The purpose of this paper is to review the state of laser processing technology using metal powders. In recent years, a series of research and development efforts have been undertaken worldwide to develop laser processing technologies to fabricate metal-based parts. Layered manufacturing by the laser melting process is gaining ground for use in manufacturing rapid prototypes (RP), tools (RT) and functional end products. Selective laser sintering / melting (SLS/SLM) is one of the most rapidly growing rapid prototyping techniques. This is mainly due to the processes's suitability for almost any materials, including polymers, metals, ceramics and many types of composites. The interaction between the laser beam and the powder material used in the laser melting process is one of the dominant phenomena defining feasibility and quality. In the case of SLS, the powder is not fully melted during laser scanning, therefore the SLS-processed parts are not fully dense and have relatively low strength. To overcome this disadvantage, SLM and laser cladding (LC) processes have been used to enable full melting of the powder. Further studies on the laser processing technology will be continued due to the many potential applications that the technology offers.
A highly sensitive magnetic sensor using the Giant MagnetoImpedance effect has been developed. The sensor performance is studied and estimated. The sensor circuitry consists of a square wave generator (driving source), a sensing element in a form of composite wire of a 25 $\mu$m copper core electrodeposited with a thin layer of soft magnetic material ($Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$), and two amplifier stages for improving the gain, switching mechanism, scaler circuit, an AC power source driving the permeability of the magnetic coating layer of the sensing element into a dynamic state, and a signal pickup LC circuit formed by a pickup coil and an capacitor. Experimental studies on sensor have been carried out to investigate the key parameters in relation to the sensor sensitivity and resolution. The results showed that for high sensitivity and resolution, the frequency and magnitude of the ac driving current through the sensing element each has an optimum value, the resonance frequency of the signal pickup LC circuit should be equal to or twice as the driving frequency on the sensing element, and the anisotropy of the magnetic coating layer of the sensing wire element should be longitudinal.

To date, rubbing has been widely used to align LC molecules uniformly. Although rubbing can be simple, it has fundamental problems such as the generation of defects by dust and static electricity, and difficulty in achieving a uniform LC alignment on a large substrate. Therefore, noncontact alignment has been investigated. Ion beam induced alignment method, which provides controllability, nonstop process, and high resolution display. We investigated the high pretilt angle effects on electro-optical properties of ion beam (IB)-irradiated liquid crystal cells. on a blended polymer surface. High pretilt angle of liquid crystals IB-irradiated on a blended polymer surface including such as 5% and 10% of homeotropic polymer contents can' be achieved. The threshold voltages of IB-irradiated twisted nematic (TN) cells on a blended polymer surface decrease with increasing the pretilt angle. Also, the rising time of IB-irradiated TN cells decreases with increasing the pretilt angle. However the decay time of IB-irradiated TN cells increases with increasing the pretilt angle. Consequently, the electro-optical properties of IB-irradiated TN cells depend strongly on the pretilt angle in a blended polymer surface.
Electrokinetic motion of fullerene ($C_{60}$) particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under an in-plane electric field has been studied for the application to the electronic paper display. Fullerenes move in the direction of applied electric field due to interaction between the induced dipole moment on $C_{60}$ and external electric field at lower threshold voltages compared to other devices such as QR-LPD (Quick Response Liquid Powder Display) and TBD (Twisting Ball Display). We also confirmed the bistability of fullerene particles in LC medium and the results showed that the 87% and 81% of original reflectance or transmittance of image was retained after 24 hours and 48 hours respectively. Our studies show the possibility that fullerenes can be used for electronic paper display.
In this study, the advanced DuoPIGatron-type ion beam (IB) system was applied to inorganic thin film for aligning liquid crystal (LC). LC alignment on $Ta_2O_5$ via IB irradiation was embodied. As a result of IB irradiation, the homogeneously aligned liquid crystal display (LCD) on $Ta_2O_5$ was observed with low pretilt angles. The $Ta_2O_5$ were deposited on indium-tin-oxide coated Coming 1737 glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering at $200^{\circ}C$. The deposition process resulted in forming very uniform thin film on glass substrates without any defects. To confirm the application of the inorganic alignment on modem display optical devices, we fabricated twisted nematic LCD and measured optical property and response time. As a result of the experiment, the electro optical characteristics of the LCD fabricated by using IB irradiation on $Ta_2O_5$ alignment layer were similar with the other LCD fabricated by using rubbing process.
The liquid crystal display (LCD) applications treated on the organic overcoat thin film surfaces by ion beam irradiation was successfully studied. The good LC aligning capabilities treated on the organic overcoat thin film surfaces with ion beam exposure of $60^{\circ}$ for 2 min above ion beam energy of 1200 eV can be achieved. But, the alignment of defect of NLC on the organic overcoat surface at low energy of 600 eV was measured. The pretilt angle of NLC on the organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure of $60^{\circ}$ for 2 min at energy of 1800 eV was measured about 1 degree. Finally, the good thermal stability of LC alignment on the organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure of $60^{\circ}$ for 2 min until annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ can be measured.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate of shear bond strength of light-curing composite resin to light-curing glass ionomer cement. Composite resin and glass ionomer cement have been widely used as an esthetic filling materials in dental clinics. To achieve better clinical results, sandwich technic was developed with conpensating for disadvantages of these two materials. Especially, light-curing glass ionomer cement provided greately improved bonding strength of teeth or composite resin, and then excellent clinical results can be acquired. In this study, 6 commercial light-curing glass ionomer cements(3 commercial restorative materials : Fuji II LC, Variglass VLC, Vitremer, and 3 commercial lining materials : Fuji Lining LC, Baseline VLC, Vitrebond) were devided two groups. According to manufacturer's appointment, no surface treatment was referred to N groups. Supposing. of clinical practice, surface grinding with water spray at 320 grit sand paper, 40 seconds etching with 37% phosphoric acid, 20 seconds washing, 20 seconds air drying was referred to N groups. Totally 12 experimental groups were devided, and all 120 specimens from 10 specimens of each groups were made. After light-curing composite resin was bonded to light-curing glass ionomer cement, shear bond strength was tested by Instron universal testing machine between glass ionomer cement and composit resin. The data were analyzed statistically by Student's t-test and ANOVA. The obtained results were as follows; 1. In light-curing glass ionomer cement, restorative materials showed higher shear bond strength to composite resin than lining materials(p<0.05). 2. Variglass VLC of restorative material group and Baseline VLC of lining material group have highest shear bond strength to composite resin(p<0.001). 3. In light-curing glass ionomer cement, surface grinding and acid etching reduced shear bond strength to composite resin(p<0.001)}. 4. VGN group 1s highest shear bond strength to composite resin, VBE group is lowest shear bond strength to composite resin(p<0.001).
The purpose of this study was to determine the fluroide release levels of new fluoride-containing liner/base cements and the fluoride uptake by dentin surfaces. Ten specimens of each brand (Fuji ionomer Type III, Fuji Lining LC, Timeline, Vitrebond and XR ionomer) were made, polymerized and placed in fluoride-free distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$, 100% relative humidity for 24 hours. The extracting solution of specimen was exchanged and fluoride release was measured daily for the 30 days. For fluoride uptake study, twenty-five extracted human lower molars were sectioned longitudinally in the mesiodistal direction with a diamond disc. Five teeth were filled with each material and then stored at $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity for 4 weeks. Fluoride uptake by dentin from the test materials was evaluated using electron probe micro X-ray analyzer. The following results were obtained : 1. The amounts of fluoride release showed no significant difference between Fuji ionomer Type III and Fuji Lining LC, but showed significant difference between other groups. XR ionomer released significantly greater fluoride than any other group(P<.001). 2. All the materials have a burst effect which more fluoride released in then first 3 day and showed significant decrease over the test period (P<0.001). 3. XR ionomer group showed fluoride penetration to approximately $50{\mu}m$ deep in dentin. But other material groups showed very little fluoride uptake by dentin.
The purpose of this study was to compare the adaptation to the tooth structure of five light cured glass ionomer cements (Fuji II LC. VariGlass VLC, Vitremer, Dyract and Geristore). Human, non-carious fifty extracted permanent premolars stored in normal saline were used. Class V cavity preparations were created on the buccal surfaces. The occlusal margin of each cavity was placed on the enamel and the gingival margin was placed on the cementum/dentin. The teeth were then distributed at random into five groups of 10 teeth each. Group 1: Fuji II LC, Group 2 : VariGlass VLC, Group 3 : Vitremer, Group 4: Dyract, Group 5 : Geristore. The prepared cavities were restored with one of the five light cured glass ionomer cements. The manipulation of each material was handled according to the manufacturer's instructions. All samples were placed in incubator of 100% relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The roots of the teeth were removed with the tapered fissure bur and the remaining crowns were sectioned buccolingually through the center of restorations. The cut interfaces were gradually hand polished on sandpapers from 300 up to 1200 grit. The adaptation at the tooth/cements interface was assessed by SEM (JSM-840A, JEOL Ltd.). The results of this study were as follows : 1. Group 2 revealed the best adaptation and groups 1, 4 and 5 revealed similar adaptation pattern to the cavity walls. Group 3 revealed the worst adaptation to the cavity walls. 2. Enamel margins showed better adaptation than dentin/cementum margins with each material except group 3. 3. The hybrid layers were observed between the glass ionomer cement and dentin in groups 2, 4 and 5.
