  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the volumetric change of teeth after preparation for various designs and margin locations through Micro CT analysis (Skyscan 1076: SKYSCAN, Konitch, Belgium). Materials and methods: The 36 artificial teeth were used to determine reduction volume of upper central incisor. According to the restorative design these 36 teeth were divided into 4 groups and according to the marginal location each group was divided into 3 subgroups. The volume of unprepared teeth was obtained by using Micro CT and the volume of prepared teeth was obtained in the same method. The CT scanned images before and after preparation were superimposed. Results: The volume difference was significantly increased as follows: traditional laminate veneer < full laminate veneer < all ceramic crown < metal ceramic crown. One-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison analyses were used to analyze the data in this study. In each group the volume difference was significantly increased as follows: 1 mm above CEJ < CEJ < 1 mm below CEJ (P<.05). The % volume difference of all ceramic crown and metal ceramic crown was 31 - 48% and that of laminate veneer was 14 - 30%. The volume difference of the traditional laminate veneer was 1/3 of that of metal ceramic crown. The full laminate (1 mm below CEJ) and all ceramic crown (1 mm above CEJ) showed a similar volume difference. Metal ceramic crown showed 13.7% more volume difference than all ceramic crown. Conclusion: There exists the difference in volumetric change according to designs of restoration and margin locations of preparation.

  • A laminate-composite film was developed using industry co-products of defatted mustard meal (DMM) and whey protein isolate (WPI). An individually prepared DMM-based film (DMM film) and a WPI-based film (WPI film) were thermally laminated at $130^{\circ}C$ at a rate of 30 cm/min. Microscopic images exhibited that the DMM film and the WPI film were continuously attached in the laminate without void spaces. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and water vapor permeability for the laminate were 0.7MPa, 4.0%, and $6.9g{\cdot}mm/kPa/h/m^2$, respectively. Stretchability and heat seal strength of the laminate were higher than those of the un-laminated DMM film. The film layers of the laminate were physically overlapped, not forming new biopolymer units induced by molecular interactions. The opportunity for DMM films to be used as food packaging materials for wrapping and sealing could be increased by thermal lamination with WPI films, which improves the stretchability and heat sealability of DMM films.

  • The purpose of this study was to evlauate the microleakage of 3 dentin bonding agents using different dentin pretreatment method under simulated physilogic pressure in cementing the porcelain laminate veneer. Noncarious 60 human maxillary molars were selected and randomly assigned to 4 groups of 15 each. The group with the margin placed on the enamel was classified as the control and the groups with the margin placed on root surface were subdivided into 3 groups according to the dentin bonding agents used. The group using All Bond 2 was classified as experimental group 1, the group using Scotchbond MP was classified as experimental group 2, and the group using Gluma was classified as experimental group 3. Roots were removed at 3mm below the cementoenamel junction, and reductions of the teeth for the porcelain laminate veneer were done on the mesial 1/2 of the buccal surface of each teeth. The pulp was extirpated and the pulp chamber was cleaned with 37% phosphoric acid for the patency of dentinal tubule. Under simulated physiologic pressure, porcelain laminate veneers were cemented to the teeth using each dentin bonding agent and luting cement. After cementation, all samples were stored at 36t in water for 24 hours and thermocycled for 1500 cycles, then immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin solution and the teeth were sectioned longitudinally by using diamond saw and the extent of microleakage was measured. The following results were obtained, 1. Microleakage was observed in a few samples of control group but all the samples of experimental groups. 2. The control group showed the less extent of microleakage than the experimental groups. In experimental groups the experimental group 1 & the experimental group 2 showed similiar extent of microleakage and the experimental group 3 showed the greater extent of microleakage than other groups. Conclusively, practicing the porcelain laminate veneers in the clinic, although the margin of the porcelain laminate veneer should be placed on enamel, in the case that it is inevitable to place the margin of the porcelain laminate veneer on the root surface, it is recommened to use dentin bonding agents which use no dentin pretreatment or a dentin pretreatment which can leave the smear plugs.

  • Since the electromagnetic properties of fiber reinforced polymeric laminate composite can be tailored effectively by adjusting its composition and regulating the stacking sequence, it is plausible material for fabricating the radar absorbing structures (RAS) of desired performance. In order to design the effective electromagnetic wave (EM) absorber with the fiber reinforced polymeric laminate composite, its electromagnetic characteristics should be available and could be regulated easily in the target frequency bands. In this study, dielectric characteristics of the E-glass/epoxy laminate composites were measured by the free space method in the X-band frequency range ($8.2\;{\sim}\;12.4\;GHz$). In order to describe the dielectric behavior of laminate composites of arbitrary stacking sequences, the equivalent circuit model and the laminating equations for estimating dielectric properties were proposed, and experimentally verified. From the comparison of the predicted and measured data, the proposed method predicted well the experimentally measured data.

  • This paper deals with optimal stacking sequence design of laminate composite structures. The stacking sequence optimisation of laminate composites is formulated as a combinatorial problem and is solved using Simulated Annealing (SA), an algorithm devised based on inspiration of physical process of annealing of solids. The combinatorial constraints are handled using a correction strategy. The SA algorithm is strengthened by embedding Tabu search in order to prevent recycling of recently visited solutions and the resulting algorithm is referred to as tabu embedded simulated Annealing (TSA) algorithm. Computational performance of the proposed TSA algorithm is enhanced through cache-fetch implementation. Numerical experiments have been conducted by considering rectangular composite panels and composite cylindrical shell with different ply numbers and orientations. Numerical studies indicate that the TSA algorithm is quite effective in providing practical designs for lay-up sequence optimisation of laminate composites. The effect of various neighbourhood search algorithms on the convergence characteristics of TSA algorithm is investigated. The sensitiveness of the proposed optimisation algorithm for various parameter settings in simulated annealing is explored through parametric studies. Later, the TSA algorithm is employed for multi-criteria optimisation of hybrid composite cylinders for simultaneously optimising cost as well as weight with constraint on buckling load. The two objectives are initially considered individually and later collectively to solve as a multi-criteria optimisation problem. Finally, the computational efficiency of the TSA based stacking sequence optimisation algorithm has been compared with the genetic algorithm and found to be superior in performance.

  • Cutouts are often provided in structural and aircraft components for ventilation, for access, inspection, electric lines and fuel lines or sometimes to lighten the structure. This paper addresses the effects of cutout shape (i.e., circular, square, diamond, elliptical-vertical and elliptical-horizontal) and size on buckling and postbuckling response of quasi-isotropic (i.e., $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$) composite laminate under uni-axial compression. The finite element method is used to carry out the investigation. The formulation is based on first order shear deformation theory and von Karman's assumptions are used to incorporate geometric nonlinearity. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. It is observed that for the smaller size cutout area there is no significant effect of cutout shape on load-deflection response of the laminate. It is also concluded that the cutout size has substantial influence on the buckling and postbuckling response of the laminate with elliptical-horizontal cutout, while this effect is observed to be the least in case of laminate with elliptical-vertical cutout.

  • This paper deals with the effect of ply orientation and control gain on tip transverse displacement of functionally graded beam layer for both active constrained layer damping (ACLD) and passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) system. The functionally graded beam is taken as host beam with a bonded viscoelastic layer in ACLD beam system. Piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite (PFRC) laminate is a constraining layer which acts as actuator through the velocity feedback control system. A finite element model has been developed to study actuation of the smart beam system. Fractional order derivative constitutive model is used for the viscoelastic constitutive equation. The control voltage required for ACLD treatment for various symmetric ply stacking sequences is highest in case of longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate over other ply stacking sequences. Performance of symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates on damping characteristics has been investigated for smart beam system using time and frequency response plots. Symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates significantly reduce the amplitude of the vibration over the longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate. The analysis reveals that the PFRC laminate can be used effectively for developing very light weight smart structures.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to observe the effect of laminate veneer on patient's teeth based on the manufacturing of laminate veneer restorations, which are produced by fabricating a ceramic cast body using IPS Empress, a pressure casting method and then forming the veneer by layering. Subsequently, we assessed the potential of its clinical application. Methods: This study discusses and preserves various treatment plans, such as diagnostic wax-up and treatment room diagnosis, for patients who visit the hospital to improve the appearance of teeth due to diastema of maxillary teeth, inexperienced resin filling, lack of esthetics, and external teeth. A ceramic cast body is constructed using IPS Empress, which is an effective and aesthetic restoration pressure casting method to restore the veneer with a laminate made by layering. Results: Compared with the preoperative state, the frontal view of the patient after the final restoration showed the formation of a natural smile line; the space between the central and lateral incisors was filled in synchronously with the adjacent teeth. In addition, the emergence profile is maintained by reducing the over-contour as much as possible. Conclusion: The patient's quality of life is improved by providing them with a satisfactory natural smile.
