorescent lamp(OSRAM SYLVANIA ICETRON/ENDURA 150W).

  • The electronic ballast for HID lamps needs to ignite lamps even though the length from the ballast to lamp is far away. Therefore, it needs to do the research on a resonant ignition to turn on the HID lamps because the reduction of ignition voltage is not much depending on the distance. However, the parasitic capacitance is increased depending the length of the cable, and it affects the resonant frequency. The ignitor voltage can be increased drastically under the resonant ignition through frequency sweep, and it is the main reason of blowing up. Therefore, the clamping diode is proposed to suppress the voltage of the primary winding during resonant ignition.

  • As the electrodes are not needed, the electrodeless lamps using the induction discharge have a long lifetime and are robust against the variable output condition of a ballast. This paper proposed a dimmable resonant inverter for the electrodeless lamps. The proposed resonant inverter formed a half bridge inverter adopted FWM to control the average output power of the inverter and the illumination of a lamp. In this paper, the proposed dimming algorithm was described and the prototype experimental setup for 100W electrodeless lamps was carried out to verify the validity of the proposed dimming method.

  • Currently-using low-pressure lamps are usually drivel by the AC power supply. There are good and bad points according to high or low frequency in AC power driving type. For the low-pressure lamps, its efficiency increases and flicker decreases when it ignites at high frequency. So we already use the high-frequency electronic ballast of the low-pressure discharge lamps broadly. But there are EMI interference in high-frequency driving type because of giving the fluorescent lamp the high- frequency current. So recently, we have a tendency to compensate for that defects by DC driving method. As follows, we suggest pseudo DC discharging electronic bar lasts for fluorescent lamps which have the characteristics of high efficiency and no flicker by driving constant current boosted square wave.

  • As products using LEDs are developed actively, also there has been large request for LED products that can replace traditional lamps like fluorescent lamps and metal halide lamps. But so far there is no proper standard that manufacturer can use and test it. As a result manufacturer can't develop retrofit LED lamps and sell it even they have technology. In this study, by analyzing control gear for fluorescent lamp that is currently used in market which is magnetic or electronic ballast, I'd like to develop proper test method by investigating compatibility between all-type control gear and LED retrofit products.

  • This paper presents the new detection method for the end of life on fluorescent lamps. At the end of lamp life, the lamp voltage and current asymmetrically increase and decrease more than normal state. If the ballast system does not have the protection function especially for T4 and T5 lamps, we may see the melting socket which is connected to the end of the lamp. To protect from this kind of abnormal status is the most important thing in the ballast system that has very old lamps.
