Odd-Even Effects of the Anchoring Strength for Nematic Liquid Crystal on Rubbed Polyimide LB Surfaces (러빙처리된 폴리이미드막 LB막에 있어서 네마틱액정의 결합강도의 홀수짝수 효과)

  • The odd-even effect of the alkyl chain length of rubbed polyimide Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) surfaces on the extrapolation length of 5CB has been successfully evaluated for the first time by measuring polar anchoring strength. The extrapolation length of 5CB for rubbed PI-LB surfaces with even-numbers is small compared with odd-numbers for alkyl chain lengths of greater than 7 carbons. The extrapolation length of 5CB on rubbed PI-LB surfaces with odd-numbers increases gradually as the temperature increases but tends to diverge near the clearing temperature (Tc=$35.3^{\circ}C$). The extrapolation length diverges because of rapidly decreasing surface order near $T_c$. We suggest that the polar anchoring strength on rubbed PI-LB surfaces with even-number is strong because of relatively high surface ordering caused by more crystalline surfaces. Finally, we conclude that the odd-even effects of the polar anchoring strength in NLCs are strongly related to the character of the polymer and observed clearly for long alkyl chain lengths.

  • The role of ESR spectroscopy in the characterization of functional LB films is discussed. Optical absorption were performed on LB films of binary mixtures of three kinds of merocyanine dyes where DS and 6Me-DS form J-like aggregates but not DO in single component films. The observed optical absorption spectra of mixed films were markedly dependant on the combination of dyes. We found the formation of J-aggregates in a mixed merocyanine dyes containing a non J-aggregate forming dye DO, in a single component case. In structural studios, ESR is of particular important in the analysis of molecular orientation of LB films. Development of new functional LB films may provide more cases where ESR spectroscopy will clarify the nature of such films.

  • Stability improvement of fragile LB films was attempted by polyion complexation of monolayers at the air-water interface and crosslinking of the resulting LB films. The spreading polymers were synthesized by radical copolymerization of monoalkyl itaconate with oligoethyleneglycol methyl vinylether, and poly(allylamine) was employed as the subphase polymer. Formation and characteristic of the monolayers were comfirmed by surface pressure-area($\pi$-A) isotherms. The two different polymers formed polyion-complexed monolayer through the formation of carboxylate/ammonium salt at the air-water interface. Y-type deposition occurred on solid substrates, and the transfer ratio was over 0.7. Pores (diameter, 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$) of a membrane filter could be covered by polyion-complexed 6 layers. Interactions of the polymers with metal ions were investigated of the air-water interface and in the LB films. The structure change and macroscope morphology of the LB films were confirmed by FT-lR and SEM, respective1y.

  • We had experiment using LB method that can fabricate molecular order ultra-thin film below 100${\AA}$. LB method has known as main technology of information society in 21C, because it is not only free orientation and alignment of molecular but also ability of thickness control as molecular order. In this paper, the fabricated condition and physical properties of functional ultra-thin film of molecular order was investigated and highly efficient ultra-thin film capacitor was fabricated by using ultra-thin LB film for application as electronic device. Possibility of ultra-thin film capacitor was researched by analyzing and measuring electrical properties. Polyimide ultra-thin LB film capacitor was fabricated, ensured theoretically and experimentally its possibility in range of 10Hz∼lMHz through its frequency characteristics.

  • Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films of arachic acid and TCNQ(tetracyanoquinodimethane) were prepared in the sample of Al/LB film/Al type where Al are electrodes, and polarization in LB film and dipolar moment of molecules in the films were measured by themally stimulated current(TSC). It is ascertaind in our experiments that dipolar mament of $C_{12}$TCNQ molecule was about 13-15 debye and the moment was directed from the alkyle chain toward TCNQ. Generation of the open circuit voltage was investigated on the z-type and Hetero structure of LB films.

  • The electrical characteristics of stearic acid LB films far the horizontal direction were investigated to develop the gab sensor using LB films. $\pi$ -A isotherm was measured to transfer stearic acid on slide glass substrate and surface pressure for optimal deposition was 25[dyne/cm]. The deposition status of stearic acid LB films was verified by the measurement of capacitance which was increased with the number of layers. The thickness of electrode was estimated about 1000 by the I-V characteristics far the horizontal direction. The Conductivity of stearic acid LB films for horizontal direction was 10$^{-8}$ [S/cm] that mean like semiconductor.

  • Langmur-Blodgett (LB) method has a unique characteristic of making molecularly mutilayered aggregation structures. LB method makes the thickness of organic insulation layer controllable at molecular scale in various electronic devices. In this study, the organic materials applicable to crosslinked LB insulation layers of electronic devices have developed and the electrical properties of their LB films have examined such as Brewster angle microscopy(BAM), Scanning Maxwell-stress microscopy(SMM), and Current-voltage(1-V) properties.

  • We have made disperse diazo black D(DB-D) ultrathin films using Langmur-Blodgett(LB) and vacuum-evaporation technique. Physical and electrical properties of the films were investigated. Solution was made with a concentration of 10$^{-3}$ mol/$\ell$ using chloroform. Moving wall apparatus (NL-LB140 S-MWC) was employed to make the LB films. X,Y and Z-type LB films were manufactured and studied by UV/visible absorbance spectra and morphology of surface using atomic force microscopy. Vacuum-evaporated DB-D think films were made at a pressure of 10$^{-5}$ torrr. The absorption peaks appear at 200 and 40nm in the LB films and vacuum-deposited films. And we have studied photoluminescence spectrum of the DB-D films. Also TGA and DSC properties of the DB-D have been observed and current -voltage characteristics of the DB-D LB films have been measured along the perpendicular direction.

  • Polyimides containing cyclobutane ring in main chain is known to be thermally stable and able to be developed in organic solvents after photolysis with 254 nm UV light. This type of polyimides can be used as promising positive photoresist in VLSI fabrication process. In the current VLSI process, photoresist films are formed by spin coating. The film thickness is more than several hundred nano meters. It seems that there is room for improvement of film coating process by introducing Langmuir Blodgett technique. Thereby ultra thin film photoresist can be formed, and higher density of integration in VLSI be achieved. In the present work, depositing procedure of LB films of this polyimide was investigated. LB film thickness was measured by ellipsometry to evaluate deposited film status. Chemical imidization procedure was studied to avoid several problems in thermal imidization. The pattern of submicron dimension has successfully formed on LB film of 8nm thick, which found showing good contrast.

  • We have investgated on the monolayer LB film of BASH-DMPC mixture on an ITO for the photoisomerization by light irradiation. We measured electrochemical properties by using cyclic voltammetry with a three-electrode system, An Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire counter electrode and LB film-coated ITO working electrode in $NaClO_4$ solution at a variable concentration and monolayer LB films. A measuring range was reduced from initial potential to -1350mV, continuously oxidized to 1650 mV and measured to the initial point. The scan rate were 50, 100, 150 and 200 mV/s. As a results, LB films of 8A5H-DMPC appeared reversible process caused by the reduction-oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram.
