  • Lactarius and Lactifluus are milkcaps that are characterized by the secretion of latex. These two genera are part of a globally distributed cosmopolitan group of ectomycorrhizal fungi that is an important food resource in various ecosystems. Recently, the taxonomy of Lactarius and Lactifluus has been revised based on molecular phylogenetics. Despite the importance of these taxa, Korean species of both genera are poorly understood. In an effort to describe milkcap species that are indigenous to Korea, a long-term study has been initiated. During a recent survey, eight species of milkcaps that were previously unrecorded in Korea were detected based on morphological observation and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region: five Lactarius species (Lactarius atromarginatus, L. austrotorminosus, L. kesiyae, L. tabidus, and L. vietus) and three Lactifluus species (Lactifluus acicularis, Lf. pilosus, and Lf. pinguis). Detailed morphological descriptions and phylogenetic relationships of these species are provided in this article.

  • Ectomycorrhizal fungi in a pine stand were identified by collecting mushrooms from forest floor of a 24-year-old Pinus $rigida-rigida\;{\times}\;taeda$ stand in Suweon from late June to early November of 1981. Of over 70 different mushrooms collected, 26 were identified by species names and 20 were classified into genus categories. A total of 17 different fungal genera were represented in this pine stand. Most commonly observed mushrooms belonged to the genera of Russula, Lactarius, Boletus and Amanita. The genus Hebeloma and following four species are listed as new genus and species, respectively, which have not been reported previously in Korea: Inocybe fastigiata, Phylloporus bellus, Lactarius glaucescens, and Lactarius subvellereus. The Phylloporus bellus has been incorrectly identified in Korea as Phylloporus rhodoxanthus.

  • Of about 70 different mushrooms (potential ectomycorrhizal fungi) collected from forest floor of a 24-year-old Pinus rigida rigida ${\times}$ taeda stand, four species have not been reported in Korea. They are Inocybe fastigiata, Phylloporus bellus, Lactarius glaucescens, and Lactarius subvellereus. The Phylloporus bellus has been incorrectly identified in Korea as Phylloporus rhodoxanthus. Taxonomic descriptions for these four mushrooms are reported in this paper. The collections cited are deposited in the herbarium of Institute of Agricultural science O.R.D.

  • Turkey has a very rich fungal flora due to its phytogeographical position. The screening of chemical content and active substances of mushrooms becomes an important subject not only for Turkey but also for all over the world. In the last decade, Analyses on phytochemical and biological activity of fungi have gradually increased as a result of improvement in the number and quality of facilities. In the scope of the present research, four medicinal mushrooms; Morchella elata, Lactarius volemus, Cantharellus cibarius and Tricholoma terreum were analyzed for their fatty acid compositions and antioxidant capacities. The fungal species have been found with unsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid ratio of 6.73 for Morchella elata, 4.12 for Lactarius volemus, 5.21 for Cantharellus cibarius, 3.73 for Tricholama terrum. In addition, the concentration of malondialdehyde which was an indicator of lipid peroxidation was also determined in these species. According to the results, free radical scavenging activity of Morchella elata and Lactarius volemus were found higher than the other species. Any of the mushroom species investigated were found having very high metal chelating activity. The results showed that the extract of Morchella elata and Lactarius volemus exhibited significant antioxidant activities. Hence, the mushrooms have a potential to be a natural antioxidant in food industries as antioxidant agent.

  • Mushrooms were collected at Mt. Gyeryong, Mt. Chilgab, Mt. Ducyu, Mt. Chiri, Mt Songri and the regions of Chungnam Province for 15 months from July, 1983 to October, 1984. They were classified into 19 species, four varieties and one form of Lactarius. These species were grouped into six sections according to Hesler and Smith. Of these Lactarius, nine species and four varieties appeared to be newly found ones.

  • Ectomycorrhizal fungi in Pinus $rigida{\times}taeda$ and poplar stands (Populus $alba{\times}glandulosa$ and others) were collected in 1981 and 1982. A total of 39 mushrooms representing 15 genera were identified from the pine stand, and the major genera were Amanita, Lactarius, Russula, Laccaria, and Boletus. From the poplar stands 16 mushrooms representing 8 genera were identified and 13 of them were the same found in the pine stand. Amanita, Russula, Laccaria, and Leccinum are the major genera in the poplar stands. A single species of Boletus was found in large number in pine and poplar stands. Lactarius was not observed in the poplar stands, while Leccinum was not found in the pine stand. Cantharellus lutescens which has not been reported in Korea was collected in the pine stand.

  • In order to isolate constituents of Lactarius piperatus$(F_{R.})$ S.F. $G_{RAY}$, the fresh carpophore was homogenized with ethanol in a blendor, stored for three years and subsequently extracted with ethanol. From the concentrated ethanol solution, a mixture of compounds was precipitated, from which a white needle crystal, named 'gultorin', $(mp.160{\sim}162^{\circ})$ was obtained. The physical and chemical characteristics of gultorin were determined.
