  • The main goal of this work is advances in 1.0mm $\times$ 0.5mm light emitting diode using AlInGaN cell structure and display module. In the first place, we proposed $200{\mu}m{\times}200{\mu}m$ cell structure using AlInGaN. Secondly, we describe new type 1.0mm $\times$ 0.5mm blue and white LED fabrication procedure and results of an examination include mobile application.

HIPIMS를 활용한 SiO2 반사방지막 코팅 제조 및 특성분석

  • 반사방지막 코팅(Anti-reflection coating)은 태양전지(Solar cell), 발광다이오드(LED) 등의 반사율을 낮추어 효율을 증대시키기 위하여 사용되고 있다. 본 실험에서는 유리 기판 위에 실리콘 타겟을 이용한 반응성 high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) 장비를 활용하여, 높은 공정 압력(High-pressure)에서 펄스폭(Pulse width)을 조절하여 $SiO_2$ 반사방지막 코팅층을 형성하였다. 또한, 기공이 더 많은 박막을 제작하기 위해 빗각증착(Oblique-angle deposition)을 적용하여 더 좋은 광학 특성을 갖는 반사방지막 코팅층을 형성하였다. UV-Vis spectrometer를 이용하여, 380~800 nm 파장에서 투과율(Transmittance)을 측정하여 비교, 분석하였다. Ellipsometer를 이용하여 $SiO_2$ 박막층의 굴절률(Refractive index)을 측정한 결과, 반사방지막 코팅층 내부 기공에 따라 다양한 굴절률을 가지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 코팅층 내부 기공의 형상을 확인하기 위해 SEM(Secondary electron microscopy)을 활용하여 코팅층 단면(Cross section)을 측정하였다. 이를 활용하여 낮은 굴절률을 갖는 반사방지용 $SiO_2$ 코팅층을 형성하여 태양전지의 광 변환 효율을 상승 시킬 수 있고, 발광다이오드의 광 추출 효율을 증가시킬 있을 것으로 여겨진다.

$SiO_2$ 박막을 활용한 반사방지막 코팅 제조 및 특성분석

  • 반사방지막 코팅(Anti-reflection coating)은 태양전지(Solar cell), 발광다이오드(LED) 등의 반사율을 낮추어 효율을 증대시키기 위하여 사용되고 있다. 본 실험에서는 유리 기판 위에 실리콘 타겟을 이용한 Reactive magnetron sputtering 장비를 활용하여, 50~100 mTorr의 높은 공정 압력(High pressure)에서 Ar:O2 유량비를 변화시키며 증착하여 SiO2 반사방지막 코팅층을 형성하였다. Ellipsometer를 이용하여 SiO2 박막층의 굴절률(Refractive index)을 측정한 결과, 공정 압력과 Ar:O2 유량비에 따라 SiO2 박막이 다양한 굴절률을 가지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, UV-Vis spectrometer를 이용하여, 190~1,100 nm 파장에서의 반사율(Reflectance)과 투과율(Transmittance)을 측정하여 비교, 분석하였다. 나아가 증착된 SiO2 반사방지막을 비정질 실리콘 박막 태양전지에 적용하여 효율 향상 효과를 실험하였다. 이를 활용하여 낮은 굴절률을 갖는 반사방지용 SiO2 코팅층을 형성하여 태양전지의 광 변환 효율을 상승 시킬 수 있고, 발광다이오드의 광 추출 효율을 증가시킬 있을 것으로 여겨진다.

지르코니아 표면에 부착된 바이오필름에 대한 LED 치솔의 항균효과 (Antimicrobial effect of toothbrush with light emitting diode on dental biofilm attached to zirconia surface: an in vitro study)

  • 목적: 이번 연구의 목적은 정적인 방법과 동적인 방법으로 형성된 지르코니아 표면에 부착된 바이오필름에 대한 LED 칫솔의 항균 효과를 평가하고자 하였다. 연구 재료 및 방법: 구강 바이오필름을 형성하기 위해 직경 12 mm, 두께 2.5 mm의 지르코니아 디스크를 24-well plate(정적 방법)와 Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) biofilm reactor (동적 방법)에 디스크를 넣어 바이오필름을 형성하였다. 디스크는 아무 처치도 하지 않은 대조군, 상용화된 광역학(PDT) 키트, 치솔질(brushing) 단독, LED 치솔군, LED 치솔과 에리스로신을 같이 적용한 군, 이렇게 5개 그룹으로 구성하였다. 각 군별 처치 후, 개별 디스크를 시험관에 넣고 60 초 동안 vortexing하여 세균을 분리한 후, 분리된 세균 용액을 선택 배지를 이용하여 살아있는 세균 수를 확인한 후 실험 방법에 따른 항균 효과를 계측하였고, 주사전자현미경(SEM)을 통하여 세균의 형태 변화를 관찰하였다. 결과: 바이오필름의 형성과 구성비는 동적인 방법과 정적인 방법에 따른 차이는 관찰되지 않았다. 대조군과 실험군간에 세균의 생존률에 유의한 차이가 있었다(P < 0.05). LED 치솔과 에리스로신을 같이 적용한 군에서 가장 높은 항균 효과가 관찰되었다(P < 0.05). 주사전자현미경 사진상에서 광역학치료군과, LED 치솔군, LED 치솔과 에리스로신을 같이 적용한 군은 세균의 형태 변화가 관찰되었으나, 대조군과 치솔질 단독 사용군에서는 세균의 형태 변화가 관찰되지 않았다. 결론: 이번 연구 결과 지르코니아 표면에 부착된 바이오필름을 효과적으로 제거하는 방법으로 LED 치솔과 에리스로신을 같이 적용하는 것이 추천된다.

Blocking Layers Deposited on TCO Substrate and Their Effects on Photovoltaic Properties in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

  • In this review, we have investigated the effect of $TiO_2$-based blocking layers (t-BLs), deposited on a transparent conductive oxide (TCO)-coated glass substrate, on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The t-BL was deposited using spin-coating or sputtering technique, and its thicknesses were varied to study the influence of the thin $TiO_2$ layer in between transparent conducting glass and nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ (nc-$TiO_2$). The DSSC with the t-BL showed the improved adhesion and the suppressed charge recombination at a TCO glass substrate than those without the t-BL, which led to the higher conversion efficiency.

The role of Purkinje cell-derived VEGF in cerebellar astrogliosis in Niemann-Pick type C mice

  • Niemann-Pick type C disease (NP-C) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by a deficiency of NPC1 gene function, which leads to severe neuroinflammation such as astrogliosis. While reports demonstrating neuroinflammation are prevalent in NP-C, information about the onset and progression of cerebellar astrogliosis in this disorder is lacking. Using gene targeting, we generated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) conditional null mutant mice. Deletion of VEGF in cerebellar Purkinje neurons (PNs) led to a significant increase of astrogliosis in the brain of NP-C mice in addition to the loss of PNs, suggesting PN-derived VEGF as an important factor in NP-C pathology. Moreover, replenishment of VEGF in neurons improved brain pathology in NP-C mice. Overall, our data provide a new pathological perspective on cerebellar astrogliosis in NP-C and suggest the importance of VEGF as a therapeutic target for this disease.

Metformin Synergistically Potentiates the Antitumor Effects of Imatinib in Colorectal Cancer Cells

  • Metformin is the most commonly prescribed anti-diabetic drug with relatively minor side effect. Substantial evidence has suggested that metformin is associated with decreased cancer risk and anticancer activity against diverse cancer cells. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib has shown powerful activity for treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia and also induces growth arrest and apoptosis in colorectal cancer cells. In this study, we tested the combination of imatinib and metformin against HCT15 colorectal cancer cells for effects on cell viability, cell cycle and autophagy. Our data show that metformin synergistically enhances the imatinib cytotoxicity in HCT15 cells as indicated by combination and drug reduction indices. We also demonstrate that the combination causes synergistic down-regulation of pERK, cell cycle arrest in S and $G_2/M$ phases via reduction of cyclin B1 level. Moreover, the combination resulted in autophagy induction as revealed by increased acidic vesicular organelles and cleaved form of LC3-II. Inhibition of autophagic process by chloroquine led to decreased cell viability, suggesting that induction of autophagy seems to play a cell protective role that may act against anticancer effects. In conclusion, our present data suggest that metformin in combination with imatinib might be a promising therapeutic option in colorectal cancer.

Classifier Combination Based Source Identification for Cell Phone Images

  • Rapid popularization of smart cell phone equipped with camera has led to a number of new legal and criminal problems related to multimedia such as digital image, which makes cell phone source identification an important branch of digital image forensics. This paper proposes a classifier combination based source identification strategy for cell phone images. To identify the outlier cell phone models of the training sets in multi-class classifier, a one-class classifier is orderly used in the framework. Feature vectors including color filter array (CFA) interpolation coefficients estimation and multi-feature fusion is employed to verify the effectiveness of the classifier combination strategy. Experimental results demonstrate that for different feature sets, our method presents high accuracy of source identification both for the cell phone in the training sets and the outliers.

  • The Mycobacterium bovis BCG panB gene, encoding ketopantoate hydroxymethyltransferase (KPHMT), was cloned from a ${\lambda}gt11$ genomic library and sequenced. The DNA sequence encodes a protein that contains 281 amino acid residues (M, 29,337) with a high similarity to the KPHMTs. Subcloning of a 846 by open reading frame (ORF), but not a 735 by ORF, into the vector pUC19 led to complementation of the panB mutant of Escherichia coli. The BCG pang gene was overexpressed in E. coli and the KPHMT purified to homogeneity The recombinant protein was further confirmed by an enzymatic assay.

Cell-based Immunotherapy for Colorectal Cancer with Cytokine-induced Killer Cells

  • Colorectal cancer is the third leading cancer worldwide. Although incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer are gradually decreasing in the US, patients with metastatic colorectal cancer have poor prognosis with an estimated 5-year survival rate of less than 10%. Over the past decade, advances in combination chemotherapy regimens for colorectal cancer have led to significant improvement in progression-free and overall survival. However, patients with metastatic disease gain little clinical benefit from conventional therapy, which is associated with grade 3~4 toxicity with negative effects on quality of life. In previous clinical studies, cell-based immunotherapy using dendritic cell vaccines and sentinel lymph node T cell therapy showed promising therapeutic results for metastatic colorectal cancer. In our preclinical and previous clinical studies, cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells treatment for colorectal cancer showed favorable responses without toxicities. Here, we review current treatment options for colorectal cancer and summarize available clinical studies utilizing cell-based immunotherapy. Based on these studies, we recommend the use CIK cell therapy as a promising therapeutic strategy for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
