Korea began preserving and managing natural monuments in 1933 under the Japanese Colonization, but South and North Korea had to establish natural monument management policies separately because of the division after the Korean Independence. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the natural monument designations of South and North Koreas between 1933 and 2005 to introduce advanced polices for Oneness-Korea. The following are the results: According to data of December 2005, South Korea has 358 and North Korea has 474 natural monuments. North Korea has 116 more natural monuments than South Korea. In addition, over half of South Korea's designations are plants, whereas North Korea's designations are relatively well-balanced. Both South and North Korea designate plants(mostly trees) that are old and large. However, South Korea emphasizes the historical value of village forests, contrary to economic value in North Korea. Also, North Korea preserves many traditional fruit trees which have not been well-preserved in South Korea. As for animals, South Korea designates migratory wild animals by type and not by region to protect them at a national level, whereas North Korea designates the specific habitats of each type of wild animal. In addition, North Korea protects each region's cattle and chickens to preserve native traits of domesticated animals. Geologically, North Korea preserves 18 hot springs and 11 springs, whereas South Korea has none. Geographically, North Korea preserves 81 waterfalls, lakes, etc. In the conclusion, advanced natural monument management of South and North Korea is necessary to achieve effective preservation of natural monuments.
The purpose of this study is to address the progress of the heat island phenomenon and the scheme to decrease in heat island phenomenon through analysis of micro-climates according to land use and make a plan to construct wind ways. The result is: 1) Analysis of temperature and humidity at 6 spots for 24 hours showed that heat island phenomenon was considerably intense around center road of Gwangju and can be mild through making lakes and green zones. 2) Analysis of the direction and velocity of the wind at 2 spots for 24 hours showed that the direction of the wind at the center of Gwangju was SSW(South-South-West) and average velocity of the it was $1.2{\sim}1.5\;m/s$. To make the inflow of the low-temperature air current from Mt. Mudeung into the city through Gwangju river, efficient management of Gwangju riverside parks should be considered for Gwangju river itself to be wind way. 3) Analysis of mobile temperature measurement on 3 courses for 24 hours showed that the low-temperature air current of Mt. Mudeung and a micro-climate of Gwangju river can lighten thermal storage phenomena of the city in that the temperature was lowest at Gwangju riverside. These outcome is from a day term measurement. So, to figure out accurate condition of heat island phenomenon in Gwangju City, it is needed to have long term measurements and accumulation of those information.
This study was carried out to select the utilizable vegetations for the stabilization of slopes and river banks, landscape creation and water quality cleansing in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, 4 species were investigated for their survival and growth characteristics in the complete and partly flooding conditions with various flooding periods. The results are as followings; Acorus calamus var. angustatus showed the highest flooding tolerance based on survival rate and growth condition. Equisetum hyemale, Acorus gramineus and Salix gracilistyla followed after Acorus calamus var. angustatus in the order of flooding tolerance. Particularly, A. calamus var. angustatus and E. hyemale showed higher survival rate and grew well even when they were completely submerged in the water up to 120 days. As they were partially submerged longer, they grew better. This ascertained that they had strong flooding tolerance. When A. gramineus were completely submerged in the water, their growth was disturbed but they did not die in the complete submergence up to 120 days. A. gramineus had a small growth disturbance and showed the highest vitality of leaves among the species. Though S. gracilistyla showed somewhat low growth rate in the complete water submergence and died in 90 days, it also can grow back to normal with some changes of water level.

Blastomycosis is a systemic pyogranulomatous disease that is caused by a thermally dimorphic fungus, Blastomyces dermatitidis. it's the disease is endemic in the south-eastern and south central states of the USA, which border the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, the mid-western states and Canadian provinces bordering the Great Lakes as well as in a small area of New York and Canada adjacent to the St. Lawrence River. We encountered a case of blastomycosis, representing as a pulmonary manifestation after traveling around a nonendemic area and report it with a brief review of the relevant literature.

The rate of sewage treatment in South Korea was 68% in the late 1999. Sewage treatment is mostly made near big cities such as Seoul and Busan, and it is little in rural areas. Wastewater from households goes to streams directly without treatment in rural areas and pollutes streams. It is necessary to improve the progress for treatment of nutrients such as N and P which cause eutrophication in streams and lakes, because sewage treatment system in South Korea focuses on treatment of basic organic matters. Therefore it will contribute to improve discharged water quality if small sewage treatment systems by aquatic plants and microbes are introduced to rural areas where are not connected to local sewage treatment facility. This experiment was conducted to find out the best way using aquatic plants and microbes to purify wastewater from households through individual sewage treatment system. Phragmites communis, Iris pseudoacorus, Acorus calamus var. angustatus, Typha orientalis and Oenanthe javanica were used for this experiment. BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P were analyzed following standard methods for wastewater. The result shows that wastewater was roughly purified through pebbles and sands, and highly purified through aquatic plants and microbes especially in T-N and T-P. Iris pseudoacorus is the most effective in reduction of COD and BOD level. This system will work even in winter when plants die because microbes will be still working.

This study is to enhance the provincial leisure plans through various programs and infrastructure facilities and to establish a network of natural leisure areas in Gyeonggi-do. According to the result, first, in terms of analyzing the locations of natural leisure areas by types, the rest of urban parks is formed in the Capital area outside Seoul as centering around the central area. Moreover, with regard to the rest of forest and the rest of natural ecology learning, the area of the detention exceeds the total area of Gyeonggi-do. The rest of valleys and swamps showed a dotted pattern of the detention area while the rest of tideland and fishing village experience indicated a distribution of the detention area along the West Coast as an axis. Second, according to result of analyzing the accessibility of natural leisure areas by types, the rest of valleys and swamps showed the highest accessibility among the natural leisure areas : the rest of natural ecology learning had the medium level of accessibility; the rest of forest indicated the lowest accessibility. Therefore, it is necessary to create more leisure areas concerning the futures demands. In addition, they should be constructed in the places adjacent to the urban district area exhibiting higher usability and accessibility. In the places where there are many natural leisure area with higher utility, management plans should be deliberated as well. Based on the result of analyzing the rest of valleys and swamps and the rest of tideland and fishing village experience, it was found that the natural leisure area should improve the quality of water intensively and hydrophile property and create hydrophilic spaces. The development of natural leisure areas need to be carried out under the principle of environmental protection while considering historic sites and nearby rivers and lakes. Moreover, water leisure programs should be developed actively as well with further utilization of water resources in order to enhance the usability of natural leisure.

Water waves are generated mainly by winds in open seas and large lakes. They carry a significant amount of energy from winds into near-shore region. Thereby they significantly contribute to the regional hydrodynamics and transport process, producing strong physical, geological and environmental impact on coastal environment and on human activities in the coastal area. Furthermore an accurate prediction of the hydrodynamic effects due to wave interaction with offshore structures is a necessary requirement in the design, protection and operation of such structures. In the present paper surface and internal waves scattering by thin surface-piercing and bottom-standing vertical barriers in a two-layer fluid is analyzed in two-dimensions within the context of linearized theory of water waves. The reflection coefficients for surface and internal waves are computed and analyzed in various cases. It is found that wave reflection is strongly dependent on the interface location and the fluid density ratio apart from the barrier geometry.

This study was aimed to propose La(III)-zeolite composite which can effectively and simultaneously remove ammonia and phosphate in confined water bodies such as lakes and ponds. The optimum ratio of La(III):zeolite for the simultaneous removal of ammonia and phosphate was 0.0048 La(III) g:1 zeolite g. The drying temperature of La(III)-zeolite composite severely affected phosphate adsorption showing optimum condition at room temperature. It was revealed that the optimum dosage of La(III)-zeolite composite was 4.052 g/L at adsorption time of 90 min. The presence of alkalinity in aqueous solution brought positive effect on phosphate adsorption. Detachment of La(III) from La(III)-zeolite composite, which was dried at room temperature, was not observed in aquous solution. It indicates that La(III)-zeolite composite could effectively block phosphate released from sediment.

More than half of the nonpoint sources of polluting water occur in cultivating farmlands in rural areas. Agricultural nonpoint sources are discharged from large areas of farmlands, making it difficult to collect or treat pollutants. Farmland source management is known to be the most effective, and preventive management by improving farming methods is the key to reduce nonpoint pollution. At present, more than 30% of the pollutants flowing into the rivers and lakes are nonpoint pollutants caused by agricultural activities. As a countermeasure, it is more preferable to develop and apply optimal farming management techniques for agricultural nonpoint pollution management basically than to apply existing water quality management techniques. Because of the characteristics of nonpoint source pollution, it is necessary to manage farmlands in rural areas, so the willingness and competence of the residents is most important. The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the process of changing the cognition of residents through capacity education and survey for nonpoint pollution management in rural areas. This study conducted intensive resident competency education and examined the process of changing resident awareness through three surveys. As a result of this study, it was found that continuous education and activities for rural non-point pollution management are necessary for raising awareness of residents and managing non-point pollution effectively, showing possibility of change residents' perception.
Lepomis macrochirus from the family Centrarchidae, commonly known as Bluegill sunfish, is an introduced freshwater fish in Korea that thrives in lakes, ponds, reservoirs and rivers. Since its introduction into Korea in 1969, Lepomis macrochirus has rapidly dispersed out and increased in number almost all over the freshwater ecosystems in Korea. Consequently this species causes a severe ecological problem, threatening native fishes due to its omnivorous foraging behaviors upon fish juveniles and many freshwater invertebrates. To address population genetic structure of L. macrochirus, 74 fish samples from 10 populations were collected and compared for their mitochondrial D-loop control region. As the result we found that the genetic diversity of L. macrochirus is extremely low such as resulting only four haplotypes with a few nucleotide differences among them. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that the source of population genetic variation is largely retained in the comparisons among individuals within populations, while it is relatively low with slight significance at the highest hierarchical group. This distribution pattern differs from what is expected when biogeography is under the influence of natural geographic barriers such as mountain ranges in Korea. Instead the result is accord with the influential role of random spreading events facilitated by local people for aquaculture and fishing, and subsequent dispersals since its single point of introduction into Korea.
