Northeastward drifts of massive Sargassum patches were observed in the East China Sea (ECS) and Yellow Sea (YS) by the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) in May 2017. Coverage of the brown macroalgae patches was the largest ever recorded in the ECS and YS. Three-dimensional circulation modeling and Lagrangian particle tracking simulations were conducted to reproduce drifting trajectories of the macroalgae patches. The trajectories of the macroalgae patches were controlled by winds as well as surface currents. A windage (leeway) factor of 1% was chosen based on sensitivity simulations. Southerly winds in May 2017 contributed to farther northward intrusion of the brown macroalgae into the YS. Although satellite observation and numerical modeling have their own limitations and associated uncertainties, the two methods can be combined to find the best estimate of Sargassum patch trajectories. When satellites were unable to capture all patches because of clouds and sea fog in the ECS and YS, the Lagrangian particle tracking model helped to track and restore the missing patches in satellite images. This study suggests that satellite monitoring and numerical modeling are complementary to ensure accurate tracking of macroalgae patches in the ECS and YS.

In this paper, three-dimensional optimal evasive maneuver patterns for air-to-surface attack missiles against proportionally navigated anti-air defense missiles were investigated. An interception error of the defense missile is produced by an evasive maneuver of the attack missile. It is assumed that the defense missiles are continuously launched during the flight of attack missile. The performance index to be minimized is then defined as the negative square integral of the interception errors. The direct parameter optimization technique based on SQP and a co-evolution method based on the augmented Lagrangian formulation are adopted to get the attack missile's optimal evasive maneuver patterns. The overall shape of the resultant optimal evasive maneuver is represented as a deformed barrel-roll.

In this paper, we develope a dispersion model based on the Generalized Langevin Model. Thomson's well-mixed condition is the well known criterion to determine particle dispersion. But, it has 'non-uniqueness problem'. To resolve this, we adopt a turbulent model which is a new approach in this field of study. Our model was greatly simplified under the self-similarity condition, leaving model only two model constants $C_{0}$ and ${\gamma}$$_{5}$ that control the dispersion and spin which measures rotational property of the Lagrangian particle trajectory. We investigated the sign of spin as well as magnitude by using the Direct Numerical Simulation. Model calculations were performed on the neutrally stable boundary layer flow. We found that spin has weak effect on the particle dispersion but it shows the significant effect on the horizontal flux compared to the zero-spin model.

A fine carbon fibers dispersion model is implemented to calculate the scattering range and ground level concentration of carbon fibers emitted at certain altitudes of atmospheric boundary layer. This carbon fibers dispersion model was composed by coupling a commonly used atmospheric dispersion model and an atmospheric boundary layer model. The atmospheric boundary layer model, applying the Monin-Obukov Similarity Rule obtained from measurement input data at ground level, was used to create the atmospheric boundary layer structure. In the atmospheric dispersion model, the Lagrangian Particle Model and the Markov Process were applied to calculate the trajectory of scattered carbon fibers relative to gravity and aerodynamic force, as well as carbon fibers specification.
Variations in ambient atmospheric carbon monoxide(CO) observed at an inland mining site in the Indo-Gangetic plains, Jaduguda ($22^{\circ}38'N$, $86^{\circ}21'E$, 122m MSL, ~75 km away from the coast of the Bay of Bengal) during the Tsunami of 26 December 2004 were monitored. CO mixing ratio over this site was measured using a non-dispersive infrared analyzer (Monitor Europe Model 9830 B). Back trajectory analysis data obtained using NOAA Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) Model was also used for this study. Variations in CO mixing ratio at a coastal site, Thiruvananthapuram ($8^{\circ}29'N$, $76^{\circ}57'E$, located ~2 km from the Arabian Sea coast) have also been investigated using CO data retrieved from the Measurement Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument. Ground-based measurements indicated abnormal variations in CO mixing ratio at Jaduguda from 25 December 2004 evening (previous day of the Tsunami). MOPITT CO data showed an enhancement in CO mixing ratio over Thiruvananthapuram on the Tsunami day. Back trajectory analyses over Thiruvananthapuram and Jaduguda for a period of 10 days from $21^{st}$ to $30^{th}$ December 2004 depicted that there were unusual vertical movements of air from high altitudes from 25 December 2004 evening. CO as well as the back trajectory analyses data showed that the variations in the wind regimes and consequently wind driven transport are the most probable reasons for the enhancement in CO observed at Jaduguda and Thiruvananthapuram during the Tsunami.
A record-breaking high surface air temperature of 41.0℃ was observed on 1 August 2018 at Hongcheon, South Korea. In this study, to quantitatively determine the formation mechanism of this extremely high surface air temperature, particularly considering the contributions of the foehn and the foehnlike wind, observational data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model were utilized. In the backward trajectory analysis, trajectories of 100 air parcels were released from the surface over Hongcheon at 1600 LST on 1 August 2018. Among them, the 47 trajectories (38 trajectories) are tracked back above (below) heights of 1.4 km above mean sea level at 0900 LST 31 July 2018 and are defined as upper (lower) routes. Lagrangian energy budget analysis shows that for the upper routes, adiabatic heating (11.886 × 103 J kg-1) accounts for about 77% of the increase in the thermal energy transfer to the air parcels, while the rest (23%) is diabatic heating (3.650 × 103 J kg-1). On the other hand, for the lower routes, adiabatic heating (6.111 × 103 J kg-1) accounts for about 49% of the increase, the rest (51%) being diabatic heating (6.295 × 103 J kg-1). Even though the contribution of the diabatic heating to the increase in the air temperature rather varies according to the routes, the contribution of the diabatic heating should be considered. The diabatic heating is caused by direct heating associated with surface sensible heat flux and heating associated with the turbulent mixing. This mechanism is the Type 4 foehn described in Takane and Kusaka (2011). It is concluded that Type 4 foehn wind occurs and plays an important role in the extreme event on 1 August 2018.
To realistically simulate fluid, the Navier-Stokes equations are generally used. Solving these Navier-Stokes equations on the Eulerian framework, the non-linear advection terms invoke heavy computation and thus Semi-Lagrangian methods are used as an approximated way of solving them. In the Semi-Lagrangian methods, the locations of advection sources are traced and the physical values at the traced locations are interpolated. In the case of Stam's method, there are relatively many chances of numerical losses, and thus there have been efforts to correct these numerical errors. In most cases, they have focused on the numerical interpolation processes, even simultaneously using particle-based methods. In this paper, we propose a new approach to reduce the numerical losses, through improving the tracing method during the advection calculations, without any modifications on the Eulerian framework itself. In our method, we trace the grids with the velocities which will let themselves to be moved to the current target position, differently from the previous approaches, where velocities of the current target positions are used. From the intuitive point of view, we adopted the simple physical observation: the physical quantities at a specific position will be moved to the new location due to the current velocity. Our method shows reasonable reduction on the numerical losses during the smoke simulations, finally to achieve real-time processing even with enhanced realities.

The cavitation noise of a hydrofoil is measured in a cavitation tunnel. It is exhibited that the noise level sharply increases with the inception of cavitation and increase with the decrease of the cavitation number until a moderate cavitation number. Below the cavitation number, the trend is reversed, which may be resulted from the interference effect between cavities. The trajectory of bubble is predicted by using the Lagrangian method. Meanwhile the size of the bubble is predicted based on the Kirkwood-Bethe approximation. The predicted results for the bubble size are compared with the experimental results. It is shown that the numerical method predicts the time history of cavities fairly well.
In this paper we are interested in the control of Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) using the Passivity Based Control (PBC). This work presents a solution to the problem of DFIM that requires a state observer. The proposed method shows very important advantages for nonlinear systems, especially in the trajectory tracking to achieve the needed DFIM performance. In the obtained results, the passivity provides high efficiency in DFIM based system, namely in its stability and robustness. An improvement behavior has been observed in comparison to the results given by the RST controller.

This study is to predict the lateral dispersion of the particles with time in a vertical pipe. Particle is released downward and located in the center of a pipe through which stationary, homogeneous turbulent air is flowing. We assume that gas turbulence velocities have a Gaussian probability density distribution and the presence of particle is not to alter turbulent structures. Particle trajectory is computed by numerically integrating the particle Lagrangian equation of motion, with a random sampling to determine the fluctuating air velocity experienced by each particle, which considered inertia effect and crossing-trajectories effect. The result shows characterestics of particle dispersion according to flow field condition and droplet size by using the parameters and scales, which expressed characterestics of flow field and particle. Predictions agree reasonably with experimental data.
