Dielectric and Optical Study of Polymer Nematic Liquid Crystal Composite

  • The dielectric anisotropy and dispersion of the real and imaginary part of the permittivity of commercially important nematic mixture E-24 and its polymer composite were investigated in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 10 MHz, and temperature range $14^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$. The percentage optical transmittance and density have also been measured for both the systems. The results have been explained by assuming molecular rotation about the long molecular axis, under a hindering nematic potential. The dielectric anisotropy ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ is positive, and the mean dielectric permittivity falls with rising temperature. ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ is also used to determine the order parameter with varying temperature.

  • The activity of SD-framesylcysteine O-methyltransferase was assayed by incubating the enzyrne with a synthetic in vitro substrate, [N-acetyl-S-trans, trns-famesyl-L-cysteine (AFC)], together with S-adenosyl-L-[emthyl-$_{14}$C)ester(AFCME)], was then analyzed either directly on HPLC or by converting the AFC[$methyl^{14}C$]ME to [$methyl^{14}C$] aclcohol by basehydrolysis. Employing these two analytical methods, it was established that a peptide purifed from rat liver cytosol fraction [Int. J. Biochem., 25, 1157 919930] strongly inhibited the above enzyme activity with $IC_{50}\; of\; 7.1\times 10^{-8}$ M. Also, the S-famesylcysteine O-methyltransferase from several human colon cancer cells was equally inhibited by the peptide.

  • Various ligands function as regulators in the allosteric control of tryptophan synthase. Effects of the monovalent cations and glycerophosphate on the mutant tryptophan synthases were examined in the presence of L-serine. The results showed that these compounds might play roles in the allosteric control of the proteins.

Comparative Study on Ethanol Production with Pentose and/or Hexose by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and/or Pichia stipitis (Saccharomyces cerevisiae와 Pichia stipitis를 이용한 오탄당과 육탄당으로부터 에탄올 생산에 관한 비교연구)

  • Glucose and xylose are the most abundant materials in nature which can be used to produce ethanol by yeast fermentation. Three combinations of cultivation with glucose and xylose were carried out; separated, co-culture, and sequential fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia stipitis. In the separated fermentation, S. cerevisiae fermented glucose to produce 14.5 g/l ethanol from 29.4 g/l glucose but hardly used xylose. However, P. stipitis utilized not only glucose but also xylose to produce ethanol 11.9 g/l and 11.6 g/l from 29.4 g/l glucose and 29.0 g/l xylose, respectively. In the mixture of glucose and xylose, P. stipitis fermented both sugars, producing 21.1 g/l ethanol while S. cerevisiae fermented only glucose, producing 13.4 g/l ethanol. In the co-culture and sequential fermentation, the co-culture showed more efficient ethanol productivity with 18.6 g/l ethanol than the sequential fermentation with 12.4 g/l ethanol. To investigate the effect of nutrients in the growth of microorganisms and ethanol production, yeast nitrogen base (YNB) was used in the sequential fermentation with S. cerevisiae and P. stipitis. YNB supplemented some nutrients which S. cerevisiae used up in the broth and the culture showed increased growth rate, increased consumption of xylose, and increased ethanol productivity producing 22.5 g/l ethanol from 54.6 g/l sugar with a yield of 0.41 g/g.

The Comparison of Results Among Hepatitis B Test Reagents Using National Standard Substance (국가 표준물질을 이용한 B형 간염 검사 시약 간의 결과 비교)

  • Purpose: Hepatitis B is infection caused by Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Currently, there are several methods, Kits and equipments for conducting Hepatitis B test. Due to ununiformed methods, it would cause some differences. To manage these differences, it needs process evaluating function of test system and reagent using particular standard substance. The aim of this study is to investigate tendency of RIA method's reagent used in Asan Medical Center through comparing several other test reagents using national standard substance. Materials and Methods: The standard substance in National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation's biology medicine consists of 5 things, 4 antigens and 1 antibody. We tested reagents using A, B company's Kits according to each test method. All tests are measured repeatedly to obtain accurate results. Results: Test result of "HBs Ag Mixed titer Performance panel" is obtained match rate compared S/CO unit standard with RIA method and EIA 3 reagents, CIA 2 reagents is that company A's reagent is 94.4% (17/18), 83.3% (15/18), B is 88.9% (16/18), 77.8% (14/18). Test result of "HBs Ag Low titer Performance panel" is obtain that EIA 2 reagents is shown 7 posive results, CIA 3 reagents is 11, and RIA method's company A's reagent is 3, B is 2 of 13 in low panel. "HBV surface antigen 86.76 IU/vial" tested dilution. A is obtain positive results to 600 times(0.14 IU/mL), B is 300 times (0.29 IU/mL). Case of "HBV human immunoglobulin 95.45 IU/vial", A is shown positive result to 10,000 times (9.5 mIU/mL) and B is 4,000 times (24 mIU/mL). Test result of "HBs Ag Working Standards 0.02~11.52 IU/mL" is shown that Company A's kit concentration level was 0.38IU/mL, company B was 2.23 IU/mL and higher level of concentration was positive results. Conclusion: When comparing various test reagents and RIA method according to National Standard substances for Hepatitis B test, we recognized that there were no significant trends between reagents. For hepatitis B virus antigen-antibody titers even in parts of the test up to 600 times the antigen, antibodies to 10,000 times the maximum positive results could be obtained. Therefore, we confirmed that results from Asan Medical Center are performed smoothly by reagents and system for hepatitis B virus test.

  • The nuclear LS-energy matrix elements have been calculated with the harmonic oscillator shell model wave functions for the configurations ( $l_{i}$ $l_{i+1}$$l_{i}$ $l_{i+1}$) where 1$_1$= $l_{s}$ , $l_2$=lp, $l_3$=ld, 2s, $l_4$=1f, 2p, $l_{5}$ =1g, 2d, 3s. The resulting matrix elements are expressed in terms of both Talmi integrals $I_1$ and Slater integrals $F^{k}$ . In addition to this various sum rules are derived and applied to check the results of the calculations.ons.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope new dental color-space system. Twelve kinds of dental composites and one kind of dental porcelain were used in this study. Disk samples (15 mm in diameter, 4 mm in thickness) of used materials were made and sample's CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ value was measured by Spectrocolorimeter (MiniScan XE plus, Model 4000S, diffuse/$8^{\circ}$ viewing mode, 14.3 mm Port diameters, Hunter Lab USA) The range of measured color distribution was analyzed. All the data were applied in the form of T### which is expression unit in CNU Cons Dental Color Chart. The value of $L^*$ lies between 80.40 and 52.70. The value of $a^*$ are between 10.60 and 3.60 and $b^*$ are between 28.40 and 2.21. The average value of $L^*$ is 67.40, and median value is 67.30. The value of $a^*$ are 2.89 and 2.91 respectively. And for the $b^*$, 14.30 and 13.90 were obtained. The data were converted to T### that is the unit count system in CNU-Cons Dental Color Chart. The value of $L^*$ is converted in the first digit of the numbering system. Each unit is 2.0 measured values. The second digit is the value of $a^*$ and is converted new number by 1.0 measured value. For the third digit $b^*$ is replaced and it is 2.0 measured unit apart. T555 was set to the value of $L^*$ ranging from 66.0 to 68.0, value of $a^*$ ranging from 3 to 4 and $b^*$ value ranging from 14 to 16.

Thickening of Activated Sludge Using Low Pressure Flotation Pilot System (파일롯 규모의 저압형 부상장치를 이용한 하수슬러지 농축에 관한 연구)

  • Low pressure air flotation (LAF) pilot plant for sludge thickening was installed in Chung Nam N.S. municipal waste water treatment plant to verify its application possibility. Effects of operating conditions such as coagulant dosages and microbubble water ratio on thickening of the mixed sludge were examined. Microbubbles which were generated in the chamber of $1.5kgf/cm^2$ by high speed collision method with foaming agent were used to float sludge. Solid loading of $30kg/m^2/hr$, solid contents in thickened sludge of 60,300 mg/L and SS removal efficiency of 99% were obtained through long period operating LAF in conditions of mixed sludge concentration of 14,400 mg/L, coagulant dosage of 27.6 mg/L, foaming agent addition of 4.0 mg/L and microbubble water injection ratio of 9.7%.

Determination of Pollutant EMCs and Loadings of Runoff in Paved Areas (포장지역내 강우유출수의 EMCs 및 부하량 산정)

  • The paved area like a road or bridge where having high impermeable rates were accumulated various non-point sources(NPS) by passing vehicles during dry season periods. They are flowed in the river continuous when it rains and could negative impact on environment. Therefore, this study monitoring NPS for two years and determinating for each pollutant EMCs and mass loading. The result shows that the EMC ranges are 11.60$\sim$230.90 mg/L for TSS, 4.58$\sim$31.90 mg/L for BOD, 1.86$\sim$9.20 mg/L for TN and 0.14$\sim$1.55 mg/L for TP. Also, the ranges of washed-off mass loading are determined to 0.78$\sim$18.01 kg/day for TSS, 0.47$\sim$1.17 kg/day for BOD, 0.00$\sim$0.01 kg/day for Pb and 0.01$\sim$0.06 kg/day for Zn.

A Ultra-wide Band Half-wavelength Loop Antenna using Self-complementary Principle for UAV Applications (자기상보 원리를 이용한 UAV 탑재용 초광대역 반파장 루프 안테나)

  • In this paper, we present a low-profile ultra-wide band half-wavelength loop antenna for UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) applications. The proposed antenna has an ultra-wide band using self-complementary principle. Also, the ground was located between radiators for reducing height of the antenna using image theory. Dimensions of proposed antenna have $0.20{\lambda}_L{\times}0.14{\lambda}_L{\times}0.16{\lambda}_L$ (${\lambda}_L$ is the free-space wavelength at lowest frequency). Measured -10 dB bandwidth was ultra-wide band as more than 50 : 1(over 0.3 GHz ~15 GHz). The radiation patterns of the antenna was omnidirectional like monopole antennas. Moreover, we tried the antenna mounted on under a fuselage of a scaled UAV. As a result, the proposed antenna on the UAV maintained ultra-wide band and omnidirectional radiation patterns at all frequencies.
