We have designed transflective liquid crystal display(LCD) associated with in-plane switching of a LC director driven by fringe-field, unlike other LCD mode. Reflective area consists of a λ/2 compensation film and a LC cell with retardation value(dΔn) of λ/4 with their optic axes making an angle of 15$^{\circ}$ and 75$^{\circ}$ against polarizer, respectively. In the transmissive area, top and bottom polarizers are parallel each other, an LC has a dΔn of λ/2, and another λ/2 compensation film is inserted between the LC cell and bottom polarizer. With the configuration, both devices show dark state initially. When an incident light is 550nm, the device shows wide-viewing-angle characteristics such that in the reflective area the contrast ratio target than 5 exists up to 55$^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions and in transmissive area it exists about 100$^{\circ}$ in vortical direction and 110$^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.
By using $45^{\circ}$ obliqued evaporation method with electron beam system, uniformly vertical liquid crystal (LC) alignment was achieved. And a high pretilt angles of about $2.5^{\circ}$ were measured. Also, it was verified that there are no variations of pretilt angle as a function of $SiO_x$ thin film thickness 20 nm and 50 nm. A good LC alignment states were observed at annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by $45^{\circ}$ obliqued electron beam evaporation method on the $SiO_x$ thin film can be achieved.
Effect of multi-stacked layer (MSL), 0.1 mol (M) and 0.3 mol (M) hafnium oxide ($HfO_2$) alignment layers were fabricated via a solution-process for LCs orientation. The solutions were spin-coated and annealed in a furnace. MSL consists of three sub-layers using 0.1 M solution, mono-layer (ML) is composed of 0.3 M $HfO_2$ solution. Then ion-beam irradiation was treated with 1.8 keV for 2 min. $HfO_2$-based LC cells were investigated through photographs, pre-tilt angle using crystal rotation method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement, and surface roughness using atomic force microscopy(AFM) for their characteristic research. Good LC orientation characteristics were observed on MSL $HfO_2$ surface. The LC alignment mechanism on MSL $HfO_2$ and ML $HfO_2$ surfaces was attributed to van der Waals (VDW) interaction between the LC molecular and substrate surface.
We studied on the electro-optic characteristics and dynamic stability according to an undesirably defined pretilt angle induced in high step coverage of pixel area for the Twisted Nematic (TN) / Fringe-Field Switching (FFS) mode. In case of the TN mode, LC directors twist reversely near the edges of thin-film-transistor and black matrix where the pretilt angle of the LC is not well defined. Therefore, the voltage-dependent dynamics of the LC in TN mode is unstable and shows the bad electro-optic characteristics. On the other hand, in case of the FFS mode, the LCs are twisted parallel to the bottom substrate by fringe electric field and the electro-optic characteristic is not influenced by the pretilt angle of the LC which is not well defined.
In this paper, the LC alignment characteristics of the NDLC thin film deposited by PECVD and sputtering were reported respectively. The NDLC thin film deposited using sputter showed uniform LC alignment at the 1200 eV of the ion beam intensity and pretilt angle was about $2^{\circ}$ while the NDLC thin film deposited using the PECVD showed uniform LC alignment and high pretilt angle at the 1800 eV of the ion beam intensity. Concerning the ion beam intensity, uniform LC alignment of the NDLC thin film deposited by the sputtering was achieved at the lower intensity. And the pretilt angle of the NDLC thin film deposited by sputter was higher than those of NDLC thin film that was deposited using the PECVD. The uppermost of the thermal stability of NDLC thin film was $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, NDLC thin film deposited by the PECVD showed stability at high temperature without defects, compared to NDLC thin film deposited by the sputter.
A single-gap and single-gamma transflective liquid-crystal (LC) display using patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode was designed. In the device, a vertical electric field drives a vertically aligned LC to tilt down to optimize polarization efficiency. Electrodes of transmissive and reflective area were patterned $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ with respect to the polarizer so that a tilt-down direction of the LC director was $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ in the reflective and transmissive regions, respectively. In the device, the cell gap was the same for both regions, and the gamma curve matched each other in both regions because tilt angle of LC director was the same according to the applied voltage. Moreover, the dark state was irrespective of the cell retardation value at normal direction, which was highly important in massive fabrications. The switching principle and electro-optic characteristics of the device are reported herein.

We have studied the motion of charged micro-particles that are immersed in a nematic liquid crystal (LC) and controlled by in-plane field. The LC is an anisotropic liquid such that the viscosity of the LC depends on flow direction, phase of the LC, and temperature, which affects the motion of the charged particles under the influence of electric field. This study shows that the motion of charged particles mainly depends on the applied voltage and the LC phase, but does not show any significant influence from the initial alignment of LC, although one may expect directional difference in drag force due to interaction between LC and particle. The viscosity changes due to temperature variations in nematic phase also show no signification influence on particle velocity when compared to the effect from varying in-plane field strength.
In this paper, we propose an in-plane switching (IPS) mode for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that, in principle, is free of retardation of the LC cell. Basically, the optical configuration of the LC cell consists of an A-plate and an LC layer for switching between the dark and bright states. We could achieve a fast response time compared with the conventional in-plane LC cell because the free retardation condition of the proposed LC cell enables us to reduce the cell gap even by quarter-wave retardation without any change of the optimized LC material in the transmissive mode. Experiments for verification of the proposed in-plane switching LC cells have shown a significant reduction of the rising time and falling time simultaneously due to the small cell gap. Furthermore, we also proposed an optical configuration for wide viewing property of the retardation free IPS LCD by applying the optical films. We proved the wide-view property of the retardation free IPS LCD by comparing its optical luminance with the calculated optical property of the conventional IPS LCD.

Color characteristics of a dark state in the IPS-mode depending on viewing direction have been studied. IPS-mode is having a little variation of $d{\Delta}n$ with viewing angle since the LC rotates in plane. However, this mode shows asymmetric light leakage and color characteristics with viewing angle in a dark state. This drawback can be overcome by optimized retardation value of TAC film, pre-tilt angle & $d{\Delta}n$ of LC.
Recently, it is widely studied to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using ion-beam exposure. Because conventional rubbing method has some problems such as defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. Moreover rubbing method needs cleaning process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free techniques like ion-beam method are strongly required. We studied LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic LC on the polyimide surface. In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as function of ion-beam irradiation angles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis provided chemical evidence for LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the presentation.
