The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), is one of the world's premier test reactors for providing the capability for studying the effects of intense neutron and gamma radiation on reactor materials and fuels. The physical configuration of the ATR, a 4-leaf clover shape, allows the reactor to be operated at different power levels in the comer 'lobes' to allow for different testing conditions for multiple simultaneous experiments. The combination of high flux (maximum thermal neutron fluxes of 1E15 neutrons per square centimeter per second and maximum fast [E>1.0 MeV] neutron fluxes of 5E14 neutrons per square centimeter per second) and large test volumes (up to 122 cm long and 12.7 cm diameter) provide unique testing opportunities. The current experiments in the ATR are for a variety of test sponsors - US government, foreign governments, private researchers, and commercial companies needing neutron irradiation services. There are three basic types of test configurations in the ATR. The simplest configuration is the sealed static capsule, which places the capsule in direct contact with the primary coolant. The next level of experiment complexity is an instrumented lead experiment, which allows for active control of experiment conditions during the irradiation. The most complex experiment is the pressurized water loop, in which the test sample can be subjected to the exact environment of a pressurized water reactor. For future research, some ATR modifications and enhancements are currently planned. This paper provides more details on some of the ATR capabilities, key design features, experiments, and future plans.
This paper is concerned with an experimental investigation about tractive performance of a tracked vehicle on extremely soft soil. A tracked vehicle model with principal dimensions of $0.9\;m(L)\;{\times}\;0.75\;m(B)\;{\times}\;0.4\;m(H)$ and the weight of 167 kg was constructed with a pair of driving chain links driven by two AC-servo motors. The tracks are configured with detachable grousers with variable span. Deep seabed was simulated by means of bentonite-water mixture in a soil bin of $6.0\;m(L)\;{\times}\;3.7\;m(B)\;{\times}\;0.7\;m(H)$. Slip of vehicle and driving torque of motor were measured with respect to experimental variables; grouser span, grouser chevron angle, driving speed, drawbar-pull weight, position of center-of-gravity and weight. $L_8$ orthogonal array is adopted for DOE (Design Of Experiment). The effects of experiment variables on traction performance are evaluated.
New designed floating breakwater made of Polyethelener with considering the introduction of new material for being harmony with environment and stability of the floater is developed for a marine ranching. Model experiment in order to test its capability is performed for the regular and irregular waves in ocean engineering basin. Good capability to break the incident wave within the 6 second of period and 1 m of height is shown. Breaking efficiency for long period wave is not so good in regular and irregular wave. The results of this study will contribute to the design and construction of the floating breakwater.

The cavity oscillation with swirling flow in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation. Several types of fluctuation were observed in the experiment, including the cavitation surge caused by the diffuser effect and the vortex precession by the swirling flow. Both cavitation surge and vortex precession were simulated by CFD. Detailed flow structure was examined through flow visualization and CFD.
This paper presents an experimental investigation about visualization of bulging development of geosynthetic-encased stone column (GESC) based on the digital image correlation (DIC) technique and transparent soil. Visual model tests on GESC and ordinary stone column (OSC) were carried out. In order to delete the warping effect resulting from transparent soil and experiment setup, a modification for experiment results was performed. The bulging development process of the GESC and the displacement field of the surrounding soil were measured. By comparing with the existing experimental and theoretical results, it demonstrates that the model test system developed for studying the continuous bulging development of GESC is suitable. The current test results show that the bulging depth of GESC ranges from 1.05 to 1.40 times the diameter of GESC. The influence depth of GESC bulging on surrounding soil displacement is 0~3 the times diameter of GESC.
In order to understand the mechanisms of conversion between different algal dominance, an experiment was performed in a greenhouse from 22 June to 10 July 2011. The experiment included a treatment group subjected to three instances of nutrient enrichment and a control with no nutrient enrichment. The initial water was dominated by Ankistrodesmus of Chlorophyta. The average water temperature at 08:30 h and 14:00 h during the experiment was $31.6^{\circ}C$ and $34.6^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results showed that the total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved total nitrogen (DTN), dissolved total phosphorus (DTP), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations in the treatment were significantly higher than in the control (P < 0.05). However, the TN/TP and DTN/DTP in the control was higher than in the treatment (P < 0.05). The dominant algae in the control did not change during the experiment, while the dominant algae in the treatment switched to Planktothrix of Cyanophyta on day 9. The chlorophyll a (Chl-a), wet weight of all algae, wet weight of Cyanophyta, and percentage of Cyanophyta in the control were all significantly lower than in the treatment (P < 0.05). Amounts of zooplankton, especially rotifers, were present at the end of the experimental period. The density of rotifers between the control and treatment was not significantly different (P > 0.05), while the copepod density in the treatment was higher than in the control (P < 0.05). We conclude that green algae dominance quickly switches to cyanobacteria dominance after nutrient enrichment in a greenhouse with elevated temperature.

Electron temperature and plasma density in coplanar alternating-current plasma display panels (AC-PDP's) have been experimentally investigated in accordance with discharge time by a micro-probe in this experiment. The resolution of a step mortor to move in micro-Langmuir probe is 10um.[1-3] The used gas in this experiment is He-Ne-Xe (4%) mixure gas. And sustain voltage is 320V which is above of firing voltage for degradation. The electron temperature and plasma density can be obtained from current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of micro Langmuir probe, in which negative to positive bias voltage was applied to the probe. And Efficiency is calculated by formula related discharge power and light emission. Those experiments operated as various discharge time ($0{\sim}72$ Hours). As a result of this experiment, Electron Temperature was increased from 2eV to 5eV after discharge running time of 20 hours and saturates beyond 20 hours. The plasma density is inversely proportional to the square root of electron temperature. So the plasma density was decreased from $1.8{\times}10^{12}cm^{-3}$ to $8{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$ at above discharge running time. And the Efficiency was reduced to 70% at 60hours of discharge running time.
This study was carried out to verificate the possibility of using the laboratory setting psycho-acoustic experiment compared with the field and to delineate the appropriate indices in evaluating the Noisiness of road traffic noise by means of psycho-acoustic method. Reviewing the typical patterns of traffic noises depending upon the shapes ad conditions of the road, the road traffic noises in several representative points in the major residential areas in Kwangju city were recorded and reproduced with the noise levels modified in various steps. With these 20 sound sources, psycho-acoustic experiments in the laboratory were performed on 11 volunteer subjects. And then, psycho-acoustic experiments in the real field were performed on 10 volunteer subjects to compare the results of the laboratory experiment, the results are summerized as follows : 1. The psycho-acoustic experiments in the laboratory elicited the data well matching with those obtained in the field, resulting in even higher corelation levels. This indicates that the field assessement of responses to the noise can be replaced by the evaluatioin in the laboratory settings which render many variables easily controlled and that the responses of the residents to the noise can be easily predicted in the laboratory by applying this method. 2. Also among the complex indices, such as Noise Pollution Level or Annoyance Index high correlations were detected. On the other hand, low corelations were noted among Traffic Noise Index. 3. Highly significant correlations were found among the direct indices such as Leq, L\sub 10\, On the other hand, low correlations were detected among L\sub 50\.

This paper presents the multi-objective optimisation of an Inductive Coupled Power Transfer (ICPT) device. A setup as complicated as the one at hand in this paper is extremely hard to model analytically. To acquire some knowledge about the influence of the geometric factors, a sensitivity analysis is first performed using design of experiment (DoE) and finite-element modelling (FEM). It allows validating that the choice of the free factors is relevant. This being done, the optimisation itself is performed using a genetic algorithm (GA), with two objectives and a strict functioning constraint.
