This paper demonstrates both theoretically and empirically that there are industry-specific factors as well as the cyclical ones that affect quit and layoff incidences and that the industry-specific effects are positively correlated between the two incidences across industries while the cyclical effects are negatively correlated over time. We first set up a theoretical model to analyze how its parameters affect quits and layoffs through the corresponding change in the optimal wage for the employer and the worker, and then derive from the theoretical separation behaviors the two testable hypotheses - that quits and layoffs are positively correlated to each other across industries, and that quits move procyclically while layoffs move countercyclically. We analyze the two sets of data, BLS establishment data on turnover rates and PSID, to empirically test and confirm each of the two hypotheses.

As domestic recession has had an adverse impact on many Korean companies in Korea, financial soundness has become a critical issues. It is essential to identify financial risk factors to prevent workout as well as to improve the financial condition of domestic construction companies. Therefore, this study derived important management indicators and the financial ratios that belong to each indicator through a comparative analysis between healthy companies and workout companies with financial statement. As a consequence, key financial ratios are derived into 3 of 25 ratios; Equity Ratio in stability indicator, Total Asset Turnover Ratio in activity indicator, and Labor Equipment Ratio in productivity indicator. So, Korean construction firms are required close monitoring these critical financial ratios indicating variation between construction companies which have opposing statuses in finance in order to keep sound financial condition and increase productivity.

This study analyzed the effect of the operation system of human resource management. First, the primary operating direction of the goal, talent selection system, and personnel management personnel management affected almost all the performance variables. More than one primary goal of personnel management in the loyalty inspired workers more than the fixed labor costs, and external recruitment of short-term hiring favored internal training scheme for long-term employment, employee training, and development in the long term more than short-term performance improvement the more weight to quality and innovation in the productivity of labor, product and services, employee-driven innovation, reduce turnover, had a positive impact on labor relations. On the other hand, the primary goal of personnel management and personnel selection methods had a positive impact on financial performance. Personnel management operating direction did not significantly affect the financial results. Second, the main type of employee utilization affected the quality of products and services, and labor relations. Trying to take advantage of temporary workers more than regular workers had a positive impact on the quality of products and services, and labor relations. Third, the operating unit of Personnel Management had an impact on the degree of innovation of products and services. Both personal achievements and the performance of the operating units had a positive impact on the degree of innovation of products and services, more than teamwork and personnel management. This study provided practical implications for verifying the effect of detailed characteristics of human resource management on financial/non-financial business performance.

The study was attempted to survey the pay and job satisfaction of clinical nurses in some hospitals. The period was Jan 6th through Jan 27th. 1997 and the subjects were 277 nurses working in 5 hospitals in Pusan city. This study was based on questionnaires which focused on the pay and job satis faction of the nurses. The following instruments were used for collecting the data: PSQ. JDI and MSQ on the scale of 1 being lowest to 5 being highest satisfaction. The analysis of collected data was executed by using SPSS/PC+. The results were as follows: 1. The main age level was 26-30 and the portion was 44.4%. The Mean of the monyhly pay was 930 ${\pm}$130 thousand won. 2. The average point of pay satisfaction was 2.17${\pm}$.61. 3. The average point of job satisfaction was 2.87 ${\pm}$.66. 4. The factors which affect the pay satisfaction were 'the size of hospital'. 'the joining of labor unions' and 'the amount of pay' . 5. The factors which affect the job satisfaction were 'the size of hospital'. 'the job rank' and 'the amount of In conclusion, nurses are not satisfied with their job and pay levels because of the size of the hospital and the amount of pay, In order to solve the problem of turnover. medium-sized hospitals need to standardize and modify the levels of pay, the structure and the system according to standards well established by large-sized hospitals.

This study empirically analyzed how human resource management(HRM) practices affect the performance of venture firms using The results of the study are as follows: First of all, several HRM practices were found to affect organizational performance significantly. Specifically, ${(1)}$ recruitment and selection practices were negatively related to turnover, which seemed to mean that effective staffing including development of good recruitment pools and rigorous selection process lower turnover, and ${(2)}$ training and development, compensation, and labor-management relations were positively related to subjective performance of the firms, which implied that as the venture firms provide more opportunities of training and development to employees, provide compensation on the basis of performance, and develop cooperative labor-management relations, the subjective performance of the venture firms Increases. Secondly, negative interaction effects were found to exist between competitive strategies and HRM practices on organizational performance. Specifically, ${(1)}$ the interaction between differentiation strategy and compensation were significantly related to turnover, ${(2)}$ HRM planning and training and development interacted with differentiation strategy to significantly affect subjective organizational performance, and ${(3)}$ HRM planning, selection, training and development, compensation and communication practices interacted with technology innovation strategy to affect subjective organizational performance. So far, there have not been many studies which deal with HRM practices of venture firms in Korea. Thus, it is hoped that this study stimulate more research efforts on theory development and empirical studies on HRM practices of venture firms. Also, it is hoped that government conduct more policy studies and provide more resources in HRM area of the venture firms. Specifically, it is suggested that government take proactive steps to improve industrial skilled staff and technical researcher systems in order to alleviate the problems of workforce shortages in venture firms. And it IS also suggested that regional human resource development programs be introduced with the participation of the firms, local governments, and universities.
This article examines the history of the in - house subcontracting and the stabilization of labor - management relations in the steel industry in Japan. The ratio of in-house subcontract workers among steel workers has increased steadily until the mid-2000s, and about 70% in case of the largest company. In-house subcontracting was used as a strategy of the company to increase the quantity flexibility of employment and to save labor costs. The in-house subcontracting company needed company-specialized skills, and the internal labor market was formed because the rate of full-time workers was high and the turnover rate was low. The in-house subcontractor introduced long-term business relationship with the steel factory by introducing the equipment and materials necessary for the performance of the work, and the factory implemented the productivity improvement policy of the in-house subcontractor, and the win-win relationship between the factory and in-house subcontractor was developed. The trade union did not oppose the idea that the expansion of in-house subcontracting contributed to corporate profits, the stability of employment of the members and maintenance of their working conditions. Since 2000, the steel factory has pursued the transformation of in - house subcontractors into subsidiaries, which has been supported by capital relations. By the way, since the mid-2000s, there has been an increase in the number of regular workers' employment. The major factors are as follows: more strengthened compliance with laws and regulations, the higher quality request of customers, stricter keeping of deadlines, and problem in recruiting of workers at in-house subcontract companies. The wage gap between the factory and in - house subcontracting was less at company B than at company S, and the wage level of in - house subcontracting was about 90% of the factory at company B. The relatively small gap at company B seems to be due to the union's movement of narrowing the gap, low market dominance and unfavorable labor market. The internal labor market has been formed in the in-house subcontracting, and the wage gap is not large, and the possibility of labor disputes is low. Industrial relations are stable in the in-house subcontract company as well as the factory. The stabilization of labor-management relations in the steel industry in Korea is required to reduce the wage gap between the factory and in-house subcontract enterprises by raising productivity and expanding the internal labor market at in-house subcontract enterprises.
The sustained economic growth cannot be expected without the balanced development in all the realms of industries. Korea has recorded the continuous high growth rate of economy, but it is now facing some difficulties in keeping the normal economic growth, because industrial workers do not like to work in some fields, the typical one of which is the fishery works. This thesis aims at studying the determinants of fishermen's job satisfaction(FJS) and the determinants of affecting the fishermen's trunover intention(FTI) to obtain and maintain the man power for fishing boats. This study assumes that the determinants which affact FJS are fishermen's work values, job characteristics, the attitude of accepting their fishery work, and that the determinants which affect FTI are FJS and their perceptions of labor market. This study concerns two kinds of Job satisfaction : one is an intrinsic satisfaction which comes directly from the work itself, and the other is an extrinsic satisfaction comes from the compensation for the work, but in this study “Pollnac's work satisfaction factor” is added as an additional determinant of FJS. There is a difference in job satisfactions between the individuals who have different work values. Some feel more satisfacttion than the others, which can be explained by the internal work values which assume the work is only a means for another objective of life. This study applies Hackman and 014ham's studies to the job characteristics that a worker's job satisfaction is positively related to the core job characteristis of the job. In addition, this study transformed their studies into variables. A job enrichment to reduce the simplicity of a work and make it more valueable can increase a job satisfaction, but an existing organization has limitation in redesigning the job for its enrichment. A reasonable answer about this matter can be obtained from the workers' subjective perceptins to highly regard the objective job characteristics. Worker's previews of fishery work also affect their job satisfaction because they are already informed of the details and charcteristics of the job that they have to carry out. A Job dissatisfaction causes their intention to leave jobs owing to general perceptions prevailing in labor markets.
In this paper, I investigate job creation and destruction in Korean mining and manufacturing between 1982 and 2000 using the raw data of Annual Mining and Manufacturing Survey. The rate of job creation and destruction of continuing plants averaged 9.75 and 10.33, respectively, which are higher than those of OECD countries, Chile, and Colombia. The created jobs showed weak persistence and the concentration of job reallocation is high, compared with other countries. Job reallocation accounts for major fraction of worker reallocation and the fraction has increased before 1997. Analysis of time series data of job flow revealed a general pattern of pro-cyclic job creation and counter-cyclic job destruction. However job reallocation in Korea is strongly acyclic whereas the rate is known to be counter-cyclical in the U.S.
Order picking in automotive service parts warehouses is considered to be the most labor-intensive operation. Such warehouses contain hundreds of thousands of items, but normally 20% of products contribute to about 80% of turnover according to Pareto's 80-20 principle. Therefore most fast moving items are located near an outbound area which is called the "Golden Zone". Order picking routing efficiency is related to productivity and labor cost. However, most companies use simple methods. In this paper, we describe a series of computational experiments over a set of test cases where, we compared various previously existing routing heuristics to an optimal algorithm. We focus on examining the influence of the golden zone on the performance and selection of routing methods. The results obtained show that the optimal routing method increases the productivity at least 17.2%, and all the routing methods have better performance as the pick up rate from the golden zone increases.
