  • Using a precursor of $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ as a starting material, a surface-modified cathode material was obtained by coating with KCl, where the added KCl reduces residual Li compounds such as $Li_2CO_3$ and LiOH, on the surface. The resulting electrochemical properties were investigated. The amounts of $Li_2CO_3$ and LiOH decreased from 8,464 ppm to 1,639 ppm and from 8,088 ppm to 6,287 ppm, respectively, with 1 wt% KCl added $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ that had been calcined at $800^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction results revealed that 1 wt% of KCl added $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ did not affect the parent structure but enhanced the development of hexagonal crystallites. Additionally, the charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) decreased dramatically from $225{\Omega}$ to $99{\Omega}$, and the discharge capacity increased to 182.73mAh/g. Using atomic force microscopy, we observed that the surface area decreased by half because of the exothermic heat released by the Li residues. The reduced surface area protects the cathode material from reacting with the electrolyte and hinders the development of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on the surface of the oxide particles. Finally, we found that the introduction of KCl into $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ is a very effective method of enhancing the electrochemical properties of this active material by reducing the residual Li. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first to demonstrate this phenomenon.

  • The neutronic analysis of Helium Cooled Ceramic Reflector (HCCR) breeding blankets has been performed using the 3D Monte Carlo code MCNPX and ENDF nuclear data library. This study aims to reduce 6Li percentage in the breeder zones as much as possible ensuring tritium self-sufficiency. This work is devoted to investigating the effect of 6Li percentage on the HCCR breeding blanket's neutronic parameters, such as neutron flux and spectrum, Tritium Breeding Ratio (TBR), nuclear power density, and energy multiplication factor. In the ceramic breeders at the saturated thickness, increasing the enrichment of 6Li reduces its share in the tritium production. Therefore, ceramic breeders typically use lower enriched Li from 30% to 60%. The investigation of neutronic analysis in the suggested geometry shows that using 60% 6Li in Li2TiO3 can yield acceptable TBR and energy deposition results, which would be economically feasible.

  • Lithium niobate single crystals with various [Li]/[Nb] ratios were grown by the Czochralski method from melts having compositions varing between 48.6 ~ 58.0 mol % $Li_2O$. A vapor transport equilibration technique has been used to improve the homogeneity and adjust the [Li]/[Nb] ratio in small $LiNbO_3$ single crystals grown by the Czochralski method. When equilibrated with a Li-rich powder (65 mol%$Li_2O$), containing a mixture of $LiNbO_3$ and $Li_3NbO_4$, crystals of nearly stoichiometric composition can be obtained. This was established by studying the composition dependence of the following properties; lineshape, intensity and linewidth for the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of $Fe^{3+}$ energy of the fundamental absorption edge and $OH^-$ absorption spectra.

  • $Li_2MnO_3-LiMO_2$(M=Ni, Co, Mn) nano-composite is a promising cathode material for xEV application due to its high theoretic capacity. However high voltage operating system of $Li_2MnO_3-LiMO_2$(M=Ni, Co, Mn) has worked as a hurdle in its application because of the inherent demerits, such as cycle life degradation and gas evolution. In order to enhance cell performance of $Li_2MnO_3-LiMO_2$(M=Ni, Co, Mn)/graphite cell, we examined electrolyte mainly composed of FEC, fluroalkyl ether and $LiPF_6$ (F-based EL). F-based EL showed much better discharging retention ratio than 1.3 M $LiPF_6$ EC/EMC/DMC (3/4/3, v/v/v) (STD). Furthermore gas evolution, especially CO and $CO_2$ during $60^{\circ}C$ storage for 30 days was dramatically reduced owing to thermal stable SEI formation effect of F-based EL.

  • Ag doping effect on $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ cathode material was studied. Specially, we focused on rate performance of Ag doped samples. The $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ powder was prepared by simple combustion method and the Ag was doped using $AgNO_3$ during gelation process. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, there was no structural change by Ag doping, but the 'metallic' form of Ag was included in the doped powder. Both bare and Ag 1 wt.% doped sample showed similar discharge capacity of 242 mAh/g at 0.2C rate. However, as the increase of charge-discharge rate to 3C, Ag 1 wt.% doped sample showed higher discharge capacity (172 mAh/g) and better cyclic performance than those of bare sample. The discharge capacity of Ag 5 wt.% doped sample was relatively low at all rate condition. However it displayed better rate performance than other samples.

  • Solid polymer electrolytes using $BF_3LiMA$ as monomer were synthesized by usual one step radical polymerization in THF solvent. The effect of $BF_3LiMA$ concentration on ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability was investigated by AC impedance measurement and linear sweep voltammetry. As a result, the highest ionic conductivity reached $7.71{\times}10^{-6}S\;cm^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ was obtained in 12.9 wt% of $BF_3LiMA$ content. Further increase or decrease of $BF_3LiMA$ content result to decrease the ionic conductivity due to the brittle matrix properties in former case and the insufficient number of charge carrier in the latter case. Furthermore, since the counter-anion was immobilized in the self-doped solid polymer electrolytes, high electrochemical stability up to 6.0 V was observed even in $60^{\circ}C$.

  • We discussed structure, energy state, characteristics of thermal stability, and electrochemical properties of Li-GFICs, Li-PCICs, and Li-AGICs during the intercalation process. According to X-ray diffraction patterns, we observed phase of stage 2 mainly from Li-GFICs, while stage 1 phase as well as stage 2 from Li-PCICs. For the structure of Li-AGICs, stage 1 phase was dominant, but it was not possible to obtain pure stage 1 compound probably due to structural characteristics of artificial graphite. We measured energy state of the compounds to stage stability, and revealed that Li-AGICs and Li-GFICs were in more stable state than Li-PCICs. Therefore, those two compounds could be excellent candidate for energy reserve material. From the study of thermal degradation, Li-GFICs showed strong exothermic reaction at around 300 and $400^{\circ}C$. In the study of thermal stability of Li-AGIC at various temperatures, we observed that lithium was not completely deintercalated and high stage was maintained even at high temperature. In the case of charge, discharge, and electrochemical studies, Li-GFICs showed the best results.

  • $LiFePO_4$ has been received attention as a potential cathode material for the lithium secondary batteries. In our study, $LiFePO_4$ cathode active materials were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. It was modified by coating $TiO_2$ and carbon in order to enhance cyclic performance and electronic conductivity. $TiO_2$ and carbon coatings on $LiFePO_4$ materials enhanced the electronic conductivity and its charge/discharge capacity. For lithium polymer battery applications, $LiFePO_4$/solid polymer electrolyte (SPE)/Li and $LiFePO_{4}-TiO_{2}/SPE/Li$ cells were characterized by a cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling. The electrode with $LiFePO_{4}-carbon-TiO_{2}$ in PVDF-PC-EC-$LiClO_{4}$ electrolyte showed promising capacity of above 100 mAh/g at 1C rate.
