  • In this paper, we improved the light extraction efficiency by considering an additional upper layer on the top surface of a conventional LED. We simulated the LED's light emission as functions of the thickness and the refractive index of the upper layer, and analyzed how the condition improved the light efficiency. When the refractive index's range was from 1.05 to 1.40, the LED emission increased. For that case, the emission also increased as the thickness increased. We experimentally showed that the light extraction efficiency was improved about 22% by forming the upper layer on the top surface of an LED using material with refractive index 1.30 at 589.3 nm. It is expected that forming the upper layer on an LED can easily improve the extraction efficiency.

  • The aim of this research is to map the intellectual structure of the field of LED and optics during the period of 2000-2009. We utilize the scientometric tool of co-word analysis to reveal patterns and trends in the LED and optics field by measuring the association strengths of keywords (or IPCs). Data were collected from Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and United Stated Patent and Trademark Office (USTPO) for the period of 2000-2009. Keywords were extracted from abstracts and further standardized using thesaurus. In order to trace the dynamic changes of the LED and optics field, the whole 10-year period was separated into two consecutive periods: 2000-2004 and 2005-2009. The results show that the LED and optics field has some established research themes and it also changes to embrace new themes.

  • This paper has studied dissymmetrical light distribution design using the secondary optics in the simulation. fundamental Lambertian radiation distribution based on LED has been cut off by the secondary optics, and the first surface slope of lens and second surface slope of total reflection area have been calculated through formula. PMMA (the index of refraction: 1.49361) which is material of lens has been selected. critical angle($42.02993^{\circ}$) between Air and PMMA has been calulated by snell's law, and total reflection angle slope has been selected about $16.67^{\circ}$ to occur the total reflection. when the first surface slope and the second surface slope has been set up, Rays of all total reflection area have generated the total reflection. finally, designed LED Module has been estimated by Korean Industrial Standards for LED safety street lighting. dissymmetrical light distribution have been analyzed with reached effect of road illuminance, and average road illuminance which are each 70.6 lx, 40.35 lx, and 25.88 lx have been satisfied with Korean Industrial Standards for LED safety street lighting.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate inactivation effect of UVA-LED ultraviolet radiation upon Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus which are the major bacteria causing eye diseases. Methods: The small sterilization device was made using UVA-LED of 400 nm. After Pseudomonas aeruginosa was diluted to $10^{-7}$ and Staphylococcus aureus to $10^{-5}$ and diluted solutions were put onto each liquid medium. They were irradiated by 400 nm of UVA for different amount of time; 15 min, 30 min, 60 min, 120 min, 240 min, 360 min and 480 min each. Results: The data from sterilization test was solved to regression line equation and the target log inactivation was obtained. The 3 log inactivation UV irradiation value of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 54,847 UV dose ($mJ/cm^2$) and irradiation time was 135.42 min while the 3 log inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus was 39,066 UV dose ($mJ/cm^2$) and irradiation time was 98.72 min. Conclusions: The inactivation effect of sterilization method using 400 nm of UVA-LED upon Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus has been verified and it is considered as a useful method in inactivating the contact lenses.

  • LED arrays with pixel numbers of $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, and $5{\times}5$ have been studied in this paper in order to enhance the optical output power and decrease heat dissipation of an AlGaInP-based light emitting diode display device (pixel size of $280{\times}280{\mu}m$) fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems. Simulation results showed that the thermal resistances of the $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, $5{\times}5$ arrays were $52^{\circ}C/W$, $69.7^{\circ}C/W$, and $84.3^{\circ}C/W$. The junction temperature was calculated by the peak wavelength shift method, which showed that the maximum value appears at the center pixel due to thermal crosstalk from neighboring pixels. The central temperature would be minimized with $40{\mu}m$ pixel pitch and $150{\mu}m$ substrate thickness as calculated by thermal modeling using finite element analysis. The modeling can be used to optimize parameters of highly integrated AlGaInP-based LED arrays fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems technology.

  • In this paper secondary optics for an LED lamp with a narrow beam angle of $15^{\circ}$ were optimized by using a two-reflector system, to reduce both its size and the occurrence of satellite rings. The conic constant and the curvature of the primary reflector were determined by considering the relation of the source size to the beam angle, and the optimal position and radius of the secondary reflector were found for reducing the occurrence of satellite rings. Luminous flux efficiency was about 80%.

  • A two dimensional point light source array can replace both the viewing zone forming optics and the back light panel in the contact-type 3 dimensional imaging systems based on LC panels. This replacement can make the system structure of the 3 dimensional imaging systems no different from that of the conventional LCD and can reduce undesirable visual effects caused by the viewing zone forming optics. The problem with the point light source array is the visual quality deterioration of the system due to the non-ideal nature of the array.

  • In this study, we researched the LED source MR16,which maintains the strong points of an ordinary MR16 while compensating for its weak points. The optical system composition of the LED MR16 includes four aspherical lens per sheet and a patterned reflector. The aspherical optical system and reflector were designed using optical software, and the performance was estimated using a lighting simulation program. Finally, a prototype was manufactured after analyzing the simulation data, and the reliability of the simulation results was estimated using a comparative analysis of the designed data and measured data.

  • In this paper we propose a freeform secondary lens for an LED fishing/working lamp (LFWL). This innovative LED lamp is used to replace the traditional HID fishing lamp, to satisfy the lighting demands of fishing and the on-board activities on fishing boats. To realize the freeform lens's geometry, Gaussian decomposition is involved in our optics-design process for approaching the targeted light intensity distribution curve (LIDC) of the LFWL lens. The simulated results show that the illumination on the deck, on the sea's surface, and underwater shows only small differences between LED fishing/working lamps and HID fishing lamps. Meanwhile, a lighting efficiency of 91% with just one third of the power consumption can be achieved, when the proposed LED fishing/working lamps are used instead of HID fishing lamps.

  • Due to the difficulty in measuring very low out-of-band cutoff depths of solar blind UV filters, we propose a cutoff depth adjustable measurement system (CDAM) to test deep cutoff filters with a large dynamic range. The CDAM utilizing the substitution method is elaborately composed of several parts, including narrow-band LED light sources, standard reflective neutral attenuators with known attenuation coefficients, and a photomultiplier (PMT). This paper also presents an attenuator combination method ensuring that the PMT works within its linear response range. In addition, numerical simulation testifies to the method, and experiment shows that the CDAM system can achieve an extension of dynamic range from 0-6 OD to 0-10 OD, which is sufficient for the measurement of out-of-band cutoff depths of solar blind UV filters. Above all, the CDAM system, being easily implemented, of wide dynamic range, and highly precise, could be widely used in the measurement of filter cutoff depth.
