  • When abnormal taste and odor were detected in the tap water of the North-Han river watershed during the dry season in late 2011, excessive nutrients with algal growth in the Lake Uiam and weather factors were considered to be among its causes. The nutrients, in particular, originated from domestic sewage in the Chuncheon area. This study was conducted to investigate relations between the algal growth in the Lake Uiam and the contribution of nutrients from public sewage treatment works (PSTWs) in Chuncheon city, and based on this to analyze the environmental impact. Nutrients in the Lake Uiam have already been accumulated to the level of eutrophication. Even in winter, the conditions in the lake such as retention time and water temperature were favorable to boost algal growth. After phosphorus treatment processes were introduced, the PSTWs in the Lake Uiam watershed were able to reduce the total phosphorus loads by 43%. The algal concentrations in the Lake Uiam also dropped by about 7%. The nitrogen treatment efficiencies in the PSTWs, on the other hand, remained almost the same after the introduction of the phosphorus treatment processes. To solve these problems more efficiently, it is necessary to develop management strategies for the upstream area of the Lake Uiam and set plans to improve nitrogen treatment operation and management for the PSTWs in Chuncheon.

  • Structure and dynamics of the phytoplankton communities of Uiam lake, Korea, was investigated. In the Uiam lake four dominant species were found Oscillatoria limosa at Chuncheon City side, O. tenuis at Soyang river side, Melosira italica at south-east side and Asterionella gracillima at west side of the lake. By cluster analysis, based on the similarity index and dissimilarity index, the phytoplanktons in this lake were grouped into three communities; i.e. Oscillatoria, Melosira and Asterionella community. And also the same groups obtained by the cluster analysis were recognized by polar ordination technique along polluted degree gradient. It is clear that oscillatoria community occur in polluted site, Asterionella community in unpolluted site and Melosira community in less polluted site.

  • In this study, the characteristics of algae mitigation according to dam operation were quantitatively analyzed for Uiam Lake, where the Chuncheon Dam is located upstream of the main stream, Uiam Dam is located downstream, and Soyang Dam is located in the tributary stream. Nine dam operation scenarios were applied to the event of the summer of 2018 (at that time an algae alert occurred) using the EFDC model, which is capable of calculating three-dimensional hydrodynamics and water quality levels such as those associated with chlorophyll-a. The dam operation scenarios were set to generate a flushing effect via discharges in the form of pulse waves from the upstream dams and by lowering the water level at the downstream dam. At Uiam Lake, the flushing effect was different depending on the operation of the dam, and the amount of algae reduction at each point was different owing to topographic characteristics and the different base water temperatures from BukHan River and Soyang River. With regard to a point located on the left bank, it was predicted that the peak level of chlorophyll-a would be reduced by approximately 50 % or more upon pulsed discharge at 50 m3/s for three days at Soyang Dam. However, for the right bank, the amount of discharge from Soyang Dam had little effect on algae mitigation. Therefore, an appropriate dam operation could be effective for algae mitigation at specific points in the water body where large dams exist upstream and downstream, such as at Uiam Lake, in an emergency situation in which algal blooms rapidly.

  • The nitrogen assimilation rate of nitrogenous nutrients by reservior phytoplankton was masured in the in situ condition in the euphotic layer of Lakes Soyang, Chuncheon and Uiam located on the upper reaches of the North Han River System in August, 1983, Korea. The assimilation rate of ammonia, nitrate and urea nitrogen in surface water was 13, 2 and $13{\mu}g$ at. $N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}(12:10~18:15)^{-1}$ in Lake Soyang, 325, 27 and $59{\mu}g$ at. $N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}(12:30~18:30)^{-1}$ in Lake Chuncheon, and 174, 12 and $45{\mu}g$ at. $N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}(12:30~19:30)^{-1}$ in Lake Uiam. Ammonia and urea were perferntially utilized by reservoir phytoplankton. The dark/light ratios of nitrate assimilation were much lower than those of ammonia and urea assimilation of nitrate showed little contribution. The primary productuin was estimated as 59mg $C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and 6.9mg $N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ in Lake Spyang, 217mg C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and 26mg N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ in Lake Chuncheon, and 110mg C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and 13mg N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ in Lake Uiam, with production ratios of 8.6, 8.4 and 8,4, respectively. The turnover time o ammonia and urea in the upper euphotic layer was 2 to 47 days and 4 to 38 days, respectively. Nitrate required much longer periods. In the euphotic layer of reservoirs, ammonia and urea played signigicant roles in the biogeoKDICical nitrogen metabolism.

  • In order to determine the current infection status of pond smelts, Hypomesus olidus, and other freshwater fishes with trematode metacercariae, a total of 4,861 pond smelts and 18 other freshwater fishes, collected from the Soyang and Uiam Lakes in Gangwon-do, the Unam Lake in Jeollabuk-do, the Jangseong Lake in Jeollanam-do, the Uirim-ji (lake) in Chungcheongbuk-do, and the Andong Lake in Gyeongsangbuk-do, were individually digested with 1 % pepsin-HCI and examined under a dissecting microscope. In all pond smelts caught from the 6 lakes, we were unable to detect any known human infectious trematode metacercariae in Korea. However, in other freshwater fishes, such as, Squalidus japonicus coreanus (Unam Lake), and Zacco platypus (Jangseong Lake) and Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis (Jangseong Lake), metacercariae of human-infecting trematodes, i.e., Clonorchis sinensis and Metagonimus sp. were detected, respectively.
