Objectives : In order to develop effective and safe anti-oxidation, the effects of Menthae Herba (M. spicata L. and M piperita L.) were examined. Methods : M. spicata L. and M. piperita L. of Menthae Herba were used to make water extracts and methanol extracts, and then its anti-oxidative effects were compared in vitro. Results : 1. M. spicata L. was stronger than M. piperita L. in anti-oxidative effects of methanol extracts, and water extracts showed similar anti-oxidation effects. 2. Water extracts of M. spicata L. was stronger than M. piperita L. showed a stronger superoxide anit-oxidation than the same-density ascorbic acid, so that water extracts were proved to be stronger than methanol extracts. 3. Methanol extracts' DPPH anti-oxidation was similar in M. spicata L. and M piperita L.. As for water extracts, M. spicata L. showed higher anti-oxidation and M. piperita L. had no anti-oxidation. 4. As for anti-oxidation of LDL and linoleic acid of methanol extracts, both M. spicata L. and M. piperita L. were stronger than a-tocopherol. As for the water extracts, these two showed similar level of anti-oxidative effect on linoleic acid, which is weaker that mehtanol extracts. 5. M. spicata L. includes more phenol than M. piperita L. Conclusions : Menthae Herba (M. piperita L. M. spicata L.) had anti-oxidation effect, so that it can be medically developed for anti-oxidation.
This text was analyzed and investigated the vegetation and floristic composition by cluster analysis and classification of phytosociological method, to evaluate the species composition, habitat environment and community structure of Liriope platyphylla and Liriope spicata group in Korea. The southeast slope gradient of the habitat of L. platyphylla and L. spicata was 6.7 to 8.4%, and the habitat altitude of L. platyphylla (41.0 m), L. spicata (114.9 m) was different. Habitat distribution of L. spicata was broader than L. platyphylla. Appearing plants of L. platyphylla and L. spicata group was 58 taxa, 99 taxa, respectively, and Coverage of tree layer was 87.5%, 92.5% respectively. In genus Liriope group, the highest appearing frequency of plant grow in the moist valley as Quercus serrata. Thus, plants of genus Liriope growth was better in moist shade. The vegetation of L. platyphylla group was classified into Quercus serrata community, Castanopsis sieboldii community, Pinus densiflora community and Pinus thunbergii community, and the Liriope spicata group was classified into Quercus serrata community, Quercus alien community, Quercus acutissima community, Prunus verecunda community, Robinia pseudoacacia community, Pinus densiflora community and Pinus thunbergii community. In genus Liriope group, Quercus serrata and Pinus densiflora communities was the closest the similarities.
Further studies have been done on the constituents of the tubers of Liriope spicata $L_{OUR}$ (Liliaceae). Four steroidal glycosides, tentatively designated as compounds I. II, III and IV, were isolated from the n-BuOH soluble fraction of this plant. The structures of these glycosides were established as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ glucoside, prosapogenin II of spicatoside A, ophiopogonin B, and prosapogenin III of spicatoside A.
‘Maig Moon Dong(麥問冬)’ is one of the chinese crude drugs used mainly to cure a cough and sputum, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of ‘Maig Moon Dong’, it has been considered to be Liriope species of Liliaceae, but there has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of Maig Moon Dong, we studied on the anatomical characteristics of Liriope and Ophiopogon species growing wild in Korea i.e. L. platyphylla, L. spicata, O. jaburan, O. japonicus and Maig Moon Dong from Korea. As a result, the botanical origin of Maig Moon Dong from Korea was proved as Liriope platyphylla and L. spicata.
Two novel steroidal saponins designated as spicatosides A(1) and B(2) were isolated from the tubers of Liriope spicata and their structures were elucidated as 25(S)-rus-cogenin -1-0- fJ - D-glucopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$2)- [$\beta$ - D-xylopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$3)] -$\beta$- D- fucopyranoside (1) and 26-0-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyI25(S)-22-0-methyl-furost-5-en-l$\beta$, 3$\beta$, 26-trioll-0-fJ -D¬glucopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$2)- [$\beta$- D-xylopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$3)] - $\beta$- D- fucopyranoside (2), respectively.

This study was conducted to develop a mass production for a commercial use by cutting of 4 kinds of V. glabrifolia Kitag., V. pusanensis Y.N.Lee, V. glabrifolia Kitag. × V. Spicata 'Alba' and V. spicata 'Ulster Blue Dwarf' × V. longifolia. Veronica L. Effects of shade, media and concentrations of plant growth regulators on the rooting of Veronica L. were examined. The rooting rate of V. glabrifolia Kitag. was higher as a 60% than the V. pusanensis Y.N.Lee as a 20% in the control of commercial media. In shading treatment, the rooting rate was highest at 30% or 60% shading, and the 30% shading was the best in number of root and root length, but the 90% shading was lower than no shading treatment. For cutting media, the rock wool and 100% perlite increased the rooting rate by more than 10% compared to commercial media, and increased the number of roots by 2 or 3 times. However the Cocopeat of media was lower of rooting rate, root number, and root length compared to another treatment. In the plant growth regulator treatment, the rate of rooting increased in all treatment compared to control, and was highest at IBA 1,000mg·L-1 as a 82.2% and NAA 200 or 400mg·L-1 as a 82.2% or 84.4% respectively, in the V. glabrifolia Kitag. × V. Spicata 'Alba'. However, the root number and root length was decreased as the concentration of growth regulators increased.
IPP isomerase (Iso) and Limonene synthase (Limo) are important enzymes in terpenoids biosynthesis pathway. The wild type and each metabolically engineered (Iso and Limo) transgenic spearmint (Mentha spicata Linne) plants were compared for their growth patterns and the contents of essential oil in in vitro culture media. The profile of terpenoid metabolites was obtained from the essential oil of the metabolically engineered transgenic spearmint, which was extracted using a modified SDE method, by GC-MS analysis. The growth of wild spearmint was more profuse in B5 culture medium than in other media. Significant differences in leaf and root growth patterns were observed between metabolically engineered transgenic and wild type spearmint plants. The leaves of the transgenic spearmint plants were slightly elongated but were dramatically narrower than those of wild type spearmints. The content of essential oil of transgenic spearmint was different slightly depending on the target terpenoid genes. The content of essential oils in Limo transgenic plants was higher than that of Iso, except for transgenic plant in B5 medium. The transgenic spearmint produced more terpenoids than the wild type. Iso spearmint extracts showed eleven terpenoids and a phenylpropane, while Limo spearmint extracts contained nine terpenoids. However, extracts from the wild type showed the presence of only four terpenoids.

Compositions of essential oils extracted from mint herb such as Mentha piperita, Mentha spicata, and Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate produced in Jeju were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and headspace-GC-MS (HS-GC-MS). By the GC-MS analysis, 13 compounds were tentatively identified in Mentha piperita, Mentha spicata, and Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate, respectively. Peperitenone oxide, carvone, and linalool were detected as major compounds in Mentha piperita, in Mentha spicata, in Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate, respectively, based on the ratio of peak intensity in the total ion chromatogram. The greater number of compounds, including volatile alcohols and acetates were identified by HS-GC-MsS than by GC-MS in these all three essential oils. Similar patterns of composition were detected in both Mentha spicata and Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate by either one of GC-MS methods. However, in case of Mentha piperita, $\small{L}$-(-)-menthol, which was identified as the major compound by HS-GC-MS was detected in dramatically reduced quantity by GC-MS. Interestingly, we found that both linalyl acetate and linalool were identified as the dominant compounds in the essential oil of Mentha ${\times}$ piperita var. citrate.
This study investigated the effects of NaCl and jasmonic acid (JA) on the growth and physiological responses of spearmint (Mentha spicata L.). Spearmint was hydroponically grown for 3 weeks in modified Hoagland solution containing 0 (untreated control), JA ($20{\mu}M$ JA pretreatment), NaCl (50 mM NaCl treatment) and JA + NaCl ($20{\mu}M$ JA pretreatment + 50 mM NaCl treatment). Growth characteristics, chlorophyll, vitamin C, proline contents, DPPH scavenging activity and inorganic ion contents were evaluated. As a results, there were significant decreases in the plant height, leaf length, leaf width, and fresh weight of plants, treated with NaCl compared with control. On the other hand, the dry matters of shoot and root treated with JA + NaCl combination were better than control or NaCl treatment. Chlorophyll a and b contents in JA treatment was the highest. Vitamin C, antioxidant activity, and proline content in shoot were increased in NaCl treatment which showed low level of growth rate. The K/Na ratio, which is known to indirectly reflect the balance of ion uptake, was higher in a single treatment of JA than the control group, while lower in salt treatment (NaCl and JA + NaCl) because of high $Na^+$ absorption. In conclusion, these results showed that moderate stress treatment such as low level salt treatment and plant growth regulator jasmonic acid (JA) application would be potential strategies to improve the quality of spearmint by inducing the accumulation of secondary metabolites containing high antioxidant activity and essential oil.
