Background: The olfactory mucosa (OM) is crucial for odorant perception in the main olfactory system. The terminal carbohydrates of glycoconjugates influence chemoreception in the olfactory epithelium (OE). Objectives: The histological characteristics and glycoconjugate composition of the OM of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo, Bos taurus coreae) were examined to characterize their morphology and possible functions during postnatal development. Methods: The OM of neonate and adult Korean native cattle was evaluated using histological, immunohistochemical, and lectin histochemical methods. Results: Histologically, the OM in both neonates and adults consists of the olfactory epithelium and the lamina propria. Additionally, using periodic acid Schiff and Alcian blue (pH 2.5), the mucus specificity of the Bowman's gland duct and acini in the lamina propria was determined. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that mature and immature olfactory sensory neurons of OEs express the olfactory marker protein and growth associated protein-43, respectively. Lectin histochemistry indicated that numerous glycoconjugates, including as N-acetylglucosamine, mannose, galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine, complex type N-glycan, and fucose groups, were expressed at varied levels in the different cell types in the OMs of neonates and adults at varying levels. According to our observations, the cattle possessed a well-developed olfactory system, and the expression patterns of glycoconjugates in neonatal and adult OMs varied considerably. Conclusions: This is the first study to describe the morphological assessment of the OM of Korean native cattle with a focus on lectin histochemistry. The findings suggest that glycoconjugates may play a role in olfactory chemoreception, and that their labeling properties may be closely related to OM development and maturity.
The yield shear strength of bolt connection in glass fiber reinforced glulam was predicted using a design-based equation, and was compared to the empirical yield shear strength. For the predicted equation, the mechanical properties of member (the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, shear modulus) was tested. The fracture toughness factor ($K_{ft}$) of glass fiber reinforced glulam was reflected to the revision of the design equation of bolted connection. The compressive strength properties to grain direction was influenced by annual ring angle and width of lamina. Compared with the revised yield shear strength of reinforced glulam, it was tended to be similar to the empirical yield shear strength on the diameter of bolt and the reinforcements. The revised yield shear strength from proposed formula of KBC was most appropriately matched in the bolt connection of the glass fiber reinforced glulam.

The present study was primarily carried out to characterize the properties of the spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) neurons that project from the upper cervical spinal segments to the midbrain. It was also investigated whether these neurons received convergent afferent inputs from other sources in addition to cervical inputs. Extracellular single unit recordings were made from neurons antidromically activated by stimulation of midbrain. Recording sites were located in lamina $I{\sim}VIII\;of\;C1{\sim}C3$ segments of spinal cord. Receptive field (RF) and response properties to mechanical stimulation were studied in 71 SMT neurons. Response profiles were classified into six groups: complex (Comp, n=9), wide dynamic range (WDR, n=16), low threshold (LT, n=5), high threshold (HT, n=6), deep/tap (Deep, n=10), and non- responsive (NR, n=25). Distributions of stimulation and recording sites were not significantly different between SMT groups classified upon their locations and/or response profiles. Mean conduction velocity of SMT neurons was $16.7{\pm}1.28\;m/sec$. Conduction velocities of SMTs recorded in superficial dorsal horn (SDH, n=15) were significantly slower than those of SMTs recorded in deep dorsal horn (DDH, n=18), lateral reticulated area (LRA, n=21), and intermediate zone and ventral horn (IZ/VH, n=15). Somatic RFs for SMTs in LRA and IZ/VH were significantly larger than those in SDH and DDH. Five SMT units (4 Comps and 1 HT) had inhibitory somatic RFs. About half (25/46) of SMT units have their RFs over trigeminal dermatome. Excitabilities of 5/12 cells and 9/13 cells were modulated by stimulation of ipsilateral phrenic nerve and vagus nerve, respectively. These results suggest that upper cervical SMT neurons are heterogenous in their function by showing a wide range of variety in location within the spinal gray matter, in response profile, and in convergent afferent input.
Alendronate sodium (ALS) is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate used for the treatment of different bone disorders. However, its adverse effect on oral soft tissue has been detected. Rutin (RUT) is natural flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This work aimed to investigate the possible effect of ALS on the tongue of adult male albino rats and to evaluate the possible protective role of RUT. Forty adult male albino rats were equally divided into four groups: group I (control), group II (RUT): Received RUT 50 mg/kg, group III (ALS): Received ALS 1 mg/kg, group IV (ALS+RUT):(ALS+RUT): Received ALS and RUT with the same doses as pervious groups. The drugs were given once daily for 5 weeks. Tongue specimens were taken and processed for light and scanning electron microscopic inspection. ALS treated group revealed structural changes in the tongue in the form of decrease in the height of the filiform papillae with blunt ends, marked atrophy in some papillae with areas of focal loss, loss of some epithelial cells, pyknotic nuclei and cytoplasmic vacuoles in some epithelial cells. The lamina propria showed inflammatory cellular infiltration with congested blood vessels. Statistically, there were highly significant decrease in the number of proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunopositive cells, area percentage of Bcl-2 immunoexpression and highly significant increase in the collagen content compared to control group. Administration of RUT with ALS minimizes these changes. RUT protected the rat tongue against the histological and immunohistochemical changes induced by ALS through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
In order to use Pitch pine (Pinus rigida Miller) as the material of the structural glued laminated timber, the effect of the amount of resin exudation due to storage time after the planning and the knot of the lamina were evaluated on the bonding properties of the glued board with resorcinol resin. For Pitch pine that was dried at high temperature ($120{\sim}95^{\circ}C$) and low temperature ($65{\sim}50^{\circ}C$), the flat sawn(tangential section) showed higher amount of resin exudation than the quarter sawn(radial section). And the low temperature drying wood showed higher resin exudation than the high temperature drying wood. The low and high temperature drying wood showed the highest amount of resin exudation on the 3rd day and 7th day, respectively and they were gradually decreased. However, there were no significant differences from 15 to 90 days. Adhesion performances were low until 2~3 days with high exudation of resin, but there were no significant differences after 15 days. Both high temperature and low temperature drying woods satisfied the Korean standard regardless of the storage time. The adhesive strengths of the laminating parts including knots were higher than those of KS criteria, but the wood failures were not satisfied the KS standard. Adhesive performances according to the laminating combinations (quarter sawn + quarter sawn, flat sawn + flat sawn, quarter sawn + flat sawn) were better than those of KS criteria in all laminating combinations in both high temperature and low temperature drying woods.
This study was carried out to investigate the strength and technical feasibility of arch type laminated lumber from the domestic small lumbers(Pinus densiflora S. et Z. and Larix kampferi Catt.). Arch type lumbers manufactured with different compositions of laminae. It was designed to improve the strength and stiffness. Strength S. rt Z. U;timate load Carr. laminated lumbers were higher than that of the Pinus densiflora S. et Z. Ultimate load of 7-ply laminated lumbers were 2 times higher than the 5-ply laminated lumbers. The strength of finger jointed lumbers were found to be about 15.8% less than that of the no joint lumber. One solution for this problem is to use veneer as face lamina. The veneer laminated lumbers was considerably greater than that of the non-veneer laminated lumbers. It was suggested that this small lumber may be a candidate for high valued product member to provide the proper combination of laminae.
Free vibration of cross-ply laminated plates using a higher-order shear deformation theory is studied. The arbitrary number of layers is oriented in symmetric and anti-symmetric manners. The plate kinematics are based on higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) and the vibrational behaviour of multi-layered plates are analysed under simply supported boundary conditions. The differential equations are obtained in terms of displacement and rotational functions by substituting the stress-strain relations and strain-displacement relations in the governing equations and separable method is adopted for these functions to get a set of ordinary differential equations in term of single variable, which are coupled. These displacement and rotational functions are approximated using cubic and quantic splines which results in to the system of algebraic equations with unknown spline coefficients. Incurring the boundary conditions with the algebraic equations, a generalized eigen value problem is obtained. This eigen value problem is solved numerically to find the eigen frequency parameter and associated eigenvectors which are the spline coefficients. The material properties of Kevlar-49/epoxy, Graphite/Epoxy and E-glass epoxy are used to show the parametric effects of the plates aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio, stacking sequence, number of lamina and ply orientations on the frequency parameter of the plate. The current results are verified with those results obtained in the previous work and the new results are presented in tables and graphs.
In this study, with the view to using effectively small and medium diameter Korean domestic woods as structural materials, cross-laminated woods were manufactured by using six species of Korean domestic softwoods and hardwoods, and bending creep properties were investigated for each species. The creep curves showed the shape of the exponential function plot, and the creep curves after 1 hour were able to estimate by fitting it to the power law. The initial and creep compliances of cross-laminated woods showed the higher values in wood species with a low density than in that with a high density. And by cross-laminating, the initial and creep compliances perpendicular to the grain considerably decreased, the extent of the decrease was found to be greater in creep deformation than in initial deformation. The creep anisotropies of cross-laminated woods were considerably decreased by cross-laminating. The relative creep of $C_{\bot}$ type composed of perpendicular-direction lamina in the faces decreased 0.59 - 0.64 times compared to that of $P_{\bot}$ type composed of perpendicular-direction laminae in all layers, and that for $C_{\parallel}$ type composed of parallel-direction laminae in the faces increased 1.5 - 1.6 times compared to that of $P_{\parallel}$ type composed of parallel-direction laminae in all layers.
Antidromically activated spinoreticular tract (SRT) cell units in the lumbosacral enlargement of ${\alpha}-chloralose$ anesthetized cats were classified as medial and lateral SRT units according to the location of their axonal termination. Identified SRT units were tested fer antidromic conduction velocity, laterality of their axonal projection, the location in spinal gray, peripheral receptive field, the response pattern to graded mechanichal stimulation and the responsiveness to $A{\delta}$ and C volley of the peripheral nerve. 1) The 59% of 34 medial SRT units were recorded in ipsilateral side to the antidromic stimulation site, but 60% of the 47 lateral SRT units projected to contralateral side. 2) Most of the medial SRT cells and rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM)-projecting lateral SRT cells were recorded in lamina VII & VIII. The LRN (lateral reticular nucleus)-projecting SRT cells, however, distributed through all the laminae except superficial ones (I & II). 3) The identified SRT units were classified as low theshold (LT), deep, high threshold (HT), wide dynamic range (WDR) cells, based on the response patterns to graded mechanical stimuli. The proportion of SRT units which receive noxious input was 37.5%, 25% and 75% in the medial, LRN-projecting and RVLM SRT group, respectively. 4) There was no significant difference in the mean conduction velocities between the 3 groups. But the deep cells had significantly higher velocity than that of the HT cells. The above results show that the peripheral inputs to the SRT units are different in the 3 groups: medial, LRN & RVLM SRT group. Especially in case of the SRT cells projecting to RVLM which is a probable candidate fur the integration center of various pressor reflexes such as somatosympathetic reflex, the noxious informations occupy higher proportion of input to them than in other groups. Therefore the noxious information transmitted through the lateral SRT destined for RVLM is expected to play a role in somatosymapthetic reflex.
This study was carried out to evaluate the shear bond strength and adhesive bond durability of structural glued laminated timber (glulam) manufactured with mixed species lumber of Korean red pine, Korean pine and Japanese larch, using resorcinol adhesive and water-based polymeric-isocyanate adhesive (WPI). Each board used as a glulam lamina was graded by visual inspection. The visual lumber grade of the all species was very low due to the large size and number of knots and the steep slope of grain. In view of the results, appropriate pruning, sawing and drying processes might be needed to produce high grade lamina lumber with small knot size and drying defect free. Shear bond strength of every tested glulam specimen ranged between 7.9 and $9.9N/mm^2$, and much higher than the Korean Standard (KS) for glulam shear bond strength, $7.1N/mm^2$. There was not much shear bond strength difference between wood/resorcinol and wood/WPI. The resorcinol adhesive bond durability exceeded KS requirements. However, delamination on the end-grain surfaces of WPI glulam submerged in both room temperature and boiling water severely occurred, and its durability did not meet KS requirements. Further investigations may be required, and special care should be taken, to ensure long service life of WPI glulam used for exterior application. Results of this study are expected to be useful for improvement of mechanical properties and structural performance of mixed species glulam.
