The low caloric LNG, which didn't meet the gas interchangeability of Korea, has been imported from 2005 winter season. Amount of this LNG imports has been increased from year to year. In the near future, very low caloric LNG (calorific value ${\leq}$ 9,500 kcal/$Nm^3$) such as CBM, Shale LNG will be imported large amounts. For this reason, we need a method for monitoring live calorific values(CV) of LNG in each storage tank to supply gasified LNG with interchangeable CV at LNG receiving terminal. This study was conducted to develope the method for measuring the live CVs of LNG in each storage tank using LNG densitometer. For this purpose, the accurate correlation between CV and density of LNG was derived and the uncertainty of this method was evaluated and also the measuring system for CVs was constructed at LNG receiving terminal. To verify this method, the results of measurement using this method were compared with the field data of LNG analysis and the results showed that the deviations were 0.17~0.47%.

Recently, the use of natural gas has steadily increased due to its economical advantage and increased demand of clean energy uses. Accordingly, construction of LNG storage tanks is also increased. Secure of the stability of LNG tanks storage requires high technology as natural gas is stored in a liquid state for efficiency of storage. When a cryogenic LNG fluid leaks on ground due to a defect in LNG tank, damage is expected to be significant. Many researchers evaluated the critical and negative effects of LNG leakage, but there is limited research on the effect of cryogenic fluid leakage on the ground supporting LNG tanks. Therefore, in this study, the freezing expansion of the ground during cryogenic LNG fluid leakage was evaluated considering various outflow situations and ground conditions. The LNG leakage scenarios were simulated based on numerical analyses results varying the surcharge load, temperature boundary conditions, and soil types including freeze-sensitive soil. Consequently, short and long term ground temperature variations after LNG leakage were evaluated and the resulting ground behavior including vertical displacement behavior and porosity were analyzed.
LNG demand has been rapidly increasing in Korea for a variety of reaso including stable supply, non- polluting, and high combustion efficiency characteris As a result the construction and expansion of LNG storage facilities have b continuing at a vigorous pace. One of the most important structural core elemen the LNG storage tank is the membrane, consisting of stainless steel. The memb to be applied inside of LNG storage tank is provided with corrugations to abs thermal contraction and expansion caused by LNG temperature. From the viewp of strength design, however. it is essential to confirm that the membrane undergo a stable deformation and has a sufficient fatigue strength Experim studies are presented to investigate the deformation and strength of the memb which is designed by Kogas. All experiments are conducted on the basis of RP and we found the results is fully satisfied with the RPIS.
As the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tank contains cryogenic liquid, realistic thermal analyses are of a primary importance for a successful design. The structural details of the LNG tank are so complicated that some strategies are necessary to reasonably predict its temperature distribution. The proposed heat transfer model can consider the beneficial effects of insulation layers and a suspended deck on temperature distribution of the outer concrete tank against cryogenic conditions simply by the boundary conditions of the outer tank model. To this aim, the equilibrium condition or heat balance in a steady state is utilized in a various way, and some aspects of heat transfer via conduction, convection and radiation are implemented as necessary. Overall thermal analysis procedures for the LNG tank are revisited to examine some unjustifiable assumptions of conventional analyses. Concrete and insulation properties under cryogenic condition and a reasonable conversion procedure of the temperature-induced nonlinear stress into the section forces are discussed. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed schemes in predicting the actual temperature and stress distributions of the tank as affected by the cryogenic LNG for the cases of normal operation and leakage from the inner steel tank. It is expected that the proposed schemes enable a designer to readily detect the effects of insulation layers and a suspended deck and, therefore, can be employed as a useful and consistent tool to evaluate the thermal effect in a design stage of an LNG tank as well as in a detailed analysis.
This paper presents the stress and deformation behaviors of 9% nickel steel inner tank in a full containment LNG storage tank using a FE analysis. For an increased strength safety of an inner tank, the tension cable was fastened around the outside wall of an inner tank, which is known as a weak zone for the hydrostatic pressures, cryogenic temperature loads, and other loadings. Based on the FEM computed results between a conventional inner tank and a inner tank with tension cables around the lower part of the side wall of an inner tank, the redesigned inner tank is more safe than that of the conventional tank without a tension cable. The FEM results recommend $3{\sim}4$ steel tension cables with a diameter of 50mm for an increased strength safety of the inner tank, which may decrease the stress concentration and deformation near the lower part of the side wall. Thus the tension cable around the inner tank may be used as an alternative safety device compared to the stiffener and the top girder structures for the increased LNG storage tank, especially.
In order to apply the properties of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) to support panel of polyurethane foam in LNG storage tank, we estimated the mechanical properties, degree of vapour barrier, chemical stability and thermal conductivity changes as ageing. According to the results, the mechanical strength (i.g. compressive strength, bending strength, tensile strength and shear strength) are more than 30 times higher than those of plywood. The FRP-polyurethane foam(PUF) composites have lower thermal conductivity changes as ageing than plywood-PUF composites. FRP-PUF sandwich composite for LNG storage tank with these remarkable properties are compared the abilities of these structures with those of the conventional structures(plywood-PUF sandwich composite). Finally, we can obtain the effects such as superior mechanical properties and fuel saving through improved ability of vapor barrier.

As the LNG demands are growing, the constructions of LNG FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Off-loading) and LNG carriers have been constantly increased, and the various design of storage tank has been tried. This paper propose that the material of inner storage tanks is made of 5~9% Ni steel plate and perlite powder insulation instead of urethane foam block. It needs essentially to obtain the proper design specifications that are the pressure of perlite, the characteristics of resilient blanket as the pressure absorber, optimum thickness of blanket and design pressure of tank wall, etc. to enable the perlite insulation system to LNG carrier, The results show that the design thickness of blanket should be between 1/4 to 1/3 of insulation width and the optimum rate becomes 30%, and the design pressure be applied below 1,500 Pa with blanket thickness.

Both analytical and experimental studies are presented to investigate the strength of the membrane which is designed by Kogas and will be used as a sealing for a LNG tank. Kogas has already developed the Ring-Knot type membrane, but new type had yet to be developed. This paper reports on the results of investigations into this new type of membrane. Various theorical analyses using FEM and experiments are conducted on the basis of RPIS, and it is found that the RPIS is fully satisfied.

Tensile and fracture toughness tests of the cold-rolled STS 304 steel plate for membrane material of LNG storage tank were performed at wide range of temperatures, 11 IK(boiling point of LNG), 153K , 193K and 293K(room temperature). Tensile strength significantly increases with a decrease in temperature, but the yield strength is relatively insensitive to temperature. Elongation at 193K abruptly decreases by 50% of that at 293K, and then decreases slightly in the temperature range of 193K to 111K. Strain hardening exponents at low temperatures are about four times as high as that at 293K. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_c$) and tearing modulus($T_{mat}$) tend to decrease with a decrease in temperature. The $J_c$ values are inversely related to effective yield strength in the temperature range of 111K to 293K. These phenomena result from a significant increase in the amount of transformed martensite in low temperature regions.
An LNG bunkering system stores LNG in a horizontal IMO's C-Type tank insulated with perlite powder, and $10^{-2}$ Torr vacuum in the annular space between the double walls. Current storage tanks have high heat leakage, evaporating over 2.0% daily. A more efficiently insulated storage tank reducing the evaporation rate is required to develope. This research carried out thermal analysis on a new effective insulation method, i.e. double shield insulation system, that separates high super vacuum in the annular space between two tanks with a perlite vacuum in the back side of outer tank. This highly efficient insulation system obtained an evaporation rate of 0.16% per day under a $10^{-4}$ Torr vacuum. Even if the space loses its vacuum, the new insulation system showed a lower evaporation rate of 5.23% than the present perlite system of 4.9%.
