The Influence of Emotional Labor on Organizational Commitment and Job Satisfaction of Librarians Working at Public Libraries (공공도서관 사서의 감정노동이 조직몰입과 직무만족에 미치는 영향)

  • Librarians, who provide the public with library services at public libraries, are employees whose jobs are often require emotional labor. The emotional labor of librarians working at public libraries can result in stresses caused by the discrepancy between the library's emotional requirements and the librarian's personal emotions, which may influence organizational effectiveness, such as organizational commitment and job satisfaction. In that, this study intends to examine the influence of emotional labor on the organizational commitment and job satisfaction of librarians working at public libraries. To do so, based upon the conceptual underpinning through literature reviews of librarians working at public libraries and emotional labor, this study constructs a theoretical framework of organizational commitment and job satisfaction of librarians. Using a questionnaire survey method, this study surveys 238 public library staff from 33 public libraries in the Seoul metropolitan area, statistically examines the response through the SPSS20 statistical package, and analyzes the relationship between and among the variables. Based on the analysis, discussion on the influence of the emotional labor on organizational commitment and job satisfaction of librarians working at public libraries follows.

A Study on the Mediating Effect of Positive Psychological Capital on the Effectiveness Relationship of Librarians' Emotional Labor and Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL): Including Widely Representative Library Librarians (사서들의 감정노동과 전문직 삶의 질(ProQOL)에 미치는 영향관계에서 긍정심리자본의 매개효과에 관한 연구 - 광역대표도서관 사서들을 대상으로 -)

  • This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of positive psychological capital in the relationship between emotional labor and Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) of librarians belonging to the Widely Representative Library. From February 13, 2023 to February 24, 2023, 159 librarians working in 17 Widely Representative Libraries nationwide were surveyed for general characteristics, emotional labor, ProQOL, and positive psychological capital through questionnaires. For statistical analysis, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and measurement model analysis were conducted using SPSS Statistics 24.0 and Amos 25.0. In addition, the mediating effect of positive psychological capital in the relationship between emotional labor and ProQOL of librarians in the Widely Representative Library was analyzed using a bootstrapping analysis method. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, it was found that there was a significant effect among librarians' emotional labor, ProQOL, and positive psychological capital in the Widely Representative Library. Second, the indirect effect of positive psychological capital in the relationship between Emotional Labor and ProQOL of Widely Representative Library librarians was found to be statistically significant. In other words, considering the direct effect of emotional labor on ProQOL, it can be inferred that there is a partial mediating effect. Therefore, it is suggested to develop a program that can improve the quality of professional life by reducing emotional labor and strengthening the positive psychological capital of librarians in further studies.

Problems in defining public library users as viewed through the 'book-room' phenomenon in Pusan (도서원현상을 통해 본 공공도서관 이용자에 대한 인식의 문제)

  • This study, that is made by an on-the-spot survey and a library survey, is aimed at finding some problems in the recognition regarding public library users and suggesting the clue to solve the problems revealed in the way of having compared with 'Book-Room' and Public Library. Poor material was always a troublemaker in this study. Especially the part of 'Book-Room' phenomenon is wholly dependent upon a field survey, that is, interview with a 'book-room' clerks, gathering the advertising leaflets, a close observation on 'Book-Room', etc. There are little printed materials, much less precedent research theses. In the other parts of this paper, there are needed good statistical materials, but the nortion presented in the public library user statistics-for example pupil, students, housewives, old men, the generality of people, etc.- is so vague that it is insufficient and unhelpful for this study. In my judgment, with all these limitations, this article gets some results as follows : 1. 'Book-Room' is the cultural organization which is being operated by, for, of the community inhabitants and it takes on the character of movement - labor movement, cultural movement, and community movement. 2. The pioneer of the Book-Room is 'Yangso Hyupdong chohap' (which means good book- cooperative association) lasted from 1978 to the next year. 3. 'Arom'(means learning) Book-Room is the first real Book-Room at Seomyon district in Pusan established in 1987. 4. Book-Room can be classified by its character as 'Labor BookRoom' and 'Cultural Book-Room'. There are 10 Labor BookRooms and 4 Cultural Book-Rooms in Pusan. 5. Labor Book-Rooms organized themselves to 'Labor Book-Room conference'. 6. Book-Rooms have done their best to extort the needs and interests of the community inhabitants, but relatively public libraries do not, hence the majority of residents are neglected from the public library service. This is at Book-Rooms' back to have been spread so quickly. 7. There is a very large gap between the component ratio of community inhabitants by class and that of public library users by same criterion, that is, in the case of the former, the labor class goes beyond a half point, in the latter, the majority of public library user is composed of students and housewives. 8. Researchers and librarians have concentrated their attention and effort not upon whole residents in community but upon existing users at present time. They do not try to develope potential users. So, researchers' and librarians' recognition regarding the public library users needs to be changed. 9. The concept of 'core-user' may be the key to solve the problems related with public library users. For the purpose of ensuring the 'core-user', it is necessary to study the community and inhabitants.

A Study on the Effect of Emotional Labor Experienced by Local Public Library Staffs on Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment: The Case of Three Regional Public Libraries in Gyeonggi-do (지자체 공공도서관 직원의 감정노동이 직무만족 및 조직몰입에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 경기도 3개 지역 공공도서관을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated the differences in emotional labor, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment by job type, and the effect of emotional labor on job satisfaction and organizational commitment for public library employees. Using SPSS 27.0, the survey contents were performed frequency analysis, factor analysis, validity analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that the librarianship experienced more emotional labor than non-librarians, and the frequency of emotional labor increased depending on whether or not the civil service was included, and had a negative effect on overall job satisfaction and job condition satisfaction. However, in the case of psychological response to job satisfaction, library data work was found to be high. In terms of user service, emotional labor that occurs in librarians' work has two sides, which can have both positive and negative effects on the librarian's job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Therefore, practical measures to reduce the frequency and emotional dissonance of emotional labor and increase the diversity of emotional labor should be included in the user response manual and future mental health promotion program development.

The Effects of Emotional Labor Level on the Level of Job Satisfaction and Library Information Service Provision in Public Library Librarians (공공도서관 사서의 감정노동수준이 직무만족 및 도서관정보서비스 제공수준에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of emotional labor level on the level of job satisfaction and library information service provision in public libraries. The research model used emotional labor levels as an independent variable; job satisfaction and level of library information service provision as a dependent variable; and organizational culture as a control factor. The data were collected randomly from 220 librarians of public libraries in Seoul by distributing and collecting internet surveys. Reliability analysis, correlation coefficient analysis, multiple regression analysis, and regression analysis were performed using the SPSS 18.0 program. The statistic hypothesis test results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, public library librarians did not like to express their emotions to users, trying to express their emotions more positively than what they were actually feeling. Second, although librarians experience emotional labors, they feel a sense of achievement when undertaking their tasks and develop pride and happiness in their work. As librarians perceive their work professional, they overcome emotional labors, and have pride in their work. Third, although librarians experience emotional labors, a reasonable job evaluation with goals, and their relationships with colleagues would lead to accomplishment in their work. In addition, although the evaluation of employees is focused on performance, librarians improve their service if library users are satisfied with their service and the services are provided adequately.

The Librarian's Emotional Labor at the University Libraries: Focusing on the Relationship among Supervisor'S Emotional Intelligence, Social Support and Library Service Level (대학도서관 사서의 감정노동에 관한 연구 - 상사의 감성지능, 사회적 지원 및 도서관서비스 제공수준과의 관계를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examined (1) what effect emotional labor has on an university library, focusing on (2) the relationship among a supervisor's emotional intelligence, the extent of social support and the level of library service on job performance. The survey period took place from 14 Oct. to 4 Nov. 2013. 533 librarians at 13 public and 28 private university libraries were included in the survey. Of the 533 surveys distributed, 529 were returned and used in the final analysis. SPSS Win 21.0 was used for statistical analysis, factor analysis, regression analysis and differential analysis. The survey also shows that a librarian's emotional labor affects emotional intelligence of supervisor, social support and library service level positively. This finding is not the case for the employees in the general service industry. Because the librarian is professional and manages stress better than general employees. This research suggest the following practical measures. Educational programs for librarian's emotional intelligence should be planned in order to improve library service.

  • This study focuses on how public libraries in East Germany adjusted themselves into new environments after the unification during 15 years(1990~2005). First, system and operation of East Germany's public libraries are studied and public libraries in West and East Germany are compared before the unification. After public libraries in East Germany became unified with West Germany, the structure of East Germany's public libraries changed, many of public libraries and labor libraries were closed and collection in those libraries was discarded or replaced. Thus, it is studied how libraries enhanced their capabilities and discovered their roles or identities in changing situations in this research.

  • The study has a purpose of understanding the factors that affect the oranizational commitment of the employees working in the libraries for visually impaired. To do this, the study chose personal background, emotional labor, role, job characteristics, organizational culture and organizational justice and attempted to find out how these factors affect the oranizational commitment. As a research method, mixed study method was used where quantitative analysis was complemented by qualitative analysis. For quantitative analysis, statistical analysis was conducted using the retrieved questionnaires. For qualitative analysis, the researcher had a one-on-one talk with the experts and employees who want to participate using an interview note was recomposed based on the survey responses. In the study results, emotional labor, job characteristics, organizational culture and organizational justice was proven to have influence on job engagement. To improve the job engagement, autonomy should be guaranteed by minimizing the organizational intervention to the assigned works and expanding the discretionary power. Furthermore, intensive management of the employees' emotional labor and fair process regarding the work performance is highly important.

  • The Saemaul Mini-Library system had to start as a purely voluntary grass-roots movement without a tax su n.0, pport. In other words, it had to depend on voluntary contributions in time and labor by the reading club members for its finance and daily maintenance and operation. The purpose of the study is to analyse the actual condition of a Saemaul Mini-Library, which is established in a rural and a fishing village. To meet this purpose, I will survey the function and the meaning of a Saemaul Mini-Library and the main tendency of it-now did it start and how did it develop and I will analyse the general condition of structural factors (establishment, materials, reading club) in a Saemaul Mini-Library.
